What This Episode Is
First Ground is the arrival. The six of The Company are thrown out of the old world through The Threshold by a hand that has no face and no name, and they land on the broken line of The Shattered Coast in a universe that does not know they are there. This is the episode that turns a group of exiles into the first party of The Forgotten.
It is told in five acts over 40 pages. Each page is a beat, and each beat carries one to three mood images — the pictures are planned here, on the beat sheet, before a single one is drawn.
Cast
- Uaellaen — the narrator, the archmage, the one who holds the shape of the story.
- Uuaellaen — his real blood brother, the cleric who holds the line.
- Rumzuck Umbatsch — the ogre warrior, the shield, the brother.
- Smackage — the ogre warrior, the closest friend, the ground-reader.
- Wreckreate — the erudite wizard, the water-reader, the warning.
- Zahlia — the great enchantress, the Veil-feeler.
Act I — The Crossing (pages 1–8)
1. Cold Open — the Threshold (pages 1–2) White-out. The six, mid-fall, in the thin place where the Veil is thin enough to step through. No ground, no sky, only the light and the falling. Mood: the Threshold in white light; the six small against it.
2. The Unnamed Hand (page 3) Something pushes them. It has no face, no name, no voice — only a will, and the will is not kind. Uaellaen will not say who it was, and the story will not say either. Mood: a hand of dark light, featureless, around the six.
3. Uaellaen's Last Sight of the Old World (page 4) For one page the old world is behind them — the ice of The Nameless Tundra, receding, and gone. Mood: the Nameless Tundra, seen from above, going small.
4. Uuaellaen Holds the Line (page 5) The blood-brother's ward: Uuaellaen keeps the six together in the fall, the cleric holding what the world is trying to scatter. Mood: Uuaellaen's light binding the six as they fall.
5. The Crossing (pages 6–7) The Veil tears. Not a door — a wound. They go through it the way the world is broken. Mood: the Veil tearing, the old world on one side, nothing on the other.
6. Impact — the Shattered Coast (page 8) Black rock, black sand, kept air. The six strike the broken shore, and the shore is the first page of the new world. Mood: the Shattered Coast at first light, the six on the black sand.
Act II — First Ground (pages 9–18)
7. What Broke It (page 9) They look at the broken line of the coast and they know what did this. The scar in the rock is a prismatic one. Mood: the scar in the black rock, a seam of cold light.
8. The Forbidden (page 10) They know what prismatic means. Prismatic Dragons — the power of several gods, and the size to match. They are forbidden here, and the scar is the proof. Mood: the coast under a heavy sky, something vast suggested off in the water.
9. The First Fire (page 11) A campfire on the wrong world. The six sit around it, and the fire is the first thing that is theirs. Mood: the campfire, six silhouetted against storm-lit cliffs.
10. The Air Is Wrong (page 12) Uaellaen tests the air. Magic works — The Elemental Planes answer, the way they should — but the rules are different, and the difference is the camp's oldest argument. Mood: Uaellaen's hand, the air bending in a way it should not.
11. The Gods Are Here and Not Answering (page 13) The sanctums are standing where the sanctums should be. The hall of seals holds its seals. And none of them answers. The not-answering is the world's own face. Mood: a sanctum, standing, empty, no light in it.
12. Two Readers (page 14) Wreckreate reads the water; Smackage reads the ground. The world has a body, and the two of them are the ones who can feel where the bones are. Mood: Wreckreate at the waterline, Smackage with one knee in the black sand.
13. Rumzuck's First Words (page 15) The ogre speaks, in the new world, and the first thing he says is not about the enemy. Mood: Rumzuck at the fire, the first real face on his features.
14. Zahlia Feels the Veil (page 16) The Veil is here — and it is not what it was. Thicker, or thinner, and the enchantress is not sure which, and the not-knowing is the first question of the camp. Mood: Zahlia's hands raised, the air around them going thin.
15. The Night Watch (page 17) The first night on the broken coast. The watch is kept the way the old world taught it, but for things the old world never had. Mood: the camp at night, one figure at the edge of the firelight.
16. Morning — the World Is Not Owed (page 18) The first real morning. The world did not come with the story; it was already here, running on its own, and it is not owed the six a welcome. Mood: the coast at full morning, the camp small on the black sand.
Act III — The Split (pages 19–27)
17. Not All of Them, to the Same Shore (page 19) The count is wrong. Six went through; not six are here. Mood: the black sand, the firelight, and a space where a sixth should be.
18. The Not-Knowing Where (page 20) One or two landed elsewhere. The where is not known, and the not-knowing is the first wound the camp will carry. Mood: the mist over the water, a single shape far out, not quite there.
19. The Argument (page 21) Go looking, or stay. The camp's first real fight, and it is not about the enemy — it is about who they are willing to lose. Mood: the six at the fire, turned against each other, the light between them.
20. Uaellaen's Decision (page 22) Stay, and find them. Both at once, because the two are the same thing: a camp that does not look for its lost is not a camp. Mood: Uaellaen, alone at the water's edge, looking out.
21. The Signal (page 23) The way they will know the lost when they are found — a sign that is theirs, that the world cannot fake. Mood: a mark made in the black rock, the shape of it not yet shown.
22. The Camp Becomes a Place (page 24) First walls, first hearth, first ground that is theirs. The camp is no longer something they are in; it is something they are. Mood: the camp at dawn, the walls going up, the six at work.
23. The Name They Refuse (page 25) The world wants a name for them. They do not give it one. A name is a claim, and they are not claiming this world yet. Mood: the camp from a distance, no banner, no name, just the fire.
24. The Name They Give Themselves (page 26) The Forgotten. Not because they are lost — because they are the people no one will give up on finding. Mood: the camp, a banner at last, the word on it not quite legible.
25. The First Law (page 27) No one is beyond being found again. The guild's whole law, spoken the first morning, and held for the rest of the story. Mood: the six around the fire, one seat empty, kept.
Act IV — The Sleeping Water (pages 28–34)
26. They Find Hollowmere (page 28) A drowned place under a dark, still lake. Flat silver light, no wind, and the water so still it is not water at all. Mood: Hollowmere, the still lake, the flat silver light.
27. Something Sleeps Beneath It (page 29) Wreckreate reads the water and stops. There is something under it, and it is asleep, and it is very large, and it has been asleep a very long time. Mood: the lake, and under the surface, the faintest suggestion of a shape.
28. The Warning (page 30) Some doors are closed for a reason. Wreckreate says it plainly, and the camp hears it, and the camp remembers it. Mood: Wreckreate's face, the water behind him, the shape gone.
29. The Keeping (page 31) The camp keeps its ground in the tundra and its distance from the water, and the keeping is the camp's whole of the year. Mood: the camp from the water's edge, the distance between it and the lake.
30. The World's First Answer (page 32) The world says its first thing to the six — in ground and weather and the look of the light: this is not the old world. Mood: the coast, the lake, the sky, the three of it in one frame.
31. Uaellaen's First Lie (page 33) To keep the camp whole, he tells them one thing that is not quite true, and the lie is the first thing he will have to carry. Mood: Uaellaen speaking, the six listening, one of them not quite believing.
32. The Night the Light Did Not Come Back (page 34) One of the watch does not come back to the fire. The camp learns, in one night, what a world that is not answered is a world that is not owed. Mood: the fire, the dark, a lantern not coming back.
Act V — First Fire (pages 35–40)
33. The Choice (page 35) A camp, or a guild. The question is not about walls — it is about whether they are the people who stay, or the people who keep finding. Mood: the camp at dusk, the six looking at each other.
34. The Founding of The Forgotten (pages 36–37) The camp becomes a guild. The first fire of The Forgotten is lit, and the guild's law is the first law: no one is beyond being found again. Mood: the founding, the first fire of the guild, the six around it.
35. Who's Seventh? (page 38) By the fire there are six seats, and one of them is kept for the one who is not here. The seat is kept for The Seventh — a question the story keeps open. Mood: the six seats around the fire, the seventh one empty, the light on it.
36. The Map Begins (page 39) The mappers of the guild put the first marks on the first map — the coast, the lake, the tundra. The gazetteer begins with the three places the camp has stood in. Mood: the map, the three marks, the rest of it blank.
37. The Threshold Behind Them (page 40, first half) Can it be reopened? Uaellaen does not know, and the not-knowing is the longest silence the story has. Mood: the Threshold, far away, the thin place in the world.
38. Close — Uaellaen (page 40, second half) The episode ends the way it began: on the broken coast, in the wrong world, with the six of them and the one empty seat, and the patience of a man who has had practice.
"I have been in this universe for a while now. I still do not know its name. I do not think that is an accident. I think this universe is waiting for me to ask the right question. I have not found it yet. I am patient. I have had practice." Mood: the camp, the coast, the dark, and the one empty seat.
Mood Image Plan
Each beat above carries its mood. The image track for this episode is 40 pages × 1–3 pictures, drawn from the moods named at each beat — the coast and the camp in the first acts, the water and the warning in Act IV, and the fire and the empty seat through the close. The pictures are drawn against this beat sheet; when every page has its pictures, First Ground is no longer a plan.
