Act II — First Ground

Page 12 — The Air Is Wrong

The twelfth page is owed the air, and the air is what I tested, and the testing was done before the sun had fully come up on the fourth morning, because the air does not wait for the sun, and the not-waiting is the one thing I could not wait through.

The Air Is Wrong

I will say what the testing is, because the record owes the testing its own page. It is the first of the archmage's work. I learned it in the old world, on the old planes, in the old words. The testing was done the way the testing is done: by the four planes, in order, each one asked and each one answered, the asking made the old way, in the old words, and the old words are the ones I have kept since the first morning of the old world.

I want the record to be plain about that, because the plain is the one thing the test does not lie about: I did not change the asking. Same order, same words, same hand, same breath. The answering that came back was not the same answering.

Magic works here.

I want that said once, plainly, and kept, because the plain is the first of the test's findings. The Elemental Planes answer the way they should. Fire is fire, water is water, earth is earth, air is air — the four are the four I have known since the first morning of the old world, and the four did not stop being the four the moment the world changed. The planes are not the broken thing. The broken thing is the rules: the rules are different, and the difference is not a thing. It is a not-thing, and the not-thing is the one the world keeps where the rules used to stand.

A rule you can hold in your hand is a thing, and I can fight a thing: a thing has a weight, a shape, a give, and the give is the one thing the fighter spends. A not-thing has none of those. The not-thing has the place where the thing was, and the place is the one thing the world keeps, and the keeping is the whole of the not-thing to me.

I held a coal of fire in my palm.

The coal was the coal. The fire itself was still the fire — the fire did what fire does — and the still-being was the courtesy the plane kept for the old world on the fourth morning of the new one. And the what was wrong.

Not more. Not less. Shaped.

I want the record to be exact. The heat came out of the coal in the right amount. I weighed it the way I have weighed a thousand heats, and the amount was right. The right amount was the wrong shape. The heat came out even — flat, level, going out in all directions the same way a word comes out of a mouth that has been told exactly what to say. I did not tell the coal that. I told it the coal — I have told it ten thousand coals in the old world, and the ten thousand are the work behind the hand.

This coal had been told. Not by me — told by the world it is in. The heat came back the way the pull comes back when the world has had a word with it: even, and deliberate, and going somewhere. I have felt fire that was angry, and fire that was tired, and fire that was mine, and the record has the three names: angry, tired, mine. This was none of those. This was fire that had been told, and the being-told was the one thing fire should not be, because fire in the old world was not a word — it was a voice, and the voice was the one thing the fire kept for itself.

I let the coal go. It fell to the black sand and went out. The going out was the one thing in the wrong world that behaved. It fell. Down. The way it had fallen in the old world, for ten thousand falls, and the ten thousand were the work of the old world on the coal. The record has its one line: it fell.

The planes answer, I told the others. But the answering is not what it was. We are going to have to learn the new world's magic the way you learn a language — slowly, and with an accent, and never without the sense that someone is listening.

I said it standing, with my hand still open where the coal had been. The open hand is the archmage's sign for the word told — an open hand is a hand that has not yet decided whether to take back what it was told. The four of them stood where the four of them stand: Rumzuck with his hand on the boss, Smackage with his palm an inch above the sand, Zahlia with her face up, Wreckreate at the line where the water comes in.

Slowly, and with an accent. I want the record to keep the two words, because the two are the ones the new world's magic is made of. Slowly — in the old world, the asking was the answering; the fire answered in the same breath that asked it, and the same-breath was the whole of the old world's magic to me. The new world has changed the same-breath to slowly. With an accent — the old world's magic had no accent, because it was spoken in the old world's words, and the words were the world's own. Here the words are not the world's own. The world has the words I speak, and the having is the one thing the world keeps where its own words would be.

Never without the sense that someone is listening.

I will say the third word, because the third is the one the saying lives on. In the old world, when the magic was done, the world let go of the word — the world took it the way it took the sound on the second night, without looking up. Here the world does not let go of the word. The word stays in the world after the magic is done. I felt it stay in the coal. I felt it stay in the heat. The word sat in the wrong world after I had done speaking it, and the sitting was the one thing the twelfth page found that the first eleven did not: the first eleven were about the world not taking, and the not-taking was the one thing the camp had already learned; the sitting is the world taking, and the taking is the one thing the camp has not yet learned to be afraid of.

Zahlia asked what happens when you say the word wrong.

I will keep the asking, because the asking is the one thing the twelfth page ends on. She asked it with her face still up, because the sky had not changed its color. What happens when you say the word wrong?

In the old world, a wrong word undid the magic. The magic came apart the way a held breath comes apart — all at once. The world took the wrong word and did not keep it. The world in the old world let go.

Here the world does not let go.

So I did not answer.

I want the record to keep the not-answering, and I will keep it plain: it was the first time all day that I did not have an answer, and the not-having was the whole of the silence. I am telling you that, because the not-answering is where this story is going to live. I have looked for the answer the way I looked for the name on the eleventh page — with the craft, with the words, with the four planes asked in order — and the answer is not there. The world here keeps what the world there let go, and the keeping is the one thing I cannot test my way past, because the testing is a word, and the world keeps the words.

The air was wrong. I will say it once, the way the record says it: the air was wrong in the way the coal was wrong — not more, not less, shaped. The air came in over the black sand even and deliberate, going somewhere, and the going-somewhere was the one thing air should not do, because air in the old world did not go anywhere; air in the old world was, and the whole of the being is the one the new world has taken. The taking is the one I carried back to camp in the open hand.

The thirteenth page is owed the ground. The ground is Smackage's. I will not take it from him.
