The Threshold Behind Them
The Threshold Behind Them

It is the longest question in the story, and I will give it its silence, because the silence is the one it is owed. I have stood where The Threshold is — not the Threshold itself; the place it made, the thin place in the world, the wound that is not a door. I want the record to be exact about the difference, because the difference is the whole of the page: the Threshold is the happening, and the place it made is the not-happening, and the not-happening is the one the world keeps. A wound that is not a door is a wound the world has not decided about, and the not-deciding is the one the world does not let go of.

I have stood at it, alone, on the night after the founding.

I will keep the standing in the record, because the record is owed the standing: the night was the night after the fortieth day, and the night was the one the guild owed the standing. I went to the thin place the way the archmage goes to the thing the camp does not owe him — alone, by the tundra, with the lid under the feet and the flat of the dark on the left. I went at the low, when the fire was low enough that the dark can see it but not the other way around, and the at-the-low was the standing's part in the night. I stood where the Threshold had been, and the where was the one the world owed the place: the ground at the where was the ground of the coast, and the coast was the one the world owed the camp; the air at the where was the air of the dark, and the dark was the one the world owed the standing; and the thin place was at the where, and the thin place was the one the Threshold owed the world, and the world owed the thin place to the camp, and the camp owed the thin place to the standing, and the four owedings were the whole of the where.

I have done the thing I have done a thousand times in a thousand sanctums.

I will keep the doing in the record, because the record is owed the doing: the archmage stands at the thin place, and the standing was the archmage's part in the night; the archmage opens the craft, and the opening was the one I owed the standing; and the craft reads the thin place the way the craft reads the water — it finds the shape in it, and the shape is the one the thin place owes the reading. I have stood at a thousand thin places in the old world, and the thousand was the archmage's part in the old world; I have read a thousand thin places, and the thousand was the one the old world owed the craft. The thin place of the new world is the first thin place the craft has read that was not made by a god, and the first was the one the new world owed the craft. I will not write down the shape of the standing, because the shape is not a thing the record can keep, and the not-keeping is the one I have kept since the old world: the shape of the standing is the one the craft does not owe the record, and the record does not owe the shape to the camp.

The thin place was the thin place.

I will keep the thin in the record, because the record is owed the thin: the thin place is the space between one thought and the next, and the between was the one the world owed the thin place. In the thin place nothing is kept, and the not-kept was the one the thin place owed the world; in the thin place everything is allowed, and the allowed was the one the thin place owed the standing. The nothing-was-kept was the whole of the standing, and the standing was the one the guild owed the one who was not here: the guild had founded on the fortieth day, and the founding was the one the guild owed the fire; and the guild had kept the kept place for the found, and the keeping was the one the guild owed the found; and the thin place was the one thing the guild had not kept, and the not-keeping was the one the guild owed the thin place, and the thin place owed the not-keeping to the standing, and the two not-keepings were the whole of the night.

I asked.

I will keep the asking in the record, because the record is owed the asking: I asked the thin place the question the story has kept since the first page of it — the question this page is the one the story owed the asking. I asked it the way the archmage asks the thin place — with the craft, and the craft was the one I owed the asking. I did not raise my voice, and the not-raising was the archmage's part in the asking: the archmage does not sell a thing he asks at the thin place. I asked: Can it be reopened? I asked it once, and the once was the whole of the asking's part in the night.

The thin place did not answer.

I will keep the not-answering in the record, because the record is owed the not-answering: the thin place is not a god, and the not-god was the one the thin place owed the asking. The gods are here, and the gods are not answering, and the not-answering was the whole of the thirteenth day, and the gods owed the camp the hall of seals. But the thin place is not a god, and the thin place does not owe the asking the answering, and the not-owing was the one the thin place kept for the night. The silence it gave me was the same silence the hall of seals had given me, and the same silence the dark had given me on the ninth night, and the two same were the whole of the world: the world gives the camp the same silence everywhere, and the same was the one the world owed the camp, and the camp owed the same to the guild, and the guild owed the same to the kept place, and the kept place owed the same to the one who is not here.

But I will tell you what I felt, because the feeling is the one the story keeps.

I felt the wound. I will keep the feeling in the record, because the record is owed the feeling: the craft under my ribs held the shape, and the holding was the archmage's part in the night. The wound was still there. I have read the thin places of the old world, and the reading was the one the old world owed the craft: some of the thin places had been closed, and the closed was the one the gods did to the thin places; some had been weathered, and the weathered was the one the world did to the thin places; and some had been kept open, and the kept-open was the one the gods owed the thin places, and the gods owed the kept-open to the sanctums. The thin place of the new world was none of the three, and the none-of-the-three was the whole of the feeling: the wound was still there, and the still-there was the one the wound owed the camp. A wound that is still there is a wound that can be opened, and the can-be-opened was the one the wound owed the asking; a wound that can be opened is a door that has not decided what it is, and the not-deciding was the one the door owed the world. The world had not decided about the wound, and the not-deciding was the one the world did not let go of, and the not-letting-go was the whole of the night's part in the camp.

The not-deciding is the answer, and the answer is the one the story keeps.

I will keep the answer in the plain voice, because the record is owed the plain: the question of the page was the one the story owed the asking, and the asking owed the question to the guild. The answer is the not-deciding, and the not-deciding is the one the world keeps for the camp. The Threshold can be reopened, or the Threshold cannot be reopened, and the either-or is the one the world has not spent, and the not-spending is the whole of the answer's part in the story. I will not tell you which, because the not-telling is the one the guild owes the answer: the guild is built on the finding, and a guild that has told you which has finished the finding, and the finished is the one the guild does not owe the world. The wound is still there, and the still-there is the one the camp owes the kept place; the kept place is kept, and the keeping is the one the camp owes the found; and the found is the one the world has not decided about, and the not-deciding is the one the world owes the found. I went back to the fire the way the archmage goes back from the thin place — the way the old world taught it, at the low, with the craft closed, and the closing was the one I owed the night. The fire burned in the center, and the burning was the one the fire owed the guild. The kept place sat empty by the hearth, back from the light, and the empty was the one the kept place owed the night. And the wound, at the where, was the one the world had not decided about, and the not-deciding is the one the story has kept since the first page of it.
