The Space Between
The Threshold is the boundary between universes — a place that is not a place, a space that exists only at the edges of other spaces. It is where the Veil is thin enough to step through, and where The Drop happened. It is not a landmark on any map of any world, because there is no map on which it sits. The Threshold is a condition, not a location: a thinning, a wear, a seam where one universe stops being certain about its own edges. It does not stand in a landscape. It stands in the way a wound stands in a body — inside, under the skin, where the skin should be whole.
Witnesses who have been through it describe it differently, and the difference is the point. A door in the snow. A seam in the sky. A crossroads where the light bends wrong and the air tastes of somewhere else. The common thread: the light does not arrive, it arrives late, and the grey of it is the grey of a room with no windows, and the dark at the edges is the black of a closed door, and the only light the space keeps is the white of snow that should not be there, and the silence has a weight to it, the weight of a held breath. The space between has no ground you can stand on for long, and the not-standing is the whole of the crossing, because the crossing is the falling and the falling is the question.
Overview
- Nature: The Threshold is not a fixed location. It is a condition — a place where the membrane between universes has worn thin. It can appear anywhere: a crossroads, a frozen lake, the edge of a battlefield, a door that was not there yesterday. It appears where something has been sent, not where someone is looking.
- Appearance: A door in the snow. A seam in the sky. A place where the light bends wrong and the air tastes of somewhere else. The witnesses do not agree, and the not-agreeing is the Threshold's own signature.
- Rules: You cannot find the Threshold by looking for it. It finds you. Crossing is not voluntary — something or someone has to send you. What comes through is not always what went in. And the sending does not come from a door: it comes from a hand, a name, a choice made on the other side of the Veil, and the choosing is the whole of the crossing.
- Danger: The Threshold does not discriminate. A god can be sent through it the same way a child can. The Threshold does not care. The Threshold is a door, and doors do not choose who walks through them.
The Rules
The crossing rules, as far as they have been written down:
- You cannot cross on your own. The Threshold does not open for a visitor. It opens for the sent — the sent is the only key, and the key is not a thing you can hold.
- The sending is deliberate. Whatever sent Uaellaen and his companions chose to send them, and the choosing is the one fact the story cannot yet confirm, because the sender is unnamed, and the not-naming is deliberate, because a name would be a door, and the door is not meant to be walked back.
- The Drop is not a door you can reopen from the far side. The Veil does not thin for a second look. What the Threshold gives, it gives once, and the once is the whole of the law.
- What comes through is not always what went in. The six who went were the six the story has — most of them together, one or two elsewhere — and the elsewhere is the first open question of the current world.
In the Story
The Threshold is the mechanism of the entire backstory-to-present transition. Uaellaen and his companions were sent through it by a demi-god of the old world — deliberately unnamed, the mystery staying open for later episodes — and the not-naming is the longest silence in the story. The Threshold is where the old world ends and the current story begins.
