Wreckreate read the water, and he stopped.

Something Sleeps Beneath It

I want the record to be careful about this page, because the careful is the whole of the camp. I will say that in the plain voice, because the record is owed the careful: the camp stood at the edge of the lake on the fifteenth afternoon, and the standing was the camp's part in the morning — Rumzuck at the front with the grip under his arm, Smackage with his palm off the ground, Zahlia a little back from the water with her hands in her lap, and me where the craft's part of the camp is. Wreckreate was at the water's line, and the at-the-line was the water-reader's part in the afternoon. He had put his hand out over the silver, and the over-the-silver was the reading's beginning. And then he stopped, and the stopping was the whole of the afternoon, and the stopping is the one the record is owed on this page.

The stopping was the kind the water-reader does only once in a long while.

I have known the water-reader since the old world, and the knowing was the archmage's part in the camp. I will say the knowing in the record, because the record is owed the knowing: the water-reader reads the way he reads — he reads the water the way the ground-reader reads the ground, with the whole of the body in the reading, and the whole-of-the-body was the water-reader's part in the old world. When the water is clean, his hands go in, and the going-in is the reading's part in the water. When the water is wrong, he kneels, and the kneeling is the reading's part in the not-clean. When the water is the thing it was on the fifteenth afternoon, he puts his hand out over it and holds it there, and the holding was the reading's part in the not-going-in. I have seen the holding once before, in the old world, and I will not say where, and the not-saying was the one the archmage owed the old world. The two holdings were the whole of the water-reader's part in the two worlds.

He read the water, and the reading was the one the camp owed the lake.

I want the record to be careful about the reading, because the careful is the whole of the camp. The reading of Wreckreate is the kind of reading that has already finished before it is the reading — he had already finished the reading before he told us of it, and the telling was only the part of it that had to be spoken. I have held the shape of a hundred readings, and the holding was the archmage's part in the camp: the shape of the water-reader's reading is the shape of a thing that has a floor, and the floor was the one the water owed the reading, and the water did not have it. I held the shape of the reading on the fifteenth afternoon, and the holding was the craft's part in the afternoon, and the shape had no floor in it, and the no-floor was the whole of the reading's part in the water. The craft under my ribs went quiet the way the craft goes quiet when the camp keeps its ground, and the going-quiet was the archmage's part in the not-reading.

There is something under it, he said.

I will keep the saying in the record, because the record is owed the saying. He said it at the water's line, with his hand still out over the silver, and the hand-still-out was the water-reader's part in the telling. His voice was the voice the water-reader has when the reading is done and the telling is the only part of it left — the voice of the letter read, and the letter-read was the whole of the voice's part in the afternoon. I will say the size the way the reading gave it to me, he said. I will keep that in the record too, because the record is owed the size: the water-reader does not say the size the way a man says the size — he says it the way the reading gave it to him, and the the-way-it-gave-it was the water-reader's part in the size. The size was the one the water owed the reading, and the water did not let the reading have it, and the not-letting was the size's part in the water.

It is asleep.

The asleep was the second of the saying, and the second was the one the saying owed the camp. I will keep the asleep in the record, because the record is owed the asleep: the water-reader says asleep the way the ground-reader says the ground knows — not as a thing the water is, but as a thing the water has been doing, and the doing was the asleep's part in the water. The sleeping is the one the lake's floor keeps, and the floor is the lid under everything, and the lid is the one the ground keeps under the coast and under the tundra and under the lake, and the three lid-parts were the ground's part in the new world. The lid under the lake was the lid that had been put down, and the put-down was the whole of the lake's part in the sleep.

It is very large.

The very-large was the third of the saying, and the third was the one the saying owed the camp. I will say the very-large in the plain voice, because the record is owed the very-large: the water-reader had said the size the way the reading gave it to him, and the the-way-it-gave-it was the one the water did not let go of. I looked at the lake while he said it, and the looking was the archmage's part in the afternoon. The lake was the lake — flat, and the flat was the one the water kept for the reading; silver, and the silver was the one the light kept for the lake. I looked for the very-large in the lake, and the looking-for was the craft's part in the afternoon, and the craft found the suggestion, and the finding was the one the craft owed the record. I will say the suggestion in the record, because the record is owed the suggestion, and I will say it the way the record is owed it: there was the faintest suggestion of a shape under the silver, and the suggestion was the only part of it I will admit to, because the admitting is where the world finds out. The admitting of the suggestion was the archmage's part in the afternoon, and the part was the one the craft did not let go of. The suggestion was the shape under the silver, and the shape was the very-large's part in the water, and the water kept the shape the way the water keeps everything on this coast — without looking up.

And it has been asleep a very long time — longer than the coast, longer than the scar, longer than the world has been this world.

I will keep the last part in the record, because the record is owed the last part, and I will not dress it, because the not-dressing is the one the water-reader owed the saying. He said the last part the way he says everything — which is to say he had already finished the saying and was waiting for the rest of us to catch up. The three longers were the whole of the last part: longer than the coast, and the coast was the one the world had been the coast since the first morning on the broken shore; longer than the scar, and the scar was the one the coast kept in its broken line, the scar that was the Threshold's part in the world; and longer than the world has been this world, and the this-world was the one the crossing had made of it, and the making was the Threshold's part in the world. The sleep was older than the world had been the world, and the older-than was the sleep's part in the lake, and the part was the one the water did not let go of.

I looked at the lake. The lake gave me nothing to look at, and the giving-nothing was the thing.

I will keep the giving-nothing in the record, because the record is owed the giving-nothing: the craft under my ribs can find a shape in water, and the finding was the work the craft owed the archmage — I had found the suggestion, and the suggestion was the only part of it the craft would give me, and the only-part was the craft's part in the not-finding. The lake gave nothing else, and the nothing-else was the lake's part in the afternoon. The water did not ripple, and the not-rippling was the lake's part in the giving-nothing. The silver did not move, and the not-moving was the light's part in the giving-nothing. And the camp stood at the edge of it, and the standing was the camp's part in the giving-nothing. The five of us took the saying the way the camp takes the thing that is the law: Rumzuck's hands went back over the grip, and the going-back was the ogre's part in the not-reading; Smackage put his palm flat on the tundra, and the flat was the ground's part in the not-reading — the ground does not read under the lid, and the not-reading was the ground's part in the sleep; Zahlia's hands were in her lap, and the in-the-lap was the Veil's part in the not-holding.

I looked at Wreckreate's face instead, and his face was the face of a man who has been reading a letter he does not like.

I will keep the face in the record, because the record is owed the face: I have known the face since the old world — the face the water-reader has at the water when the reading is the thing the water does not owe him, and the not-owing was the face's part in the old world. The face had been that face on the third morning, at the camp's water, when the current ran east, and the east was the one the water owed the finding, and the finding had not come back. The face had been that face on the fourteenth, at the fire, when the name came to the camp, and the name was the one the water-reader owed the fourteenth morning. And the face was that face on the fifteenth, at the lake, when the reading was the thing the water did not owe him, and the not-owing was the whole of the face's part in the afternoon. The not-liking was the one he kept, and the keeping was the water-reader's part in the face: he did not put the not-liking in the saying, and the not-putting was the one the water-reader owed the camp — the saying was the saying, and the face was the face, and the two were the whole of the water-reader's part in the fifteenth afternoon of the new world, and the afternoon was the one the camp kept for the lake, and the lake kept it for the sleep, and the sleep is the one the story has kept since the first page of it.
