Observers

Eyes in the dark. Faceless, robed, and endlessly patient — they record everything, and they consider the record a promise the dark keeps.

Overview

Observers are the faceless kin of the dark. They record everything, they consider the record a promise the dark keeps for them, and they do not speak, because the record speaks for them.

Habitat

Observers live in The Silent Spires, a city of pale stone where the record is the only honest promise. They need three things: a spire high enough to hold the record, a silence wide enough to carry the witness, and a stranger who is worth the entry. They are settled in spires around the silent-rings, with record-lines across the mapped current; an observer who has not kept a record in a season is called "the one who forgot the spire."

Appearance

The observer silhouette is the tall, narrow, robed shape — heavy through the hood and the shoulders, with the head sitting a little too high on the body, like a word that is waiting for an entry. Males stand 1.68 m to 1.83 m, heavy through the hood and shoulder, with a low, barked voice; they are the witnesses, the first entry, and the ones who stand at the edge and do not move. Females stand 1.68 m, leaner and quicker, with a thinner robe and a longer memory; they are the scribes, the ones whose hand keeps the record, and the ones whose nod is the spire. Observers have no sexes that the record has ever confirmed — there are two forms: the scribe, which records, and the witness, which stands at the edge and does not move. The scribe is the record; the witness is the dark. An observer that is both at once is an observer that has finished its record, and is already gone. The base robe is a pale grey, the color of old spire-stone seen through a dark glass, with a faint pattern of deeper, sea-black patches along the hem and a clean, deliberate bone-white at the cowl and the finger-tip that is the observer line's most persistent claim. The face is the mark: faceless, hooded, with eyes that are pale and see in the dark — the record, always clean, and always pointed at something. Males carry the line in the witness and the edge; females in the record and the entry. They do not age, but they can be killed, and they do not like being reminded of it. They eat the dark: the record, the witness, the silence, and the promise that keeps the record honest. Everyday wear: the robe is the body — a wrap of woven spire-silk at the waist, a single record bead at the throat, and no armor, because the record is the armor and the spire is the home.

Behavior

Disposition: clannish, territorial, honor-bound. In peace, observers are watchful, deliberate, and absolutely certain of the spire — they have the record, and they let the surface know it. In war they fight as the dark fights: the entry first, the word second, the patient, precise holding of the witness third. Strangers on the surface are either a witness or a mistake, and the mistake is the one the dark remembers. The social unit is the spire, 10–30 strong, around the silent-rings — no spire follows a witness, it follows the record-keeper whose silence is truest. Two signature quirks: an observer who is being lied to will not call it out — they will simply keep the record for the lie and wait, because the keeping is the point. And they keep the silence for a lifetime: a silence the dark has kept is a debt, and the debt is paid in entry.

Warfare & Markings

Tactics: the ambush of the record — the observer line does not fight in the open current; it fights as the spire fights, with the entry, the word, and the long, deliberate patience of the one who has already kept the silence. Armor: none, by choice — the record is the armor, and an observer who wears metal has already decided the spire is not enough. Weapons: the robe that is not a weapon but is used like one, and the entry that is not a weapon but is used like one. War markings: the Record-Notch, a deliberate chip in the left finger for every record kept, worn as a record of the long spire; the Spire-Knot, a single knot in the hair for every spire oath kept, in sea-black; and the Silence-Brand, a small, deliberate mark on the inner wrist — the first silence the wearer ever kept, worn as a mark of the beginning. Post-battle: the dead are carried to the spire, their names spoken over the record, and their robes laid across the threshold — an observer buried without their record is buried as a surface.

Magic Alignment

Primary domain: illusion — observer magic is the will, the record, the patient, precise shaping of the dark across the silent-rings. Secondaries: divination and abjuration. Named inborns: Spire-Sense (an observer can feel the silence's mood a day before it is broken, and the feeling is not a choice), Dark-Sight (an observer sees in the dark the way a human sees in the light, and the seeing is not a choice), Record-Carry (an observer's entry carries across the spire, and the carrying is not a choice). Signature power: the Keeper's Word — an observer can speak a word in the spire tongue and let it land on a record, and the record will keep the word until the silence is done. Limitation: observer magic is spent on the spire; an observer who has spent their keeper's word must sit in the dry dark for one day, and the day is the worst one of the spire.

Religion

Observers keep Omnath, the Last Memory as their primary god — the knowledge, the record, the silence that is the spire's own law. The spire is Omnath's library, and the observer is the library's record. Priestly class: the Record-Keeper, who keeps the spire-temple and speaks the name at every rite. Heresy is not blasphemy — it is a word broken in the spire, and there is no rite for that one; the spire simply stops keeping the record with the breaker.

Society

Spires of 10–30, led by the Record-Keeper, rank decided by the record — whose silence is truest.

Home

They live in The Silent Spires, a city of pale stone where the record is the only honest promise.

Relations

The "the record is the only honest promise" faction — spire neighbors whose silence is a price, and the ones whose nod is the witness. The Morvane the Veilwarden of the Veil is the post the spire does not test — the warden keeps the door and the spire keeps the record, and the two are the same dark seen from two silences, so a door that is counted is a door the spire will keep, and the keeping is the whole of the treaty. The Dark Elf line of the watch is the neighbor the record tolerates — the dark-elf keeps the line and the spire keeps the record, and the two have learned that a line that is not written is a line that is not a promise, and the not-writing is the whole of the distance. The Demi-God servants of the light have learned the hard way that an entry in the record is not a warning, it is a fact — the demi-god keeps the light and the spire keeps the dark, and the demi-god who has been recorded is the demi-god the spire has already decided is a witness, and the deciding is the whole of the law. The dark servants of the pantheon keep their distance at the silence line — Mordra, the Unraveler keeps her unraveling out of the record, Khorvane, the Endless Hunger keeps his hunger fed by the entry and not the spire, and Vessurax, the Veiled Eye keeps the veiled eye open to the record, and the keeping is the whole of the distance, because the god who has been recorded is the god the spire has already measured, and the measuring is the whole of the law. Above, the ground-folk of The Forgotten are the ones the record tests most often, and the testing is the whole of the bond, because the forgotten are the ones the spire keeps the record for, and the keeping is the whole of the promise. Uaellaen keeps a page of the spire in the wiki — the record, the witness, the silence that is kept — and the keeping is the whole of the record, because the camp has learned that an observer who has been written about is an observer who has been witnessed with, and the witnessing-with is the whole of the welcome.

In the Story

In the current story, the Observers are the silence in the dark — the record Uaellaen writes about when the entry is the law. The Forgotten keep their distance at the spire line, and the distance has held for two seasons. This season a record came back with an entry the spire had not kept — an entry that the Record-Keeper does not remember, and the not-remembering is the whole of the warning, because the spire keeps its record, and the record has started to write itself. The entry is the one the camp has not been shown, and the showing is the hand, and the hand is the whole of the story.

"You stand in our spire and you make a sound. Good. Now we know where you are, and you have made our record's choice for us. The price is a witness. You have one to give, or you are already a record." — Record-Keeper The Silent
