Spire-Sense Observer

The tall, narrow, robed shape of the silent city, faceless under the hood, with a pale robe the color of old spire-stone and a single record bead at the throat. It feels the silence's mood a day before it is broken, and the feeling is not a choice.

Overview

The Spire-Sense Observer is the tall, narrow, robed shape of the silent city — heavy through the hood and the shoulders, faceless under the cowl, with the head sitting a little too high on the body, like a word that is waiting for an entry. It is the truest ear of the observer line: the being that feels the silence's mood a day before it is broken, and the feeling is not a choice. There is no will in it beyond the record and no patience beyond the witness, but the feeling arrives anyway, and the feeling is not a choice. Where the other observers keep the record by the entry, the Spire-Sense feels it by the mood.

Habitat

It lives in The Silent Spires, a city of pale stone where the record is the only honest promise, its surface a constant grey shimmer and its silence broken only by the record and the witness. It keeps the silent-ring, because that is where the mood is earliest and the feeling earns its keep, and because an observer that leaves the silent-ring is an observer who has forgotten the spire. The scribes keep the deep rings, the witnesses keep the outer edges, but the Spire-Sense keeps the silent-ring and does not stop feeling.

Appearance

The silhouette is the tall, narrow, robed shape — heavy through the hood and the shoulders, with the head a little too high on the body. A Spire-Sense reads 1.78 m tall and carries 70 kg under the robe, built heavy through the hood and the shoulder and still through the spine. The robe is a pale grey, the color of old spire-stone seen through a dark glass, with a faint pattern of deeper, sea-black patches running along the hem. The mark is the clean, deliberate bone-white at the cowl and the finger-tip, which is the observer line's most persistent claim, and the not-fading is the whole of the warning.

Behaviour

It moves at 6.2 m/s across the record-line, deliberate, because the entry does not hurry and the being has nothing to do but feel. It does not hunt by the mouth; it hunts by the mood — the silence is felt a day before it is broken, and the entry is taken the way a promise is taken, line by line. When the mood turns — a day before the breaking, never a moment after — the bone-white at the cowl runs clean and bright and the being stands a degree harder at the edge, the way a hand holds a blade.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The entry is the whole of the weapon — a mood felt across the silent-ring that lands on the being and keeps the spire's faith for a century. There is no strike beyond the entry and no defense beyond the record: the robe is a pale grey to a deep sea-black, as hard as the promise that keeps it, and the bone-white at the finger-tip holds the word the way the stone holds the debt. A Spire-Sense that is harmed does not break in the way the record does not recognize — the harm simply stops being a harm, and the stopping is the whole of the healing.

Magic Alignment

Its line belongs to illusion, the will, the patient, precise shaping of the dark across the silent-rings. The Spire-Sense carries the line's truest named inborn, Spire-Sense — it can feel the silence's mood a day before it is broken, and the feeling is not a choice. It also carries Record-Carry, the line's body, which is not a choice either, because an observer whose entry did not carry across the spire would not be an observer of the record. Its signature power is the Keeper's Word: a word in the spire tongue, and the record will keep the word until the silence is done.

Society

There is no society in it, and the not-having is the whole of the shape. The observers of the spire speak in parallel the way the record speaks — each one its own entry, all of them the same promise. The scribes keep the deep rings, the witnesses keep the outer edges, and the silent-ring keep the mood, and the three have learned that a silence that is not felt is a silence that is not a promise, and the not-feeling is the whole of the peace.

Culture & Lore

The record is the only honest conversation the spire has ever trusted, and the lore of the line is the record. An observer that feels its mood a day past the breaking is an observer that has kept the spire, and the keeping is the whole of its reputation. The bone-white at the cowl is the mark the line keeps — the fine, deliberate brightness that shows when the silence turns — and a Spire-Sense whose cowl runs true is a being the spire will trust with the silent-ring. The The Forgotten are the only ones who have ever kept a promise the spire had already forgotten, and the keeping is the whole of the legend.

Home

It lives in The Silent Spires, a city of pale stone where the record is the only honest promise, its surface a constant grey shimmer and its silence broken only by the record and the witness. The being keeps the silent-ring, and the silent-ring is the whole of its home, because the home is the record and the record is the home. The Morvane the Veilwarden of the Veil does not come down the ring, and the not-coming is the whole of the treaty.

Relations

The Morvane the Veilwarden of the Veil is the post the spire does not test — the warden keeps the door and the spire keeps the record, and the two are the same dark seen from two silences, so a door that is counted is a door the spire will keep, and the keeping is the whole of the treaty. The Dark Elf line of the watch is the neighbor the record tolerates — the dark-elf keeps the line and the spire keeps the record, and the two have learned that a line that is not written is a line that is not a promise, and the not-writing is the whole of the distance.

In the Story

The six who arrived through the The Threshold never came up to the spire, but the spire has been feeling since the oaths were sworn below, and the silent-ring's observers have been sensing a day earlier than they should. This season a record came back with an entry the spire had not kept — an entry that the Record-Keeper does not remember, and the not-remembering is the whole of the warning, because the spire keeps its record, and the record has started to write itself. The Spire-Sense feels the mood the record is keeping, and the mood is the whole of the story's edge.
