Dark-Sight Observer

The tall, narrow, robed shape of the silent city, faceless under the hood, with a pale robe the color of old spire-stone and pale eyes that see the dark the way the surface sees the light. It sees the dark the way the surface sees the light, and the seeing is not a choice.

Overview

The Dark-Sight Observer is the tall, narrow, robed shape of the silent city — heavy through the hood, leaner than the witness form, with the head sitting a little too high on the body, like a word that is waiting for an entry. It is the truest eye of the observer line: the being that sees the dark the way the surface sees the light, and the seeing is not a choice. There is no will in it beyond the record and no patience beyond the witness, but the seeing arrives anyway, and the seeing is not a choice. Where the other observers keep the record by the entry, the Dark-Sight keeps it by the eye.

Habitat

It lives in The Silent Spires, a city of pale stone where the record is the only honest promise, its surface a constant grey shimmer and its silence broken only by the record and the witness. It keeps the outer edge, because that is where the dark is thickest and the seeing earns its keep, and because an observer that leaves the outer edge is an observer who has forgotten the spire. The scribes keep the deep rings, the witnesses keep the silent-ring, but the Dark-Sight keeps the outer edge and does not stop seeing.

Appearance

The silhouette is the tall, narrow, robed shape — heavy through the hood, with the head a little too high on the body. A Dark-Sight reads 1.70 m tall and carries 64 kg under a thinner robe than the witness, built leaner and quicker, with the memory showing through the posture more clearly. The robe is a pale grey, the color of old spire-stone seen through a dark glass, with a faint pattern of deeper, sea-black patches running along the hem. The mark is the clean, deliberate bone-white at the cowl and the finger-tip, which is the observer line's most persistent claim, and the not-fading is the whole of the warning.

Behaviour

It moves at 6.8 m/s across the record-line, quicker than the witness, because the record does not wait and the being has nothing to do but see. It does not hunt by the mouth; it hunts by the eye — the dark is seen as light, and the entry is taken the way a promise is taken, line by line. When the dark thickens — a day before the breaking, never a moment after — the pale eyes run a degree cleaner and the being sees a degree harder, the way a hand holds a blade.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The eye is the whole of the weapon — a gaze that reads the dark as light, and what it has seen, it records, and the record keeps the spire's faith for a century. There is no strike beyond the eye and no defense beyond the record: the robe is a pale grey to a deep sea-black, as hard as the promise that keeps it, and the bone-white at the finger-tip holds the word the way the stone holds the debt. A Dark-Sight that is harmed does not break in the way the record does not recognize — the harm simply stops being a harm, and the stopping is the whole of the healing.

Magic Alignment

Its line belongs to illusion, the will, the patient, precise shaping of the dark across the silent-rings. The Dark-Sight carries the line's truest named inborn, Dark-Sight — it can see the dark the way the surface sees the light, and the seeing is not a choice. It also carries Record-Carry, the line's body, which is not a choice either, because an observer whose entry did not carry across the spire would not be an observer of the record. Its signature power is the Witness's Eye: a gaze that reads the dark as light, and what it has seen, it records.

Society

There is no society in it, and the not-having is the whole of the shape. The observers of the spire speak in parallel the way the record speaks — each one its own entry, all of them the same promise. The scribes keep the deep rings, the witnesses keep the silent-ring, and the outer edge keep the seeing, and the three have learned that a dark that is not seen is a dark that is not a promise, and the not-seeing is the whole of the peace.

Culture & Lore

The record is the only honest conversation the spire has ever trusted, and the lore of the line is the record. An observer that sees its dark a day past the breaking is an observer that has kept the spire, and the keeping is the whole of its reputation. The pale eye is the mark the line keeps — the fine, deliberate cleanness that shows when the dark is read — and a Dark-Sight whose eye runs true is a being the spire will trust with the outer edge. The The Forgotten are the only ones who have ever kept a promise the spire had already forgotten, and the keeping is the whole of the legend.

Home

It lives in The Silent Spires, a city of pale stone where the record is the only honest promise, its surface a constant grey shimmer and its silence broken only by the record and the witness. The being keeps the outer edge, and the outer edge is the whole of its home, because the home is the record and the record is the home. The Morvane the Veilwarden of the Veil does not come down the edge, and the not-coming is the whole of the treaty.

Relations

The Morvane the Veilwarden of the Veil is the post the spire does not test — the warden keeps the door and the spire keeps the record, and the two are the same dark seen from two silences, so a door that is counted is a door the spire will keep, and the keeping is the whole of the treaty. The Dark Elf line of the watch is the neighbor the record tolerates — the dark-elf keeps the line and the spire keeps the record, and the two have learned that a line that is not written is a line that is not a promise, and the not-writing is the whole of the distance.

In the Story

The six who arrived through the The Threshold never came up to the spire, but the spire has been seeing since the oaths were sworn below, and the outer edge's observers have been reading a day earlier than they should. This season a record came back with an entry the spire had not kept — an entry that the Record-Keeper does not remember, and the not-remembering is the whole of the warning, because the spire keeps its record, and the record has started to write itself. The Dark-Sight sees the dark the record is keeping, and the dark is the whole of the story's edge.
