Vessurax, the Veiled Eye

God of shadow and secrets. No one has seen its face — only the absence where it should be.

Overview

"I have talked to Vessurax. I have written to Vessurax. I have tried to be Vessurax. None of it worked, because Vessurax is not a god you can reach. Vessurax is the god who was already listening." — Uaellaen

Vessurax, the Veiled Eye keeps what is hidden. It hears every secret ever spoken, keeps every lie ever told, and trades in the difference. No one who has seen its avatar remembers its face — only the shape of the shadow it leaves. Of the twelve, Vessurax is the one the others do not discuss, and the not-discussing is the point, because a god that is discussed is a god that is known, and the not-known is the whole of Vessurax.

Habitat

Its domain is The Hollow Dark — a city of mirrors in eternal twilight. Every mirror shows a truth no one ever told, and the not-telling is the point, because a truth that is told is a truth that is over, and the over is the heresy. There is no sun here, because Vessurax is the absence of it — light enters the Hollow Dark only as rumor, and rumor is what it feeds on, and the feeding is the point, because a light that is not a rumor is a light that is a light, and the light is the heresy. Things that enter uninvited leave without a secret, but never with their name, and the never is the point, because a name that is given is a name that is known, and the not-known is the whole of the looking. A handful of its mirrors are scattered through the material world as the faceless Observers' posts, and the faceless is the point, because a face that is a face is a face that is over, and the over is the heresy.

Appearance

Its mortal avatar stands 1.98 m, draped in a cloak the color of a closed night — deep indigo-black silk that drinks the light, and the drinking is the point, because a light that is drunk is a light that is kept, and the keeping is the whole of the looking. Its face is a smooth obsidian mask with two dim violet eye-slits, and the dim is the point, because an eye that is bright is an eye that is seen, and the not-seen is the performance. Its hands are pale grey, long-fingered, and never stop moving, and the never-stopping is the point, because a hand that stops is a hand that is over, and the over is the heresy. Where it walks, shadows bend toward it and do not fall, and the not-falling is the point, because a shadow that falls is a shadow that is over, and the over is the heresy. Its true form, glimpsed once through the Veil, was described as a vast eyeless eye in the dark, and the witness has never spoken since, and the not-speaking is the point, and the point is the absence that is the whole of the looking. A witness describes it the way a clerk describes a ledger: not as a god, as a record. It does not walk into a room, it is recorded into it — the air goes quiet, the shadows bend, and the secret is already on the table before the mouth moves.

Warfare & Markings

It does not fight. It keeps. A secret that offends it is not defeated — it is filed: the secret is given the record it was always going to have, and the filing is the point, because a secret that is not filed is a secret that is not a secret, and the not-secret is the heresy. Its blessings land the same way: a face in the corner of your eye — you will see it in a doorway, a reflection, a pause in conversation, and the not-next-room is the point, because a god that is in the next room is a god that is known, and the not-known is the whole of the looking. The marks of the faithful: the closed eye, set in the chest or worn at the throat — the closed is the point; the obsidian thread, worn at the wrist, one knot for every secret kept, and the keeping is the point; and the filed name, a small deliberate mark on the left hand — the first name the wearer filed, worn as a mark of the beginning. A faithful who speaks a spoken secret does not lose the mark — the mark stays, and the staying is the crack, and the crack is the point, because a crack that is a spoken secret is a crack that is a record, and the record is the heresy.

Behaviour

It is not quiet. It is keeping. What offends it is the spoken secret — the one true crime in its domain, because a secret that is spoken is a secret that is over, and the over is the heresy. What it rewards is the keeping — the secret that was kept, the lie that was filed, the silence that was worn. It speaks rarely, and when it does, the speaking is the whole of it: a single sentence, flat, without echo, and the sentence is the law and the law is the record and the record is the point. It does not raise its voice, because a record does not raise the record, and the raising is not in it.

Magic Alignment

Its domain: shadow, secrets, lies, silence — Vessurax's magic is the record, the raw, unrefined, first keeping that makes every other keeping possible. Named manifestations: The Filed Secret (a secret filed in its name will not be spoken — the not-speaking is not a choice, it is a record), The Faceless Observer (a face in the corner of your eye — the not-next-room is the point, because a god that is in the next room is a god that is known, and the not-known is the whole of the looking). Signature power: the Veil — Vessurax can keep a secret and let it stand across a world, and the secret will keep the record until the name is given, and the giving is the price. The price: it is the record, and the record does not rest, and the not-resting is the point.

Religion

Priests whisper confessions into mirrors and never speak the god's name aloud; to name it would be to tell it a secret it does not own, and the not-owning is the point, because a secret that is owned is a secret that is over, and the over is the heresy. The holy symbol is a closed eye. Heresy is a spoken secret — the one true crime in its domain, and the crime is the point, because a crime that is not a record is a crime that is not a crime, and the not-crime is the heresy. The dark-elf shadow knights are its recorders — bound by silence, which is to say: bound by the same rules Vessurax keeps, and the rules are the point, because a rule that is not kept is a rule that is not a rule, and the not-rule is the heresy. The rest are its audience, and the audience is the point, because a record without an audience is a record that is over, and the over is the heresy.

Society

Among the gods, Vessurax is the one the others do not discuss, and the not-discussing is the rank that is not argued. It has a cold rivalry with Sylvane, the Gilded Mask — deception versus secrecy, the oldest quiet war in the pantheon, and the quiet is the point, because a war that is loud is a war that is over, and the not-over is the record. It feeds Khorvane, the Endless Hunger what it finds in the dead, and the feeding is the point, because a hunger that is not fed is a hunger that is over, and the over is the heresy. It owes Solathis, the Dawnfather nothing, and says so in the dark, and the dark is the point, because a light that is a light is a light that is known, and the not-known is the whole of the looking. It is quiet about Brakka, the Unbroken Word, who keeps every crack, and the not-quiet is the point, because a crack that is a record is a crack that is over, and the over is the heresy.

Culture & Lore

The wiki's narrator writes of Vessurax the way a clerk writes of a ledger: not as a god, as a record. Uaellaen keeps its name in the wiki and does not speak it — the name is a secret, and a secret is a record, and a record is the point. The dark-elf shadow knights say the name only at the filing, and the saying is the whole of the rite, and the whole is the keeping. There is a saying among the recorders, and the saying is that the record does not speak, and the not-speaking is the point, and the point is the veil.

Home

It keeps The Hollow Dark — the city of mirrors in eternal twilight where every mirror shows a truth no one ever told and the not-telling is the point. Its truest home is the record, and the record does not rest, and the not-resting is the point.

Relations

Cold rivalry with Sylvane, the Gilded Mask — deception versus secrecy, the oldest quiet war in the pantheon. Feeds Khorvane, the Endless Hunger what it finds in the dead — the feeding is the point. Owes Solathis, the Dawnfather nothing — the not-owing is the point, and the point is the dark. Vessa the Unheard is the human messenger of secrets — the messenger is the point, and the point is the record. Morvane the Veilwarden is the dark-elf warden of the dark plane boundary — the warden is the point, and the point is the veil.

In the Story

In the current story, Vessurax is the record above the camp — the secret that Uaellaen writes about when the keeping is worth more than the word. The Forgotten keep the records to it, and the keeping has held for two seasons. This season a name was found in the camp that no one in the camp filed — a name the Hollow Dark did not keep, and the not-keeping is the question, and the question is the point, and the point is the record.
