Overview
"You did not hear me. That is not the same as not knowing. There is a difference, and the difference is why you are still breathing." — Vessa
Vessa the Unheard is a human god-servant — the messenger of a god of secrets. She does not carry messages. She is the message, delivered. You will hear Vessa mentioned before you ever meet her. That is the point.
Habitat
She keeps in no court and in all of them at once, because that is where the whisper lives. She is at home in the doorway, the corridor, and the half-second after a sentence has been said and before it has been heard. She is not a creature of a place; she is a creature of a moment — the moment a truth needs to be somewhere and does not yet know where. She is found in every court, every temple, and every room where something important is about to be said and then unsaid, and she is always already there.
Appearance
Unremarkable, on purpose. Vessa stands 1.65 m and is built like an average of everyone you have ever briefly looked at: mid-height, mid-shouldered, a face that the eye files and then closes the file on. Her skin is plain ash-pink, her hair a dull brown worn loose and unremarkable, and her eyes are the pale gray of an overcast sky — the kind of gray you look through rather than at. She wears a plain brown dress and a gray cloak that would be forgettable if she were not so precisely, deliberately placed. Her distinguishing feature is the forgettability itself: you will remember the sentence, not the voice; the room, not the woman at the edge of it. There is no elder version of her — every Vessa looks like every other Vessa, because that is the job. She wears the brown dress, the gray cloak, and a small leather satchel that is always full and never opened in front of anyone.
Warfare & Markings
She fights the way a whisper fights — not a blow but a sentence, and the sentence has exactly one audience. She will not overpower you; she will say the one thing only you in the room can hear, and the hearing is the weapon. Her one true mark is the forgettability itself — the face the eye files and closes — and the small leather satchel that is always full and never opened. She wears the gray cloak and the plain brown dress, and in battle she keeps her voice low, because the low voice is the one that reaches.
Behaviour
Quiet, exact, and faintly amused. Vessa has delivered warnings to emperors and apologies to ghosts. She finds humans exhausting, and she keeps doing it anyway. She is not cold; she is precise about who hears what, and the precision makes her the most trusted and the most feared messenger in any court. She does not raise her voice and does not raise her hand; she only places a sentence exactly where it needs to be, and the placing is the point. She has a habit of arriving a half-step before the question is asked, and a habit of leaving before the answer is owed, and both habits are the job. She keeps no record of anyone who has been kind to her, and keeps a perfect record of everyone who has lied to her, and the asymmetry is deliberate.
Magic Alignment
Messenger of secrets. Her office is the divine: the messenger of a god of secrets — the one who delivers what gods need delivered, and what they need buried. Her named workings are The Unheard Word — a single sentence that only one person in the room will hear, the rest remembering the sentence but not the voice; The Long Post — a message sent to a person who is not yet born, already dead, or does not yet know they are a person, where delivery is not guaranteed but arrival is; and The Ledger of Whispers — everything she has heard, filed, and never repeated. The price: she carries the weight of every secret she has delivered, and the carrying never ends.
Society
She serves the god of secrets — Vessurax, the Veiled Eye — as its mortal messenger, and her office makes her the most trusted and the most feared person in any court. She is not of a guild; she is of an office, and the office travels. She is the one the court sends for and the one the court is afraid of, and both are true at the same time, and both are the point.
Culture & Lore
The wiki keeps her as the human messenger of secrets, and the tale is told mostly by the people who have heard her before they met her, because that is the only way to meet her. The old world said the whisper in every court; the new world says the same thing, and is slowly learning that the forgettability is the point, and the point is the message.
Home
She keeps in no fixed place, in every court at once and in none of them specifically. Her truest home is the moment a truth needs to be somewhere, and that moment travels.
Relations
Vessurax, the Veiled Eye — the god of secrets she serves, the one who sends and the one who receives. The courts she moves through — allies, rivals, and the occasional villain whose weapon is a sentence delivered at exactly the wrong moment. She is the "information you did not ask for" character: the ally who arrives with the one fact you needed, the rival who knows what you did in the dark, and the villain whose weapon is a sentence at the wrong moment.
In the Story
Vessa is the "information you did not ask for" character — the ally who arrives with the one fact you needed, the rival who knows what you did in the dark, and the villain whose weapon is a sentence delivered at exactly the wrong moment. She is the one the story reaches for when a truth needs to be delivered and does not yet know where, and she is always already there.
