Overview
Vampires are the pale, fanged night-lords of the crypt. They do not age, they do not die, and they consider the ledger of blood a promise the crypt keeps for them. They remember every meal, and they remember every name they have been given.
Habitat
Vampires live in The Sanguine Crypts, a crypt of pale stone where the ledger is the only honest promise. They need three things: a crypt old enough to hold the ledger, a blood-debt wide enough to feed the lord, and a stranger who is worth the name. They are settled in crypts around the sanguine-rings, with ledger-lines across the mapped current; a vampire who has not kept a ledger in a season is called "the one who forgot the crypt."
Appearance
The vampire silhouette is the tall, narrow, pale shape — heavy through the jaw and shoulder, with the head sitting a little too high on the body, like a word that is waiting for a name. Males stand 1.68 m to 1.83 m, pale and heavy through the jaw and shoulder, with a low, barked voice; they are the lords, the first bite, and the ones who stand in the crypt and do not move. Females stand 1.68 m, leaner and quicker, with a thinner hide and a longer memory; they are the brides, the ones whose blood is the ledger, and the ones whose nod is the crypt. A vampire female does not avert her gaze. A vampire female does not need to — the crypt answers for her. The base skin is a pale grey-white, the color of old crypt-stone seen through a dark glass, with a faint pattern of deeper, sea-black patches along the cheek and a clean, deliberate bone-white at the lip and the fang-tip that is the vampire line's most persistent claim. The eyes are a pale, washed-out crypt-white, large for the head, with a slow, deliberate blink and a depth that makes them look like they are reading the ledger — and in most cases, they are, and the reading is the point. The head is the mark: a long, narrow skull with a jaw of fangs in bone-white, long, hollow, always wet, and always pointed at something, which is the vampire line's most persistent claim. Males carry the line in the jaw and the bite; females in the blood and the memory. Elders are marked by a skin gone a deep, dull crypt-slate and a fang gone pale silver — an old vampire bites slower and holds the ledger longer. They do not age, but they can be killed, and they do not like being reminded of it. They eat the crypt: the blood, the name, the debt, and the ledger that keeps the promise honest. Everyday wear: a wrap of woven crypt-silk at the waist, a single blood-bone bead at the throat, and no armor, because the ledger is the armor and the crypt is the home.
Behavior
Disposition: feudal, clannish, territorial, honor-bound. In peace, vampires are watchful, deliberate, and absolutely certain of the crypt — they have the ledger, and they let the surface know it. In war they fight as the ledger fights: the bite first, the word second, the patient, precise holding of the debt third. Strangers on the surface are either a meal or a mistake, and the mistake is the one the crypt remembers. The social unit is the crypt, 10–30 strong, around the sanguine-rings — no crypt follows a lord, it follows the ledger-keeper whose debt is truest. Two signature quirks: a vampire who is being lied to will not call it out — they will simply keep the ledger for the lie and wait, because the keeping is the point. And they keep the name for a lifetime: a name the crypt has kept is a debt, and the debt is paid in blood.
Warfare & Markings
Tactics: the ambush of the ledger — the vampire line does not fight in the open current; it fights as the crypt fights, with the bite, the word, and the long, deliberate patience of the one who has already kept the debt. Armor: none, by choice — the ledger is the armor, and a vampire who wears metal has already decided the crypt is not enough. Weapons: the fang, the claw that is not a weapon but is used like one, and the debt that is not a weapon but is used like one. War markings: the Ledger-Notch, a deliberate chip in the left fang for every ledger kept, worn as a record of the long crypt; the Crypt-Knot, a single knot in the hair for every crypt oath kept, in sea-black; and the Name-Brand, a small, deliberate mark on the inner wrist — the first name the wearer ever kept, worn as a mark of the beginning. Post-battle: the dead are carried to the crypt, their names spoken over the ledger, and their fangs laid across the threshold — a vampire buried without their ledger is buried as a surface.
Magic Alignment
Primary domain: necromancy — vampire magic is the will, the blood, the patient, precise shaping of the crypt across the sanguine-rings. Secondaries: enchantment and illusion. Named inborns: Crypt-Sense (a vampire can feel the debt's mood a day before it is broken, and the feeling is not a choice), Blood-Sight (a vampire sees in the dark the way a human sees in the light, and the seeing is not a choice), Name-Carry (a vampire's word carries across the crypt, and the carrying is not a choice). Signature power: the Lord's Word — a vampire can speak a word in the crypt tongue and let it land on a fang, and the fang will keep the word until the debt is done. Limitation: vampire magic is spent on the crypt; a vampire who has spent their lord's word must sit in the dry dark for one day, and the day is the worst one of the crypt.
Religion
Vampires keep Khorvane, the Endless Hunger as their primary god — the death, the hunger, the ripening that is the crypt’s own law. The crypt is Khorvane’s orchard, and the vampire is the orchard’s fruit. Priestly class: the Cult-of-the-Vine, who keeps the crypt-temple and offers the name at every rite. Heresy is not blasphemy — it is a promise broken in the crypt, and there is no rite for that one; the crypt simply stops ripening with the breaker.
Society
Crypts of 10–30, led by the Ledger-Keeper, rank decided by the ledger — whose debt is truest.
Home
They live in The Sanguine Crypts, a crypt of pale stone where the ledger is the only honest promise.
Relations
The "the ledger is the only honest promise" faction — crypt neighbors whose blood is a price, and the ones whose nod is the debt. The Revenants of the gate are the kin the crypt keeps at a distance — the revenant keeps the soul and the vampire keeps the name, and the two have learned that a soul that is not sworn is a soul that is not a debt, and the not-swearing is the whole of the peace. The Skeletons of the bone fields are the small kin the ledger tolerates — the skeleton keeps the bone and the vampire keeps the crypt, and the two are the same dead seen from two gates, so a name that a skeleton has kept is a name the vampire will keep, and the keeping is the whole of the treaty. The Wraiths of the moor are the ones the ledger tests most often — the wraith keeps the shade and the vampire keeps the blood, and the wraith who has been bled is the wraith the crypt has already decided is a meal, and the deciding is the whole of the law. The Liches of the crypts are the neighbors the ledger does not fight — the lich keeps the crypt and the vampire keeps the name, and the two have learned that a crypt that is not bled is a crypt that is not a promise, and the not-bleeding is the whole of the distance. Above, the ground-folk of The Forgotten are the ones the crypt tests most often, and the testing is the whole of the bond, because the forgotten are the ones the ledger keeps the debt for, and the keeping is the whole of the promise. Uaellaen keeps a page of the crypt in the wiki — the ledger, the debt, the nod that is the meal — and the keeping is the whole of the record, because the camp has learned that a vampire who has been written about is a vampire who has been bled with, and the bleeding-with is the whole of the welcome.
In the Story
In the current story, the vampires are the ledger in the crypt — the name Uaellaen writes about when the debt is the law. The Forgotten keep their distance at the crypt line, and the distance has held for two seasons. This season a name came up from the crypt that is not in the ledger — a name the Ledger-Keeper does not remember, and the not-remembering is the whole of the warning, because the crypt keeps its ledger, and the ledger has started to bleed itself. The bleeding is the hand the camp has not been shown.
"You stand in our crypt and you make a sound. Good. Now we know where you are, and you have made our ledger's choice for us. The price is a name. You have one to give, or you are already a meal." — Ledger-Keeper Vessa the Pale
