Overview
The Name-Carry Vampire is the lean, quick shape of the debt-line — thin through the jaw, long through the fang, the head a little high on the body, and the whole of it reading as one low line from crown to toe, built to move where the debt-line runs and to spend a bite the size of a whisper. It is the second of the Vampires a stranger meets in The Sanguine Crypts, and the one the crypt keeps for the part of the crypt the Ledger-Sense vampire will not cross.
Habitat
The Name-Carry Vampire keeps the deep ground of The Sanguine Crypts, the chambers below the debt-wall where the blood-light runs old and the phosphorescence is thinnest. It needs three things: a crypt old enough to hold the carry, a debt-line long enough to spend the bite, and a name that is being kept by the Ledger-Sense line. The young vampires are set into the deep chambers, where the dark is oldest, and they learn to carry before they learn to stand, because the carry is the only mother the crypt has.
Appearance
The silhouette is the lean, quick line — thin through the jaw, the fang long, the head a little high on the body, the whole of it built to slip between the debt-lines. Males stand 1.78 m, lean through the jaw, with the fang longer than the mortal ideal; females stand 1.65 m, quicker still, with a longer memory of the ledger. The hide is a pale bone-cream fading to true black at the trailing shoulder, the black of the deep crypt, with a red-rim at the lip and the carry-mark a wash of sea-black at the throat, the sea-black being the debt made hide, and the depth of the sea-black is the length of the carry.
Behaviour
The Name-Carry Vampire moves fast and certain, 9 m/s along the debt-line, and it does not make a sound the dark cannot carry. It reads the crypt before it moves in it: the shape of a debt by the blood it stirs, the cold of a stranger by the air that goes wrong around them, the fall of a name that has been spoken and not kept, all of it arriving before the step is made. It is patient in a different way from the Ledger-Sense vampire, patient in the way a held bite is patient, and it will hold a debt in the crypt for hours before spending the bite, because a bite spent in the crypt is a bite no one can see being spent.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The weapon is the carry, and the carry is the promise: the Name-Carry vampire holds one debt, and the debt does not come back until the carry is spent, and the bite is the last word of the crypt. The second weapon is the fang, because the debt is not always the bite, and the fang that is a little too long for the jaw is the word the carry is too quiet for.
Magic Alignment
The Name-Carry Vampire stands in the service of Omnath, the Last Memory, the deity of the last remembering, and its magic is the carrying of the debt — the power to make the debt into a thing the hide holds and the holding into a bite. Name-Carry is the primary gift: the debt carried across the crypt, the bite spent on the stranger, and the sea-black at the throat that is the debt made hide, because the sea-black is the carry made visible, and a deep sea-black is a long carry.
Society
A Name-Carry Vampire walks in a deep chamber of four to eight, and the deep chamber is led by the one who has carried the longest debt, because the deep chamber is the only ground in the world where the carrying is the law. The hierarchy is by the length of the carry: the one whose debt goes farthest eats the blood-debt first, and the one whose sea-black is deepest keeps the bite-mouth. The young vampires share the debt-line and share the carry, and the carry is the only school the crypt has, and the school is the crypt, and the crypt does not grade, the crypt only carries.
Culture & Lore
The Name-Carry Vampire keeps its lore in the carry, and the carry keeps it better than the ledger does, because the carry is the only book in the world that gets longer when someone bites. The old vampires say the first Name-Carry vampire was a debt that learned to stand, and the crypt gave it a body because the crypt had no other way to keep the carrying. They call the strays the carry takes "the ones who were worth the debt," and they keep the best of the bite-mouths — the sea-black of the ones who were quiet enough to be a carry — in the crypt, which is the finest teaching in the line.
Home
Its home is The Sanguine Crypts, the part of it that is below the debt-wall and older than the standing. The Name-Carry Vampire is the crypt's second voice, and the voice is quiet in the way the deep is quiet, and the quiet is the one thing the crypt cannot lose, because the ledger needs the carry the way the blood needs the debt. The debt-lines are kept quiet by the young, the deep chambers are kept old by the line, and the dead are kept where the bite fell, which is the one law the deep does not break.
Relations
The Name-Carry Vampire keeps a quiet, debt-kept peace with the Ledger-Sense line of The Sanguine Crypts, a peace of the carried debt and the kept ledger that has held since the first stranger fell. To Omnath, the Last Memory, the Name-Carry line is the first remembering made quick, and the line keeps a single true black scale at the bite-mouth for the god, which is the one offering the god has asked for and never taken, and the asking is the keeping.
In the Story
In the story of the six who arrived, the Name-Carry Vampire is the second pale test the crypt offers, the carry that asks which of them the bite will keep and which of them the bite must spend. It is the figure that carries the debt while the oaths are made above the ground, and the figure whose carrying is the map the war is bled by, because the crypt has heard every name the warrens have made, and the crypt has carried them, and the crypt is the one page in the world the war cannot set down.
