Overview
The Crypt-Sense Vampire is the tall, narrow, pale shape — heavy through the jaw and shoulder, the head sitting a little too high on the body, like a word that is waiting for a name, and the whole of it reading as one line from crown to toe that is a debt, and the debt is the word the crypt keeps for it. It is the first of the Vampires a stranger meets in The Sanguine Crypts, and the one the crypt keeps for the debt no one else is true enough to hold. Where the other vampires of the crypt are the bite, the Crypt-Sense vampire is the standing behind the bite: the crypt speaks to it, and it answers with the ledger.
Habitat
The Crypt-Sense Vampire keeps the old ground of The Sanguine Crypts, a crypt of pale stone where the ledger is the only honest promise. It needs three things: a crypt old enough to hold the ledger, a blood-debt wide enough to feed the lord, and a stranger who is worth the name. The crypt-clans are led by the Ledger-Keeper, and the Crypt-Sense line is the line the Ledger-Keeper reads first, because the line knows every debt in the crypt, and the knowing is the ledger, and the ledger is the point.
Appearance
Males stand 1.83 m, pale and heavy through the jaw and shoulder, with a low, barked voice that is the crypt's first bite; females stand 1.68 m, leaner and quicker, with a thinner hide and a longer memory, and a vampire female does not avert her gaze, because the crypt answers for her. The hide is a pale bone-cream with a deep sea-black at the throat and a red-rim at the lip, the fang a clean ivory, the ivory being the ledger made tooth, and the depth of the ivory is the truth of the blood.
Behaviour
The Crypt-Sense Vampire does not move first; it stands, and the standing is the ledger, and the ledger is the behaviour. It moves 7 m/s across the crypt-chamber, deliberate and certain, and it does not hurry, because the debt is the only thing in the crypt that is worth the hurry, and the debt is never in a hurry. It reads the crypt before it moves in it: the shape of a debt by the blood it stirs, the cold of a stranger by the air that goes wrong around them, the fall of a name that has been spoken and not kept, all of it arriving before the step is made, and the arrival is the ledger.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The weapon is the bite, and the bite is the promise: the Crypt-Sense vampire remembers every bite, and the bite does not come back until the ledger is kept, and the nod that is the debt is the last word of the crypt. The second weapon is the fang, because the bite is not always the word, and the fang that is a little too long for the jaw is the word the bite is too patient for. The defense is the ledger, because the pale hide takes a blow the way the crypt-stone takes the word, and the jaw is the one part of the body that has been hit the most, and the jaw is the part that has never given.
Magic Alignment
The Crypt-Sense Vampire stands in the service of Omnath, the Last Memory, the deity of the last remembering, and its magic is the keeping of the debt — the power to make the blood into a promise and the promise into a debt. Crypt-Sense is the primary gift: the hide reads the crypt, every debt in it, kept and known, and the knowing is the ledger, and the ledger is the point. The secondary gift is the Blood-Sight of the Vampires, and in the Crypt-Sense line the sight is the blood-light of the eye, and the light is the one thing the dark of the crypt has never taken.
Society
A Crypt-Sense Vampire stands in a crypt-clan of four to a dozen, and the crypt-clan is run by the Ledger-Keeper, the one whose blood is truest, because the crypt-clan is the only ground in the world where the truth is the law. The hierarchy is by the depth of the ledger: the one whose ledger holds longest eats the blood-debt first, and the one whose blood is truest keeps the debt-wall. The young vampires share the debt-line and share the standing, and the standing is the only school the crypt has, and the school is the crypt, and the crypt does not grade, the crypt only keeps.
Culture & Lore
The Crypt-Sense Vampire keeps its lore in the ledger, and the ledger keeps it better than the bite does, because the ledger is the only book in the world that gets longer when someone dies. The old vampires say the first Crypt-Sense vampire was a debt that learned to stand, and the crypt gave it a body because the crypt had no other way to keep the ledger. They call the strangers who cross the debt-line "the ones who were worth the name," and they keep the best of the debt-walls — the ivory of the ones who were true enough to be a ledger — in the crypt, which is the finest teaching in the line.
Home
Its home is The Sanguine Crypts, a crypt of pale stone, its chambers lit by the phosphorescence of the blood, its silence broken only by the ledger and the debt. The Crypt-Sense Vampire is the crypt's first voice, and the crypt is the vampire's first debt, and the two of them keep each other the way a ledger keeps a name. The blood-debt is kept by the Ledger-Keeper, the debt-lines are kept true by the young, and the dead are kept where they fell, which is the one law the crypt does not break.
Relations
The Crypt-Sense Vampire keeps a cold, true peace with the rest of the Vampires of The Sanguine Crypts, a peace of kept debts that has held as long as the crypt has been standing. To Omnath, the Last Memory, the Crypt-Sense line is the first remembering made blood, and the line keeps a single ivory fang at the debt-wall for the god, which is the one offering the god has asked for and never taken, and the asking is the keeping.
In the Story
In the story of the six who arrived, the Crypt-Sense Vampire is the first pale test the crypt offers, the ledger that asks which of them the blood will keep and which of them the blood will spend. It is the figure that keeps the debt-line while the oaths are made on the ground, and the figure whose ledger is the map the war is kept by, because the crypt has read every approach the warrens have taken, and the crypt has kept them, and the crypt is the one page in the world the war cannot break.
