Wet-Sight Slime

The low, small, wet shape of the dripping cavern, the one that sees in the dark the way a human sees in the light. Its green runs clear and deliberate, its lower surface is a deep sea-black, and the bone-white edge is the cleanest line in the ring.

Overview

The Wet-Sight Slime is the low, small, wet shape — heavy through the surface, with no head at all, only a slow, deliberate rise and fall, like a word that is waiting for the dark to say it back. It is the truest eye of the slime line: the drifter that sees in the dark the way a human sees in the light, and the seeing is not a choice. There is no brain in it and no hunger but the one, but the seeing arrives anyway, and the seeing is not a choice. Where the other drips of the cavern move by the mood, the Wet-Sight moves by the picture. The picture is the whole of its law, and the law is the whole of its drip.

Habitat

It lives in Drip Caverns, in the deep dark of the ring where the ceiling's green shimmer does not reach and the drip is the only light there is. It keeps the dark side of the ring, because that is where the seeing earns its keep, and because a drifter that hunts in the light is a drifter that has wasted its edge. The engulfer pools of the open water hunt by the meal and the splitters grow by the division, but the Wet-Sight keeps the dark and does not divide. It is settled in the cavern, and the settling is the whole of the territory, because the dark does not leave the drip.

Appearance

The silhouette is the low, small, wet shape — heavy through the surface, with no head at all, only a slow, deliberate rise and fall. A Wet-Sight drifter reads 89 cm from crest to surface and carries 44 kg of gel, its base a faintly green, the color of old drip-water seen through a bright glass, with a clear, deliberate sheen over it that the other drips do not have. Along the lower surface run patches of deep sea-black, and the leading edge holds a clean, deliberate bone-white that is the line's most persistent claim — the cleanest line in the ring, because the seeing keeps the edge true.

Behaviour

It moves at 1.4 m/s across the wet floor, deliberate, because the dark does the waiting and the drifter has nothing to do but see. It absorbs by the surface, not the mouth — the gel spreads, the stone softens, and the meal is taken the way a picture is taken, edge first. When the picture arrives — the meal, the intruder, the split — the bone-white edge runs ahead of the body and the drifter follows it the way a sentence follows its first word.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The body is the whole of the weapon — a surface of acid that eats the soft stone by the surface and the flesh by the same slow, patient edge. There is no strike and no bite; the drifter simply arrives, and the arriving is the whole of the attack. Its defense is the same surface and the same seeing: the gel is translucent and faintly green, the sea-black patches read as shadow, and the drifter itself does not arrive until the picture says it may. The bone-white edge is the one honest warning, and the cavern's other tenants have learned to read it the way they read the drip.

Magic Alignment

Its line belongs to transmutation, the patient, precise shaping of the cavern across the drip-rings. The Wet-Sight carries the line's truest named inborn, Wet-Sight — it senses in the dark the way a human sees in the light, and the sensing is not a choice. It also carries Drip-Sense, the line's hunger-feeling, which is not a choice either, because a drifter that could not feel the meal would not be a drifter. Its signature power is the Drop's Word: a word pressed into the surface of the drip and let land on a stone, and the stone keeps the word until the meal is done.

Society

There is no society in it, and the not-having is the whole of the shape. The drips of the ring move in parallel the way rain moves — each one its own word, all of them the same sentence. The Wet-Sight drifter is the one the ring trusts to lead the parallel, because a line that sees in the dark is a line that does not lose its edge. The engulfer pools keep the open water and the drifter keeps the ring, and the two have learned that a drip that is not dripped is a drip that is not a conversation, and the not-dripping is the whole of the peace.

Culture & Lore

The drip is the only honest conversation the cavern has ever trusted, and the lore of the line is the drip. A drifter that sees the meal before the feeling arrives is a drifter that has read the dark, and the reading is the whole of its reputation. The bone-white edge is the mark the line keeps — the clean, deliberate claim that the surface will arrive — and a Wet-Sight whose edge runs true is a drifter the ring will trust with the dark. The Leech Folk of the pits are the small kin the drip tolerates, and the tolerating is the whole of the distance, because the leech keeps the pit and the slime keeps the stone.

Home

It lives in Drip Caverns, a dripping cavern of acid wanderers, its ceiling a constant green shimmer, its floor dissolving and re-forming, its silence broken only by the drip. The drifter keeps the dark side of the ring, and the ring is the whole of its home, because the home is the drip and the drip is the home. The Frogloks of the shallows do not come down, and the not-coming is the whole of the peace. The cavern gives the line its color, its patience, its one honest conversation, and its one true eye, and the line keeps all four the way it keeps the word — until the meal is done.

Relations

The Oozes of the melt pool are the big kin the drip keeps at a distance — the ooze keeps the melt and the slime keeps the drip, and the two have learned that a melt that is not dripped is a melt that is not a conversation, and the not-dripping is the whole of the peace. The Leech Folk are the small kin the drip tolerates, because the leech keeps the pit and the slime keeps the stone, and the two are the same soft seen from two directions. The Frogloks of the shallows and the Deep Ones of the dark water are the neighbors the drip regards from the ring, and the regarding is the whole of the distance.

In the Story

The six who arrived through the The Threshold never came down to the drip-ring, but the dark has been different since the oaths were sworn above, and the ring's drips have been seeing things a day before they happen. The Wet-Sight keeps the picture the dark is keeping, and the picture is the whole of the story's edge. When the meal comes that the dark has already seen, the bone-white edge will run ahead of it, and the cavern will read the warning the way it has always read the drip.
