Overview
The Drip-Sense Slime is the low, small, wet shape — heavy through the surface, with no head at all, only a slow, deliberate rise and fall, like a word that is waiting for a meal. It is the first, truest voice of the slime line: the drifter that feels the meal a day before it happens, the way the whole cavern feels the ceiling. There is no brain in it and no hunger but the one, but the feeling arrives anyway, and the feeling is not a choice. Where the other drips of the cavern hunt by the dark, the Drip-Sense hunts by the mood. The mood is the whole of its law, and the law is the whole of its drip.
Habitat
It lives in Drip Caverns, in the low ring where the ceiling's green shimmer falls thickest and the floor is still dissolving and re-forming. It keeps the drip-ring, because that is where the mood of the meal is easiest to feel, and because a drifter that leaves the ring is a drifter that has forgotten the drip. The engulfer pools of the deeper dark hunt in parallel and the splitters grow by the meal, but the Drip-Sense keeps the ring and does not divide. It is settled in the cavern, and the settling is the whole of the territory, because the drip does not leave the drip.
Appearance
The silhouette is the low, small, wet shape — heavy through the surface, with no head at all, only a slow, deliberate rise and fall. A Drip-Sense drifter reads 91 cm from crest to surface and carries 45 kg of gel, its base a faintly green, the color of old drip-water seen through a bright glass. Along the lower surface run patches of deep sea-black, and the leading edge holds a clean, deliberate bone-white that is the line's most persistent claim. A Drip-Sense about to split is a drifter whose green has gone dull and whose bone-white edge runs wide, and the dulling is the whole of the warning.
Behaviour
It moves at 1.2 m/s across the wet floor, deliberate, because the drip does the waiting and the drifter has nothing to do but feel. It absorbs by the surface, not the mouth — the gel spreads, the stone softens, and the meal is taken the way a word is taken, letter by letter. When the feeling arrives — a day before the meal, never a moment after — the bone-white edge runs ahead of the body and the drifter follows it like a sentence follows its first word.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The body is the whole of the weapon — a surface of acid that eats the soft stone by the surface and the flesh by the same slow, patient letter. There is no strike and no bite; the drifter simply arrives, and the arriving is the whole of the attack. Its defense is the same surface: the gel is translucent and faintly green, which makes it easy to miss in the cavern's dim shimmer, and the sea-black patches along the lower surface make it read as a shadow that has decided to eat. The bone-white edge is the one honest warning, and the cavern's other tenants have learned to read it the way they read the drip.
Magic Alignment
Its line belongs to transmutation, the patient, precise shaping of the cavern across the drip-rings. The Drip-Sense carries the line's first named inborn, Drip-Sense — it feels the meal a day before it eats, and the feeling is not a choice. It also carries Wet-Sight, the line's dark-seeing, which is not a choice either, because a drifter that could not see in the dark would not be a drifter. Its signature power is the Drop's Word: a word pressed into the surface of the drip and let land on a stone, and the stone keeps the word until the meal is done.
Society
There is no society in it, and the not-having is the whole of the shape. The drips of the ring move in parallel the way rain moves — each one its own word, all of them the same sentence. The engulfer pools keep the deep dark and the drifter keeps the ring, and the two have learned that a drip that is not dripped is a drip that is not a conversation, and the not-dripping is the whole of the peace. The splitters divide by the meal and the divisions keep the same green, the same sea-black, the same bone-white, because a slime that changed its color would be a slime that had changed its law.
Culture & Lore
The drip is the only honest conversation the cavern has ever trusted, and the lore of the line is the drip. A drifter that feels a meal a day early is a drifter that has heard the ceiling, and the hearing is the whole of its reputation. The bone-white edge is the mark the line keeps — the clean, deliberate claim that the surface will arrive — and a drifter whose edge runs dull is a drifter the ring will not trust to keep the word. The Leech Folk of the pits are the small kin the drip tolerates, and the tolerating is the whole of the distance, because the leech keeps the pit and the slime keeps the stone.
Home
It lives in Drip Caverns, a dripping cavern of acid wanderers, its ceiling a constant green shimmer, its floor dissolving and re-forming, its silence broken only by the drip. The drifter keeps the ring where the shimmer falls, and the ring is the whole of its home, because the home is the drip and the drip is the home. The Frogloks of the shallows do not come down, and the not-coming is the whole of the peace. The cavern gives the line its color, its patience, and its one honest conversation, and the line keeps all three the way it keeps the word — until the meal is done.
Relations
The Oozes of the melt pool are the big kin the drip keeps at a distance — the ooze keeps the melt and the slime keeps the drip, and the two have learned that a melt that is not dripped is a melt that is not a conversation, and the not-dripping is the whole of the peace. The Leech Folk are the small kin the drip tolerates, because the leech keeps the pit and the slime keeps the stone, and the two are the same soft seen from two directions. The Frogloks of the shallows and the Deep Ones of the dark water are the neighbors the drip regards from the ring, and the regarding is the whole of the distance.
In the Story
The six who arrived through the The Threshold never came down to the drip-ring, but the drip has been louder since the oaths were sworn above, and the ring's drips have been splitting a day earlier than they should. The Drip-Sense keeps the word the stone is keeping, and the word is the whole of the story's edge. When the meal comes that the ceiling has already felt, the bone-white edge will run ahead of it, and the cavern will read the warning the way it has always read the drip.
