Creature

Current-Sense Merfolk

A scaled, finned reef-kin of the living coral city who feels the current and keeps the deep spires, the throne's social, clannish, and most certain fin.

Overview

The Current-Sense Merfolk is the social, certain fin of the Coral Throne, a scaled, finned reef-kin of the living coral city who feels the current and keeps the deep spires, the throne's social, clannish, and most certain fin. It stands just over two meters long, watchful and patient, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in kept currents rather than years. Where the dregmaw of the warrens keep the feed, the Current-Sense merfolk of the throne feel the current, and they have been feeling the first current in the first spire for a very long time.

Habitat

The Current-Sense Merfolk keeps to the deep spires of the Coral Throne, a range of living coral where the throne is a promise and the trade is a treaty. Its dwellings are chambers of coral architecture, grown rather than built, their walls cool and lit by the phosphorescence of the reef, their faces catching the blue-green shimmer of the coral on the inside and the shelter of the spire on the outside. It favors the deeper spires where the current runs oldest and the feeling is oldest, the places where a trade can be kept without the throne's own motion breaking it.

Appearance

A Current-Sense Merfolk is about 2.13 m long, sleek and watchful, with blue-green coral scale that reads as living in the blue-green reef-light. Its brow carries the pearl-white ridge, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the feeling, and its belly is deep-sea teal, the color of the reef's own glow at the deep. Its eyes are pale blue-green, bright and certain beneath the ridge, and they hold still in a way that no other eye in the throne does. It wears a wrap of kelp and scale in muted blue and green and carries a single pearl at its belt, set with a single current-loop at the brow, the loop of a keeper.

Behaviour

The Current-Sense Merfolk is social, clannish, and profoundly certain, a creature of long currents and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It feels before it acts, often for hours, feeling on a spire or a person or a trade until it understands the shape of the current, and only then does it act, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by a Current-Sense merfolk is a debt the throne will keep long after the keeper has gone.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The Current-Sense merfolk is no open-sea fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the current and the reef itself, not force. Its primary defense is the reef, for it knows every corner of the deep spires and can lead a pursuer through the Coral Throne until the pursuit loses its nerve and its footing on the coral. Should it be forced to act, a Current-Sense merfolk is precise and patient, 6 m/s through the reef currents and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, cutting a fin, dimming a light, or holding a chamber until the threat is spent.

Magic Alignment

The Current-Sense merfolk is attuned to the long word of the pearl, for the pearl word is the feeling and the feeling is the whole of its power, and a merfolk that has a throne and a scale and a current does not need a spell that is not its own. It is not attuned to any art that is not the pearl, and it is not bound by any word that is not its own, and the not being bound is the whole of its way of being free. Its one signature thing is the pearl word, which is not a magic but is a thing that the merfolk of the throne have spoken for a very long time, and the pearl word is the current, and the current is the whole of its power.

Society

The Current-Sense Merfolk live in the Coral Throne in social, clannish spires of forty to a hundred and fifty, bound by the currents they keep together rather than by blood or by place, and the eldest keeper among them is honored as the Pearl-Keeper. There is no elder and no ruler beyond the Pearl-Keeper, for a merfolk that has felt the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a current and the current is the whole of their society.

Culture & Lore

The culture of the Current-Sense Merfolk is a culture of the kept current, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is social and clannish is the only honest word in the throne. They keep no records, for a merfolk that has kept a current does not need a record, the feeling is the record, and the feeling is social and clannish and does not fade. Their stories are slow and patient, told at the trade at the low current, and they are stories of currents kept and trades felt and the social, clannish difference between them, told in a voice that is finned and means every feeling.

Home

The Coral Throne is the Current-Sense merfolk's home and its feeling, a range of living coral where the throne is a promise and the trade is a treaty, where the merfolk keep their currents and their social, clannish words. It is a strange and patient place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Current-Sense merfolk has learned to live inside that coral rather than against it. The blue-green shimmer of the coral that runs up through the deep spires is the throne's own, a cold glow that the merfolk have come to read as the color of a kept current.

Relations

The Current-Sense Merfolk keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of the Coral Throne, a truce of kept currents that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the coral. To the blue-green shimmer of the deep spires the Current-Sense merfolk is a social, clannish, and absolutely certain presence, a blue-green-eyed keeper that is at home in the chambers and in the trade, and the shimmer has learned to glow wide and let the feelings pass, for a merfolk that has kept you has decided you are a promise and not a lesson.

In the Story

In the story of the throne, the Current-Sense Merfolk is the social, clannish edge of the tale, the place where the currents are kept and a trade is felt and a feeling is read. It is the figure that keeps a new current at the low water and holds the throne very social and very certain, and the figure that, when the truce with the pearl-carrying merfolk grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old current social and clannish and absolutely certain.
