Overview
The Roost-Sense Cockatrice is the territorial, certain hiss of The Hissing Roost, a crested, serpent-tailed fowl of the bare cliff roost who senses the roost and keeps the hundred-egg nest, the roost's territorial, aggressive, and most certain hiss. It stands just under 2.44 m tall, crested and patient, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in kept eggs rather than years. Where the Clutch-Keeper keeps the nest, the Roost-Sense cockatrice of the roost senses the hiss itself, and it has been sensing the first hiss on the first ring for a very long time.
Habitat
The Roost-Sense Cockatrice keeps to the hissing-rings of The Hissing Roost, a nest of a hundred eggs in a bare cliff-face where the silence is broken only by the hiss and the clutch. Its dwellings are hollows of bare stone and kept egg, their floors dissolving and re-forming with the drip, their faces catching the red shimmer of the roost on the inside and the shelter of the stone on the outside. It favors the middle rings where the hiss runs oldest and the sensing is oldest, the places where a hiss can be sensed without the roost's own motion breaking it.
Appearance
A Roost-Sense Cockatrice is about 2.44 m tall, crested and patient, with wet red-gold plumage that reads as cold in the red roost-light. Its wings carry the sea-black wing-bands, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the sensing, and its tail ends in the ivory tail-scale of the roost, the color of the roost's own stone at low hiss. Its eyes are washed-out roost-white, bright and certain beneath the brow, and they hold still in a way that no other eye on the roost does — they are reading the hiss.
Behaviour
The Roost-Sense Cockatrice is territorial, aggressive, and profoundly pack, a creature of long hisses and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It senses before it acts, often for hours, sensing on a ring or a stranger or a hiss until it understands the shape of the clutch, and only then does it act, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by a Roost-Sense cockatrice is a debt the roost will keep long after the sensor has gone.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The Roost-Sense cockatrice is no open-sky fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the sense and the roost itself, not force. Its primary defense is the roost, for it knows every hollow of the hissing-rings and can lead a pursuer along The Hissing Roost until the pursuit loses its nerve and its footing in the bare stone. Should it be forced to act, a Roost-Sense cockatrice is precise and patient, 7 m/s off the cliff-face and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, dimming a light, holding a ring, or sensing until the threat is spent.
Magic Alignment
The Roost-Sense cockatrice is attuned to the long word of the roost, for the word is the sensing and the sensing is the whole of its power, and a cockatrice that has a roost and a talon and a hiss does not need a spell that is not its own. Its primary domain is enchantment, and its named powers are the roost-sense, the egg-sight, and the clutch-carry, and it is not attuned to any art that is not the roost's own, and the not being attuned is the whole of its way of being free.
Society
The Roost-Sense Cockatrices keep to The Hissing Roost in territorial, aggressive roosts of ten to forty around the hissing-rings, bound by the hisses they sense rather than by blood or by place, led by the Clutch-Keeper. There is no elder beyond the Clutch-Keeper, for a cockatrice that has sensed the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a sense and the sense is the whole of their society.
Culture & Lore
The culture of the Roost-Sense Cockatrice is a culture of the kept hiss, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is territorial and aggressive is the only honest word on the roost. They keep no records, for a cockatrice that has sensed a hiss does not need a record, the sensing is the record, and the sensing is territorial and aggressive and does not fade. Their stories are slow and patient, told on the ring at the low hiss, and they are stories of hisses sensed and clutches kept and the territorial, aggressive difference between them, told in a voice that is hissing and means every sensing.
Home
The Hissing Roost is the Roost-Sense cockatrice's home and its sensing, a nest of a hundred eggs in a bare cliff-face where the silence is broken only by the hiss and the clutch, where the cockatrice senses its hisses and keeps its territorial, aggressive words. It is a strange and patient place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Roost-Sense cockatrice has learned to live on that roost rather than against it. The red shimmer of the roost that runs across the hissing-rings is the roost's own, a cold light that the cockatrice has come to read as the color of a kept hiss.
Relations
The Roost-Sense Cockatrice keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of The Hissing Roost, a truce of kept hisses that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the bare stone. To the red shimmer of the hissing-rings the Roost-Sense cockatrice is a territorial, aggressive, and absolutely pack presence, a washed-eyed sensor that is at home on the rings and on the hiss, and the shimmer has learned to glow wide and let the senses pass, for a cockatrice that has sensed you has decided you are a promise and not a lesson.
In the Story
In the story of the roost, the Roost-Sense Cockatrice is the territorial, aggressive edge of the tale, the place where the hisses are kept and a clutch is sensed and a sensing is read. It is the figure that senses a new hiss at the low drip and holds the roost very territorial and very aggressive, and the figure that, when the truce with the clutch-carrying cockatrice grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old sense territorial and aggressive and absolutely pack.
