Cockatrices

Crested, serpent-tailed fowl of the roost. A hundred eggs in a single nest, each one a threat. The mother decides which hatch.

Overview

Cockatrices are the crested fowl of the roost. A hundred eggs in a single nest, each one a threat, and the mother decides which hatch. They consider the clutch a promise the roost keeps for them.

Habitat

Cockatrices live in The Hissing Roost, a nest of a hundred eggs where the clutch is the only honest promise. They need three things: a roost high enough to hold the clutch, a small game wide enough to feed the nest, and a mother who has not decided yet. They are settled in roosts around the hissing-rings, with clutch-lines across the mapped roost; a cockatrice that has not kept a clutch in a season is called "the one who forgot the roost."

Appearance

The cockatrice silhouette is the crested, low, quick shape — heavy through the crest and talon, with the head sitting a little too high on the neck, like a word that is waiting for a threat. Males run 2.44 m from crown to tail-tip, 95 kg to 130 kg, heavy through the crest and talon, with a thick red-gold plumage and a low, barked voice; they are the guard, the first strike, and the ones who stand on the nest and do not move. Females run 2.13 m, 80 kg to 110 kg, leaner and quicker, with a thinner crest and a longer memory; they are the clutch-keepers, the ones who decide which eggs hatch, and the ones whose nod is the threat. The base plumage is a thick, wet red-gold, the color of old roost-stone seen through a bright glass, with a faint pattern of deeper, sea-black bands along the wing and a clean, deliberate bone-white at the talon-tip that is the cockatrice line's most persistent claim. The eyes are a pale, washed-out roost-white, large for the head, with a slow, deliberate blink and a depth that makes them look like they are reading the clutch — and in most cases, they are, and the reading is the point. The head is the mark: a long, narrow fowl-skull with a pair of true, hooked beaks in bone-white, and the crest, which is the cockatrice line's most persistent claim — long, spiked, always clean, and always pointed at something. The serpent-tail is the mark — long, hollow, always wet, and always pointed at something. Males carry the line in the crest and the talon; females in the egg and the memory. Elders are marked by a plumage gone a deep, dull roost-slate and a crest gone pale silver — an old cockatrice strikes slower and holds the clutch longer. They wear nothing, because the roost is the body and the clutch is the law.

Behavior

Disposition: territorial, aggressive, pack, cunning. In peace, a cockatrice is a creature of guard and strike — it does not trade, it does not talk, and it does not forget the roost. In war it fights as the roost fights: the guard first, the strike second, and the hiss the whole time. Strangers on the surface are either a meal or a mistake, and the mistake is the one the roost remembers. The social unit is the roost, 10–40 strong, around the hissing-rings — no roost follows a guard, it follows the clutch-keeper whose eggs hatch truest. Two signature quirks: a cockatrice that is being lied to will not call it out — they will simply mark the lie's egg and wait, because the marking is the point. And they keep the clutch for a lifetime: a clutch the roost has kept is a debt, and the debt is paid in hiss.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

Natural weapons: the talon, which closes on the size of a head and holds the way a fist holds; the beak, which closes on the size of a jaw and does not open; and the hiss, which is not a weapon but is used like one. Defenses: the plumage, which turns a blade the way a roost turns a light; the venom of the tail, which is a defense no surface has ever reached; and the clutch, which is a defense no negotiation has ever reached.

Magic Alignment

Primary domain: enchantment — cockatrice magic is the will, the clutch, the patient, precise shaping of the roost across the hissing-rings. Secondaries: illusion and wild. Named inborns: Roost-Sense (a cockatrice can feel the threat's mood a day before it arrives, and the feeling is not a choice), Egg-Sight (a cockatrice sees in the dark the way a human sees in the light, and the seeing is not a choice), Clutch-Carry (a cockatrice's clutch carries the roost's memory across the nest, and the carrying is not a choice). Signature power: the Keeper's Word — a cockatrice can speak a word in the roost tongue and let it land on an egg, and the egg will keep the word until the hatch is true. Limitation: cockatrice magic is spent on the roost; a cockatrice that has spent their keeper's word must sit in the dry dark for one day, and the day is the worst one of the roost.

Religion

Cockatrices keep Mordra, the Unraveler as their primary god — the chaos, the decay, the becoming that is the roost's own law. The roost is Mordra's, and the cockatrice is the roost's clutch-keeper. Priestly class: the Clutch-Keeper, who keeps the roost-temple and speaks the threat at every rite. Heresy is not blasphemy — it is a word broken in the roost, and there is no rite for that one; the roost simply stops keeping the clutch with the breaker.

Society

Roosts of 10–40, led by the Clutch-Keeper, rank decided by the clutch — whose eggs hatch truest. No roost follows a guard, it follows the clutch-keeper, and the keeper leads not by size but by the hatch: an egg that hatches true in the dark outranks an egg that hatches loud, because the roost measures truth in hatches, not in hisses. Outsiders on the nest are either a meal or a mistake, and the mistake is the one the roost remembers; a stranger who stands on the hissing-ring is not a guest, it is an egg, and the egg is the whole of the warning. Young are raised behind the hiss-veil, the low stone ring where the hiss is too weak to mark, and a young cockatrice who has not survived a full hatch of the keeper's eye does not keep a ring of its own. The one fact the surface keeps wrong: the roost does not hoard the clutch — it keeps it, and the keeping is the whole of the promise, and a stranger who is counted is a stranger who is owed, and the owing is the only kind the egg keeps.

Relations

The "the clutch is the only honest promise" faction — roost neighbors whose egg is a price, and the ones whose nod is the threat.

In the Story

In the current story, the cockatrices are the nest above the camp — the hundred eggs Uaellaen writes about when the roost is worth more than the ground. The Forgotten pass the hissing-ring without a sound, and the roost has counted the passage, and the counting has held for two seasons. This season an egg came down to the camp unhatched — an egg the mother had not marked, and the not-marking is the whole of the warning, because the clutch is the promise and the promise does not lie. The keeper has not hatched a clutch in a season, and the not-hatching is the map the camp has not been shown.

You stand on our nest and you make a sound. Good. Now we know where you are, and you have made our clutch's choice for us. The price is an egg. You have one to give, or you are already a threat. — Clutch-Keeper Sela the Red
