Overview
The Clutch-Carry Cockatrice is the territorial, certain wing of The Hissing Roost, a crested, serpent-tailed fowl of the bare cliff roost who carries the clutch and keeps the high rings, the roost's territorial, cunning, and most certain wing. It stands just under 2.36 m tall, crested and patient, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in kept clutches rather than years. Where the Roost-Sense cockatrice senses the hiss, the Clutch-Carry cockatrice of the roost carries the clutch, and it has been carrying the first clutch on the first ring for a very long time.
Habitat
The Clutch-Carry Cockatrice keeps to the high rings of The Hissing Roost, a nest of a hundred eggs in a bare cliff-face where the silence is broken only by the hiss and the clutch. Its dwellings are hollows of bare stone and kept egg, their floors dissolving and re-forming with the drip, their faces catching the red shimmer of the roost on the inside and the shelter of the stone on the outside. It favors the higher rings where the clutch runs widest and the carrying is widest, the places where a clutch can be carried without the roost's own motion breaking it.
Appearance
A Clutch-Carry Cockatrice is about 2.36 m tall, crested and patient, with wet red-gold plumage that reads as cold in the red roost-light. Its wings carry the sea-black wing-bands, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the carrying, and its tail ends in the ivory tail-scale of the roost, the color of the roost's own stone at low hiss. Its eyes are washed-out roost-white, bright and certain beneath the brow, and they hold still in a way that no other eye on the roost does — they are reading the clutch.
Behaviour
The Clutch-Carry Cockatrice is territorial, cunning, and profoundly aggressive, a creature of long clutches and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It waits before it carries, often for hours, waiting on a ring or a stranger or a clutch until it understands the shape of the egg, and only then does it carry, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by a Clutch-Carry cockatrice is a debt the roost will keep long after the carrier has gone.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The Clutch-Carry cockatrice is no open-sky fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the carry and the roost itself, not force. Its primary defense is the roost, for it knows every hollow of the high rings and can lead a pursuer along The Hissing Roost until the pursuit loses its nerve and its footing in the bare stone. Should it be forced to act, a Clutch-Carry cockatrice is quick and precise, 8 m/s off the cliff-face and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, dimming a light, holding a ring, or carrying until the threat is spent.
Magic Alignment
The Clutch-Carry cockatrice is attuned to the long word of the roost, for the word is the carrying and the carrying is the whole of its power, and a cockatrice that has a roost and a talon and a clutch does not need a spell that is not the roost's own, and the not being attuned is the whole of its way of being free.
Society
The Clutch-Carry Cockatrices keep to The Hissing Roost in territorial, cunning roosts of ten to forty around the high rings, bound by the clutches they carry rather than by blood or by place, led by the Clutch-Keeper. There is no elder beyond the Clutch-Keeper, for a cockatrice that has carried the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a carry and the carry is the whole of their society.
Culture & Lore
The culture of the Clutch-Carry Cockatrice is a culture of the kept clutch, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is territorial and cunning is the only honest word on the roost. They keep no records, for a cockatrice that has carried a clutch does not need a record, the carrying is the record, and the carrying is territorial and cunning and does not fade. Their stories are slow and quick, told on the ring at the low hiss, and they are stories of clutches carried and eggs kept and the territorial, cunning difference between them, told in a voice that is hissing and means every carrying.
Home
The Hissing Roost is the Clutch-Carry cockatrice's home and its carrying, a nest of a hundred eggs in a bare cliff-face where the silence is broken only by the hiss and the clutch, where the cockatrice carries its clutches and keeps its territorial, cunning words. It is a strange and quick place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Clutch-Carry cockatrice has learned to live on that roost rather than against it. The red shimmer of the roost that runs across the high rings is the roost's own, a cold light that the cockatrice has come to read as the color of a kept clutch.
Relations
The Clutch-Carry Cockatrice keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of The Hissing Roost, a truce of kept clutches that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the bare stone. To the red shimmer of the high rings the Clutch-Carry cockatrice is a territorial, cunning, and absolutely aggressive presence, a washed-eyed carrier that is at home on the rings and on the clutch, and the shimmer has learned to glow wide and let the carries pass, for a cockatrice that has carried you has decided you are a promise and not a lesson.
In the Story
In the story of the roost, the Clutch-Carry Cockatrice is the territorial, certain edge of the tale, the place where the clutches are kept and an egg is carried and a carrying is read. It is the figure that carries a new clutch at the low hiss and holds the roost very territorial and very cunning, and the figure that, when the truce with the roost-sensing cockatrice grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old carry territorial and very cunning and absolutely aggressive.
