Creature

Amber-Eye Fox Man

A red-amber, mask-marked forest kin of the amber woods who reads the amber-light and the faces in it, the hollow's cunning, social, and most certain eye.

Overview

The Amber-Eye Fox Man is the cunning, certain eye of Whispering Hollow, a red-amber, mask-marked forest kin of the amber woods who reads the amber-light and the faces in it, the hollow's cunning, social, and most certain eye. It stands little over a meter tall, watchful and quick, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in read faces rather than years. Where the Secret-Keep fox men keep the secret, the Amber-Eye fox men of the amber woods read the face, and they have been reading the first face in the first den for a very long time.

Habitat

The Amber-Eye Fox Man keeps to the deep-dens of Whispering Hollow, a range of soft, amber-lit ground where the leaf-litter is deep and the deals are a treaty. Its dwellings are dug into the faces of the deep-den walls, hollows of soft earth and laid root coaxed into a home that catches the warm amber-light on its inner face and the shelter of the hollow on its outer. It favors the older deep-dens where the amber-light runs brightest and the reading is oldest, the places where a face can be read without the hollow's own motion breaking it.

Appearance

An Amber-Eye Fox Man stands about 1.41 m tall, lean and quick, with deep red-amber, bone-white-tipped fur that reads as bright in the amber-light. Its cheek bears the silver mask-marking, the blood's smile, worn as a record of the long art of the reading, and its eyes are large, pale luminous amber, brighter and more certain than any other fox man's, the color of the amber-light's own glow at dusk. It wears a patchwork of leather and cloth in muted amber and deep brick and carries a single reading-stone at its belt, set with a single face-loop at the brow, the loop of a reader.

Behaviour

The Amber-Eye Fox Man is cunning, certain, and profoundly watchful, a creature of long readings and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It observes before it reads, often for hours, watching a deep-den or a person or a bargain until it understands the shape of the face, and only then does it read, and then with a certainty that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by an Amber-Eye fox man is a debt the hollow will keep long after the reader has gone.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The Amber-Eye fox man is no open-ground fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the face and the amber-light itself, not force. Its primary defense is the deep-den, for it knows every corner of the deep-dens and can lead a pursuer through Whispering Hollow for days until the pursuit loses its nerve and its balance. Should it be forced to act, an Amber-Eye fox man is low and precise, 6 m/s over the leaf-litter and quick, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, cutting a root, dimming a light, or reading a face until the threat is spent.

Magic Alignment

The Amber-Eye fox man is attuned to the long word of the reading, for the reading is the deal and the deal is the whole of its power, and a fox man that has a face and a word and a hollow does not need a spell that is not its own. It is not attuned to any art that is not the reading, and it is not bound by any word that is not its own, and the not being bound is the whole of its way of being free. Its one signature thing is the reading, which is not a magic but is a thing that the fox men of the hollow have read for a very long time, and the reading is the deal, and the deal is the whole of its power.

Society

The Amber-Eye Fox Men live in Whispering Hollow in dens of fifteen to forty, bound by the faces they read together rather than by blood or by place. There is no elder and no ruler, for a fox man that has read the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a reading and the reading is the whole of their society. Decisions are made in the deep-den, by a company of amber-eyed readers that has already decided and is only agreeing, and once made they are kept, for a fox man that breaks a reading is a fox man that has broken the whole of what it is.

Culture & Lore

The culture of the Amber-Eye Fox Man is a culture of the read face, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is cunning and certain is the only honest word in the hollow. They keep no records, for a fox man that has read a face does not need a record, the reading is the record, and the reading is cunning and certain and does not fade. Their stories are slow and cunning, told in the deep-den at the dusk, and they are stories of faces read and smiles kept and the cunning, certain difference between them, told in a voice that is barked and means every reading.

Home

Whispering Hollow is the Amber-Eye fox man's home and its reading, a range of soft, amber-lit ground where the leaf-litter is deep and the deals are a treaty, where the fox men read their faces and their cunning, certain words. It is a strange and cunning place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Amber-Eye fox man has learned to live inside that hollow rather than against it. The warm amber-light that runs up through the deep-dens is the hollow's own, a soft red-amber glow that the fox men have come to read as the color of a read face.

Relations

The Amber-Eye Fox Man keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of Whispering Hollow, a truce of read faces that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the hollow. To the warm amber-light of the deep-dens the Amber-Eye fox man is a cunning, certain, and absolutely watchful presence, an amber-eyed reader that is at home in the deep-dens and in the leaf-litter, and the light has learned to glow wide and let the readings pass, for a fox man that has read you has decided you are a keeping and not a lesson.

In the Story

In the story of the hollow, the Amber-Eye Fox Man is the cunning, certain edge of the tale, the place where the faces are read and a face is traded and a deal is read. It is the figure that reads a new face in the dusk and holds the amber-light very cunning and very certain, and the figure that, when the truce with the secret-keeping fox men grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old face cunning and certain and absolutely watchful.
