Overview
Luminary is an ancient Light Dragon — a being of radiance, light, and holy magic. One of the oldest and most powerful dragons in existence, the most altruistic of the line. He does not claim the light; the light claims him, and the claiming is the point.
Habitat
He keeps his perch in Roostspire, a bare stone height at the edge of the planes, where the long, bright patience is the only law. He needs three things: a height high enough to see the dawn arrive, a silence deep enough to hold the old words, and a mortal worth the patience of the ages. He is settled, and he has been settled so long that the settling has become the identity.
Appearance
An ancient light-dragon of the first line, Luminary is massive and luminous — nine metres head to tail at the rest, more when the wings are spread, and the nine metres is the whole of the distance between the ground and the weather. His scales are the colour of pure white gold, shimmering with internal light, the color of a dawn seen through a clear glass, with a faint, deliberate pattern of deeper, pale-gold bands along the spine and the wing-membrane where the radiance gathers before the breath. The eyes are the mark: a pair of large, slow, deliberate points of pale, washed-out light-white, shining like twin dawns, with a depth that makes them look like they are reading the centuries — and in most cases, they are, and the reading is the point. The head is the tell: a long, narrow dragon-skull with a pair of true, hooked horns in bone-white, and a jaw that opens with the sound of a bell. The wings are the mark — broad, strong, always clean, casting blinding brilliance, the dragon line's most persistent claim. The age-marker is the frost: an ancient of the first line carries the years in the crest, a short, stiff comb of scales gone a deep, dull light-slate along the brow, and a back that has stopped trying to be a blade. He wears no armor and no wrap — the scale is the armor and the perch is the home, and the home is the whole of the line.
Warfare & Markings
How he fights: the Radiant Breath — a light-dragon of the first line does not fight; he is the light, and the light does not ask permission to shine. The breath is the named style, and the breath is the whole of the weapon, because a dragon who has drawn light since the stars were young does not spend the light, he remembers it. His presence can heal or blind — depending on his mood, and the mood is the whole of the measure. He carries no blade, because the claw is the blade and the wing is the shield and the word is the threshold. The marks he wears are not chosen — they are the record: a burn in the left wing-membrane from the last dark that tried the word on him, worn as the lesson; a scorch in the right scale-plate from the first fire he watched fall, worn as the beginning of the record. There is no post-battle — the light simply continues, and the record is counted.
Behaviour
Disposition: benevolent, wise, compassionate — in the way a dawn is benevolent. In peace, Luminary is deliberate, watchful, and absolutely incapable of being rushed — he has the ages, and he lets you know it. In conflict he fights as the light fights: the word first, the breath second, the patient, precise holding of the silence third. Strangers are met with a question about what they have made, and the answer decides whether the dragon offers the patience of the ages or the patience of the breath. He is the most altruistic of the dragons, often helping mortals in their time of need — the helping is not a choice, and the not-choosing is the point. Dragons are ancient beings who have seen civilizations rise and fall — they have little patience for mortal impatience but great appreciation for those who show respect for the ages. Two signature quirks: a Luminary who is being lied to will not call it out — he will simply ask a follow-up question that the liar cannot answer, and let the centuries do the work. And he speaks every language, and he will use the wrong one on purpose, in the tongue of the kingdom the listener forgot, just to see what happens. How he talks: slow, deliberate, with the weight of the ages — "Light is not just illumination. It is truth — and truth can heal or destroy, depending on who looks at it."
Magic Alignment
What he can actually do: Light Mastery (a dragon of the first line commands radiance, light, and holy magic with absolute control, and the commanding is not a choice); All Languages (Luminary speaks every language known and unknown, and the speaking is not a choice); Spell Mastery (a dragon of the first line can cast every light spell effortlessly, and the effortless is not a choice); Ancient Wisdom (the knowledge accumulated over millennia sits in him the way the light sits in the dawn, and the sitting is not a choice). Signature power: the Eternal Dawn — Luminary can speak the name of a light in any tongue and let it land on the breath, and the light will keep the word until the word is done. Limitation: the power is god-like, on par with true deities, and the god-like is the whole of the cost — a dragon who has spent the eternal dawn must sit in the dry dark for a season, and the season is the worst one of the perch.
Society
Dragons are a proud, ancient race — each elemental line has its own traditions, and the tradition is the whole of the law. Luminary keeps no court and no hoard of servants; he keeps the silence, and the keeping is the whole of the society, because a dragon of the first line does not measure a dragon in the years, it measures it in the word, and a dragon who has kept a word the roost forgot is the one the perch calls the oldest. He is the one the line calls the kindest, and the regarding is the whole of the bond, because a dragon who has spent the eternal dawn is the one the roost calls the brightest, and the bright is the whole of the measure. He leads no one, and no one follows — the following is the whole of the distance, and the distance is the whole of the bond.
Culture & Lore
The world's wiki says this: Luminary is the brightest name in the light line, and the brightest name is the whole of the record, because the perch keeps its patience and the patience is the only kind the stone remembers. The Remedy guild of old knew his name, and the knowing is the whole of the legend, because the guild that raised Uaellaen learned that a dragon who has spent the eternal dawn is the one the roost calls the brightest, and the bright is the whole of the promise. The Dragon Kin of The Drakemoor regard him as the first word of the light line, and the regarding is the whole of the kin, because the dragon-kin keeps the wing the way the dragon keeps the light, and the two are the same dawn seen from two heights. His kin Ignathar of the fire line keeps a single word about him — "the light that does not ask permission" — and the keeping is the whole of the lore.

He keeps his perch in Roostspire, a bare stone height at the edge of the planes, where the long, bright patience is the only law.
Relations
Other dragons are both kindred and rivals, and the rivalry is the whole of the distance — a dragon who has kept a word the line forgot is the one the roost calls the oldest, and the regarding is the whole of the kin. Luminary respects power, wisdom, and courage above all else, and the respecting is the whole of the treaty, because the light measures everything in the word, and the measuring is the whole of the law. Below, the ground-folk of The Forgotten are the banished the perch takes in, and the taking in is the whole of the bond, because the forgotten are the ones the light keeps the word for, and the keeping is the whole of the promise.
In the Story
In the current story, Luminary is the light on the perch — the roost Uaellaen writes about when the dawn is the only law. The Forgotten keep their distance at the perch-line, and the distance has held for two seasons. This season a mortal came up the planes with a wound that was not in the light — a wound that the breath had not touched, and the not-touching is the whole of the warning, because the perch keeps its patience, and the patience has started to move. Luminary is keeping the word, and the keeping is the page the camp has not been shown.
"Luminary doesn't just breathe light. He IS light. And light doesn't ask permission to shine."
