Overview
The Grave-Sense Skeleton is the tall, narrow, white shape — heavy through the ribcage and jaw, the head sitting a little too high on the body, like a word that is waiting for a joint, and the whole of it reading as one line from crown to toe that was made before it was made. It is the first of the Skeletons a stranger meets in The Bone Fields, and the one the field keeps for the grave no one else is exact enough to keep. Where the other skeletons of the field are the walk, the Grave-Sense skeleton is the standing behind the walk: the field speaks to it, and it answers with the vigil.
Habitat
The Grave-Sense Skeleton keeps the old ground of The Bone Fields, a field of white bone and cold air where the strength is the only light and the oath is the only law. It needs three things: a field wide enough to hold the bones, a death-magic old enough to wake the walk, and a grave that is being remembered. The fields of the remembered are led by the Oath-Keeper, and the Grave-Sense line is the line the Oath-Keeper reads first, because the line knows every grave in the field, and the knowing is the vigil, and the vigil is the point.
Appearance
The silhouette is the tall, narrow, white line — heavy through the ribcage and jaw, the head a little too high on the body, the whole of it built to read as one held word. Males stand 1.83 m, heavy through the ribcage and jaw, with a low, barked voice that is the field's first step; females stand 1.68 m, leaner and quicker, with a thinner ribcage and a longer memory. The base bone is a clean, deliberate white, the colour of old field-stone seen through a bright glass, with a faint pattern of deeper sea-black patches along the ribcage, and the jaw and the finger-bones a clean bone-white that is the mark the field keeps.
Behaviour
The Grave-Sense Skeleton does not walk first; it stands, and the standing is the vigil, and the vigil is the behaviour. It moves 3 m/s along the walk-line, exact and patient, and it does not hurry, because the grave is the only thing in the field that is worth the hurry, and the grave is never in a hurry. It reads the field before it moves in it: the shape of a grave by the bone it stirs, the cold of a stranger by the air that goes wrong around them, the fall of a bone that has hit the ground and not been set, all of it arriving before the step is made, and the arrival is the vigil.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The weapon is the walk, and the walk is the promise: the Grave-Sense skeleton keeps one walk, and the walk does not come back until the vigil is done, and the nod that is the grave is the last word of the field. The second weapon is the joint, because the walk is not always the word, and the joint that has not been set is the word the walk is too patient for. The defense is the bone, because the clean deliberate white takes a blow the way the field-stone takes the word, and the ribcage is the one part of the body that has been hit the most, and the ribcage is the part that has never given.
Magic Alignment
The Grave-Sense Skeleton stands in the service of Omnath, the Last Memory, the deity of the last remembering, and its magic is the keeping of the grave — the power to make every grave in the field into a word and the word into a vigil. Grave-Sense is the primary gift: the bone reads the field, every grave in it, kept and known, and the knowing is the vigil, and the vigil is the point. The secondary gift is the Bone-Carry of the Skeletons, and in the Grave-Sense line the carry is the grave made bone, the white that keeps the shape, and the keeping is the one thing the cold of the field has never broken.
Society
A Grave-Sense Skeleton stands in a field of the remembered, fields around the bone-rings, and the field is led by the Oath-Keeper, the one who has kept the longest vigil, because the field is the only ground in the world where the keeping is the law. The hierarchy is by the depth of the vigil: the one whose standing goes longest keeps the field's best grave, and the one whose nod is truest keeps the bone-ring. The young bones share the walk-line and share the vigil, and the vigil is the only school the field has, and the school is the field, and the field does not grade, the field only keeps.
Culture & Lore
The Grave-Sense Skeleton keeps its lore in the grave, and the grave keeps it better than the walk does, because the grave is the only book in the world that gets longer when someone dies. The old bones say the first Grave-Sense skeleton was a grave that learned to stand, and the field gave it a body because the field had no other way to keep the vigil. They call the strangers who cross the walk-line "the ones who were worth the grave," and they keep the best of the bone-rings — the white of the ones who were exact enough to be a vigil — on the field, which is the finest teaching in the line.
Home
Its home is The Bone Fields, a field of white bone and cold air, its surface a constant line, its silence broken only by the strength and the word. The Grave-Sense Skeleton is the field's first voice, and the field is the skeleton's first vigil, and the two of them keep each other the way a grave keeps a name. The field is kept by the Oath-Keeper, the walk-lines are kept exact by the young, and the dead are kept where they fell, which is the one law the field does not break.
Relations
The Grave-Sense Skeleton keeps a cold, exact peace with the rest of the Skeletons of The Bone Fields, a peace of kept graves that has held as long as the field has been standing. To Omnath, the Last Memory, the Grave-Sense line is the first remembering made bone, and the line keeps a single sea-black patch of the ribcage at the bone-ring for the god, which is the one offering the god has asked for and never taken, and the asking is the keeping.
In the Story
In the story of the six who arrived, the Grave-Sense Skeleton is the first cold test the field offers, the vigil that asks which of them the grave will keep and which of them the grave will spend. It is the figure that keeps the walk-line while the oaths are made on the ground, and the figure whose vigil is the map the war is kept by, because the bone has read every approach the warrens have taken, and the bone has kept them, and the bone is the one page in the world the war cannot close.
