The Place
The Bone Fields is a field of white bone and cold air, and the white is the whole of the place, because a field that is white is a field that has been kept, and the kept is the law. The field stretches twenty kilometers from the black ridge to the grey moor, and the twenty kilometers is the measure the skeletons trust, because a field that has been counted is a field that has been sworn, and the swearing is the patience. The ground is packed earth with a skin of bone, a white that is more chalk than color, and the bone is the color of the strength, which is to say it is a color you can see in the cold and not in the heat. The air over the field is cold in every season, and the every is the constant, because the field has no summer that breaks the white, and the not-breaking is the law. The sky above the field is a pale grey, the color of the moor when the sun is thin, and the light on the bone is flat and even, the kind of light that does not flatter a face, and there is no face in the field, and the not-face is the quiet. It smells of cold chalk and old air, a smell that is the field and is also the patience, and the one sound under the air is the click, a small dry tap from the center of the field that is the strength being read as a word, and the word is the oath, and the oath is the long. There is no landmark the way a field has a landmark, but there is one: the First Pile, a heap of bone at the center of the field, the oldest heap and the first oath, and the pile is the door, and the door is the click. What makes the Bone Fields itself is the patience: the field keeps its dead the way the dead keep the field, and the keeping is the strength, and the strength is the word, and the word is the end.
How They Live
The Skeletons keep their field in the strength, living in holds of white bone and packed earth, their chambers above the field and their entrances at the field's edge, and a hold is raised one bone at a time, because a bone is the season and a bone is the calendar. The holds are low and square, a pale thatch over a darker bone, and the pale is the roof and the darker is the law, and the law is the cold. Light comes from the field — the flat white of the bone, which holds the thin sun of the season and gives it back, and the giving back is the daylight, and the daylight is the kept. Food is not something the field offers, and the not-offering is the law, because the skeleton does not eat, and the not-eating is the strength, and the strength is the kept; what the field offers is the air, and the air is the only meal the strength needs. Water is drawn from the field's springs, which the strength-keepers tend like a garden, and the tending is the craft and the craft is the rank, and the springs are the grey threads at the field's edge, and the threads are the kept. Heat is not something the field offers, and the not-offering is the constant, and the skeletons have stopped asking it to. The defense is the field itself — a visitor who steps onto the bone is already in the word's path, and the word is the alarm and the welcome and the sentence, because the field has a count, and the count has a patience, and the patience has an end. The day is measured by the strength, which is also the calendar, because the bone is the only clock the oath needs, and the clock does not lie about what is owed. Every skeleton that is named must stand at the First Pile through one full click before the field will call it one of its own, and the standing is the naming, and the naming is the only thing the bone ever gives back.
People
Home of the Skeletons, whose fields are counted by strength. A hundred and odd holds at the last count, and the count is kept by the strength-keepers, which is to say the count is as reliable as the click, which is to say it is reliable until the word breaks. The strength-keepers lead, and rank is decided by the standing, because a keeper who stands the First Pile the season the air is thinnest is the keeper the field trusts. Nothing that cannot stand is welcome, and the not-standing is not an insult, because the field has an oath, and the oath has a patience, and the patience has an end. A traveler who once crossed the field at the hour of the thin sun called it a country that keeps its dead the way other countries keep their fields, and the calling was the truest thing he said and the thing the field paid the least attention to.
In Stories
The place where the strength is the only honest thing, and the thing is the word, and the word is the oath, and the oath is the end. The Forgotten have crossed the field once, on the way to the black ridge, and the crossing was at the hour of the thin sun, and the thin was the decision. Uaellaen heard the click once, at the edge of the First Pile, and the hearing was the patience, and the patience was the only thing that lasted.
