Fire Goblins

Small goblinoid packs of the volcanic wastes. They breed in the heat and fight with ember-tipped spears.

Overview

Fire Goblins are the goblin packs that follow the lava. Where others see waste, they see fuel: every vent is a hearth, every black rock a forge. They raid the volcanic edges for ore and ember-glass, and they trade with no one who cannot stand the heat.

Habitat

Fire goblins live in Emberhollow Caldera, a caldera city of magma channels and ember-forge where the air itself is a weapon against visitors. They need three things: a heat that does not fail, a vent wide enough to forge in, and a road below full of things that have not been melted yet. They are settled around the Ember Pit, the largest active vent in their territory, with raiding-lines across the volcanic edge; a fire goblin who has not stood at the forge in a season is called "the one who forgot the heat."

Appearance

The fire goblin silhouette is the small, wiry, long-armed shape — hunched at the shoulder, narrow at the waist, with the head sitting a little too low on the body, like a spark waiting for a hand. Males stand 91 cm to 1.07 m, wiry and long-armed, built for hauling from the forges, with a crest-tusk of carved obsidian on the brow and knuckles scarred white from the metal; females stand 91 cm but are broader through the shoulders, built for endurance over the ash, and they braid cold ash and hair into war-masks that smolder faintly. The base skin is an orange-tinged green, thin and heat-shedding, the color of a coal seen through green glass, with pale scales along the spine where the blood runs close to the surface and a faint pattern of darker, rust-brown heat-lines along the forearm and the shoulder. The eyes are pale gold, large for the head, nearly blind in bright sun and luminous in the forge-dark. The head is the mark: a flat, broad skull with a pair of long, pointed ears in the same orange-green as the skin, a short crest of coarse black-brown hair, and the crest-tusk of carved obsidian set in the brow, which is the fire goblin line's most persistent claim. Males carry the line in the knuckle-scar and the tusk; females in the shoulder-breadth and the smoldering mask. Elders are marked by skin gone a deep, dull ember-rust and a tusk worn smooth by the years at the forge — an old fire goblin moves slower and holds the blade longer. Everyday wear: a loincloth of stitched ember-hide, a thin band of hammered copper at the wrist, and no boots, because the ash is the ground and the ground is the hearth.

Behavior

Disposition: pack, aggressive, industrial, clannish. In peace, fire goblins are hot-tempered, loud, and absolutely certain of the forge — they have the heat, and they let the waste know it. In war they fight as the wall of flame: charge first, argue second, and melt what cannot be taken. Strangers are either fuel or a story, and the story is usually the one that ends in the forge. The social unit is the pack, 20–80 strong, organized around the Ember Pit — no pack follows a male into the vents; rank is won in the forge, and the one who holds a blade longest in the fire leads. Two signature quirks: a fire goblin who is being lied to will not call it out — they will simply hold the liar's word in the forge-light and wait for it to change shape. And they keep the ember-glass for a lifetime: a piece of glass the pack has melted is a debt, and the debt is paid in heat.

Warfare & Markings

Tactics: the ambush of flame — the fire goblin line does not fight in the open; it fights as the vent fights, with the wall of fire, the ember-glass shard, and the long, deliberate patience of the one who has already chosen what to melt. Armor: none, by choice — the heat-shedding skin is the armor, and a fire goblin who wears metal has already decided the forge is not enough. Weapons: the ember-tipped spear, the short blade that has been held too long in the fire, and the heat itself, which is not a weapon but is used like one. War markings: the Ember-Notch, a deliberate chip in the left tusk for every raid survived, worn as a record of the long heat; the Forge-Knot, a single knot in the ash-braid for every pack oath kept, in rust-brown; and the Melt-Brand, a small, deliberate mark on the inner wrist — the first thing the wearer ever melted, worn as a mark of the beginning. Post-battle: the dead are carried to the Ember Pit, their names spoken over the heat, and their blades laid across the forge — a fire goblin buried without their blade is buried as fuel.

Magic Alignment

Primary domain: fire-storm — fire goblin magic is the vent, the flame, the patient, precise holding of the heat across the waste. Secondaries: chaos and stone-craft. Named inborns: Heat-Sense (a fire goblin can feel the vent's mood the way a sailor feels the wind), Forge-Sight (a fire goblin sees in the forge-dark the way a human sees in the light, and the seeing is not a choice), Ember-Carry (a fire goblin's ember-glass carries the heat across the pack, and the carrying is not a choice). Signature power: the Melt Word — a fire goblin can speak a word in the vent tongue and let it land on a blade, and the blade will keep the word until the fire is done. Limitation: fire goblin magic is spent on the heat; a fire goblin who has spent their melt word must sit in the cool dark for one day, and the day is the worst one of the caldera.

Religion

Fire goblins keep Pyrra, the First Flame as their primary god — the fire, the storm, the raw element that is the waste's own law. The caldera is Pyrra's, and the fire goblin is the caldera's spark. Priestly class: the Ember-Mother, who keeps the forge-temple and speaks the heat at every rite. Heresy is not blasphemy — it is a word broken at the forge, and there is no rite for that one; the pack simply stops holding the blade with the breaker.

Society

Packs of 20–80 organized around the Ember Pit, rank won in the forge: the one who holds a blade longest in the fire leads. The pack is the whole of the law, because the heat is the only clock and the forge the only law, and a fire goblin who has not stood at the forge in a season is called "the one who forgot the heat," and the forgetting is the only kind the caldera remembers. No pack follows a male into the vents; rank is won in the forge, and the winning is the whole of the rank, because a fire goblin does not measure a fire goblin in the years, it measures it in the hold, and a fire goblin who has held a blade the pack forgot is the one the pit calls the oldest. Outsiders in the caldera are either fuel or a story, and the story is the one the forge keeps; a mortal who walks the vent is not a guest, it is a debt, and the debt is the whole of the warning — the caldera owes a melt to the one who stands the heat, and the owing is the whole of the bond. Young are raised at the forge, where the first blade is held, and a young fire goblin who has not held a blade of their own in the fire is not given a tusk of their own. The one fact the surface keeps wrong: the caldera does not hoard the glass — it keeps the heat, and the keeping is the whole of the pack, and a mortal who is counted is a mortal who is owed, and the owing is the only kind the fire keeps.

Home

They live in Emberhollow Caldera, a caldera city of magma channels and ember-forge, where the air itself is a weapon against visitors.

Relations

The "we will burn what you cannot take" faction — raiders whose ambush is a wall of flame, and strange allies whose price is measured in heat. The fire goblin keeps the heat and it measures everything in the melt, and the measuring is the whole of the treaty. The Ogres of the volcanic edge are the raiders the pack counts, and the counting is the whole of the law — the ogre keeps the fang and the fire goblin keeps the flame, and the two have learned that a fang in the heat is not a word, it is a melt, and the melt is the whole of the distance. The Goblin packs of the surface regard the fire goblin the way the sky regards the vent: with distance, and with the understanding that the distance is the whole of the law, because the surface pack measures the caldera in the heat, not in the fang, and a pack that has borrowed a melt is the one the pit calls the kindred. Below, the ground-folk of The Forgotten are the banished the caldera takes in, and the taking in is the whole of the bond, because the forgotten are the ones the fire keeps burning, and the burning is the whole of the promise.

In the Story

In the current story, the fire goblins are the heat below the camp — the caldera Uaellaen writes about when the melt is worth more than the raid. The Forgotten keep their distance at the vent-line, and the distance has held for two seasons. This season a pack came up the magma-channel with a blade that had not been in the forge — a blade that is not in the heat, and the not-listing is the whole of the warning, because the caldera keeps its word, and the word has started to move. Ember-Mother Vashka is keeping the blade, and the keeping is the page the camp has not been shown.

You brought a sword into a volcano. Congratulations, you are the first interesting thing we have melted all season. — Ember-Mother Vashka
