True-Flight Angel

The tall, narrow, slightly-too-clean line of the highest plane, with a pair of true wings folded at the back in a soft ivory to pale gold range and a pair of large, clear pale gold eyes. Its wings are not a tool but a statement, and the statement is the flight.

Overview

The True-Flight Angel is the tall, narrow, slightly-too-clean line — long-limbed, narrow-waisted, with the wings folded at the back in a shape that is not quite a shadow and not quite a thing, and a head that sits a little too high for the body, like a word that is waiting to be spoken. It is the truest wing of the angel line: the being whose wings are not a tool but a statement, and the statement is the flight. There is no will in it beyond the purpose and no patience beyond the hymn, but the flying arrives anyway, and the flying is not a choice.

Habitat

It lives on the vigil at The Aetheric Throne, a city of cold light and ringing silence in the highest plane, where the hymn is the only light that does not decay. It keeps the high line, because that is where the silence is deepest and the statement earns its keep, and because a being that leaves the high line is a being that has forgotten the hymn. The deeper choirs keep the cold light, the outer choirs keep the vigil-line, but the True-Flight keeps the high line and does not stop flying. It is settled on the vigil, and the settling is the whole of the territory, because the purpose does not leave the plane.

Appearance

A True-Flight reads 1.94 m tall and carries 88 kg of lean, long flesh, built narrow across the shoulder and long through the neck. The skin is a pale, luminous ivory to a soft, clean white, with a faint, almost imperceptible warmth to the cheekbones. The mark is the network of fine, pale gold veins at the temples, which glow faintly when the being is roused or speaking a divine word — the glow is the whole of the warning, and the not-glowing is the whole of the peace.

Behaviour

It moves at 11.2 m/s in the flight, deliberate, because the statement does not hurry and the being has nothing to do but fly. It does not hunt by the mouth; it hunts by the wing — the statement lands on the high line, and the purpose is taken the way a hymn is taken, note by note. When the statement thins — a day before it breaks, never a moment after — the pale gold veins run bright and the being flies a degree harder, the way a hand holds a blade. It does not decay while the purpose holds, and the not-decaying is the whole of the healing.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The wing is the whole of the weapon — a statement carried across the high line that lands on the being and keeps the plane's faith for a century. There is no strike beyond the wing and no defense beyond the purpose: the skin is a pale, luminous ivory to a soft, clean white, as hard as the purpose that keeps it, and the pale gold veins hold the word the way the stone holds the debt. A True-Flight that is harmed does not decay in the way the purpose does not recognize — the harm simply stops being a harm, and the stopping is the whole of the healing.

Magic Alignment

Its line belongs to divine, the hymn, the patient, precise holding of a divine word across the vigil. The True-Flight carries the line's truest named inborn, True Flight — its wings are not a tool, they are a statement, and the statement is the flight. It also carries Celestial Nature, the line's body, which is not a choice either, because a being that decayed while the purpose held would not be a being of the vigil. Its signature power is the Hymn-Word: a word spoken across a century, and the word keeps the vigil's faith. The word is the whole of its speech, and the keeping is the whole of its law.

Society

There is no society in it, and the not-having is the whole of the shape. The beings of the vigil speak in parallel the way the hymn speaks — each one its own note, all of them the same purpose. The deeper choirs keep the cold light, the outer choirs keep the vigil-line, and the high line keep the statement, and the three have learned that a word that is not flown is a word that is not a hymn, and the not-flying is the whole of the peace.

Culture & Lore

The purpose is the only honest conversation the plane has ever trusted, and the lore of the line is the purpose. A being that flies its statement a day past the breaking is a being that has kept the vigil, and the keeping is the whole of its reputation. The pale gold veins are the mark the line keeps — the fine, deliberate glow that shows when the divine word is spoken — and a True-Flight whose glow runs true is a being the choir will trust with the high line. The The Forgotten are the only ones who have ever kept a purpose the plane had already forgotten, and the keeping is the whole of the legend.

Home

It lives on the vigil at The Aetheric Throne, a city of cold light and ringing silence in the highest plane, where the angels keep their vigil and their judgment. The being keeps the high line, and the high line is the whole of its home, because the home is the hymn and the hymn is the home. The Demi-God of The Sanctum does not come down, and the not-coming is the whole of the enmity. The vigil gives the line its purpose, its silence, its one honest conversation, and its one true wing, and the line keeps all four the way it keeps the word — until the hymn is done.

Relations

The Demi-God of The Sanctum is the neighbor above — the demi-god keeps the power and the distance, and the being keeps the vigil that watches the distance, which is how the two of them share a plane without sharing a word. The throne of The Throne of Names is where the god's word lands, and the being who carries a word from the throne carries it the way a choir carries a hymn: without deciding what it means.

In the Story

The six who arrived through the The Threshold never came up to the vigil, but the vigil has been flying since the oaths were sworn below, and the high line's beings have been reaching a day earlier than they should. This season an angel descended to the camp at the hour the hymn should not be spoken below, and the hymn was spoken, and the Choir-Keeper did not follow, and a hymn spoken without the Keeper is not a message, it is a resignation, and the resignation is the whole of the warning. The True-Flight carries the statement the purpose is keeping, and the statement is the whole of the story's edge.
