Overview
The Sting-Carry Manticore is the territorial, certain tail of The Sting Crags, a lion-bodied, scorpion-tailed, bat-winged beast of the bare crag who carries the sting and keeps the high rings, the crag's territorial, cunning, and most certain tail. It spans just under 2.9 m long, lion-bodied and patient, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in kept stings rather than years. Where the Crag-Sense manticore senses the sting, the Sting-Carry manticore of the crag carries the sting, and it has been carrying the first sting on the first ring for a very long time.
Habitat
The Sting-Carry Manticore keeps to the high rings of The Sting Crags, a crag of bare stone whose surface is scored with the marks of the claw and whose air is a constant hum. Its dwellings are hollows of bare stone and kept sting, their floors dissolving and re-forming with the hum, their faces catching the amber shimmer of the crag on the inside and the shelter of the stone on the outside. It favors the higher rings where the sting runs widest and the carrying is widest, the places where a sting can be carried without the crag's own motion breaking it.
Appearance
A Sting-Carry Manticore is about 2.9 m long, lion-bodied and patient, with wet amber-brown hide that reads as cold in the amber crag-light. Its tail carries the sea-black sting-bands, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the carrying, and its fangs end in the ivory fang-tips of the crag, the color of the crag's own stone at low hum. Its eyes are washed-out crag-white, bright and certain beneath the brow, and they hold still in a way that no other eye on the crag does — they are reading the sting.
Behaviour
The Sting-Carry Manticore is territorial, cunning, and profoundly aggressive, a creature of long stings and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It waits before it carries, often for hours, waiting on a ring or a stranger or a sting until it understands the shape of the word, and only then does it carry, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by a Sting-Carry manticore is a debt the crag will keep long after the carrier has gone.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The Sting-Carry manticore is no open-sky fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the carry and the crag itself, not force. Its primary defense is the crag, for it knows every hollow of the high rings and can lead a pursuer down The Sting Crags until the pursuit loses its nerve and its footing in the bare stone. Should it be forced to act, a Sting-Carry manticore is quick and precise, 10 m/s down the crag-face and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, dimming a light, holding a ring, or carrying until the threat is spent.
Magic Alignment
The Sting-Carry manticore is attuned to the long word of the crag, for the word is the carrying and the carrying is the whole of its power, and a manticore that has a crag and a tail and a sting does not need a spell that is not its own. Its primary domain is enchantment, and its named powers are the crag-sense, the stone-sight, and the sting-carry, and it is not attuned to any art that is not the crag's own, and the not being attuned is the whole of its way of being free.
Society
The Sting-Carry Manticores keep to The Sting Crags in territorial, cunning packs of ten to forty around the high rings, bound by the stings they carry rather than by blood or by place, led by the Sting-Queen. There is no elder beyond the Sting-Queen, for a manticore that has carried the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a carry and the carry is the whole of their society.
Culture & Lore
The culture of the Sting-Carry Manticore is a culture of the kept sting, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is territorial and cunning is the only honest word on the crag. They keep no records, for a manticore that has carried a sting does not need a record, the carrying is the record, and the carrying is territorial and cunning and does not fade. Their stories are slow and quick, told on the ring at the low hum, and they are stories of stings carried and words kept and the territorial, cunning difference between them, told in a voice that is humming and means every carrying.
Home
The Sting Crags are the Sting-Carry manticore's home and its carrying, a crag of bare stone whose surface is scored with the marks of the claw and whose air is a constant hum, where the manticore carries its stings and keeps its territorial, cunning words. It is a strange and quick place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Sting-Carry manticore has learned to live on that crag rather than against it. The amber shimmer of the crag that runs across the high rings is the crag's own, a cold light that the manticore has come to read as the color of a kept sting.
Relations
The Sting-Carry Manticore keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of The Sting Crags, a truce of kept stings that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the bare stone. To the amber shimmer of the high rings the Sting-Carry manticore is a territorial, cunning, and absolutely aggressive presence, a washed-eyed carrier that is at home on the rings and on the sting, and the shimmer has learned to glow wide and let the carries pass, for a manticore that has carried you has decided you are a promise and not a lesson.
In the Story
In the story of the crag, the Sting-Carry Manticore is the territorial, cunning edge of the tale, the place where the stings are kept and a word is carried and a carrying is read. It is the figure that carries a new sting at the low hum and holds the crag very territorial and very cunning, and the figure that, when the truce with the crag-sensing manticore grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old carry territorial and cunning and absolutely aggressive.
