Creature

Crag-Sense Manticore

A lion-bodied, scorpion-tailed, bat-winged beast of the bare crag who senses the crag and keeps the sting-rings, the crag's territorial, aggressive, and most certain sting.

Overview

The Crag-Sense Manticore is the territorial, certain sting of The Sting Crags, a lion-bodied, scorpion-tailed, bat-winged beast of the bare crag who senses the crag and keeps the sting-rings, the crag's territorial, aggressive, and most certain sting. It spans just under 2.95 m long, lion-bodied and patient, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in kept stings rather than years. Where the Sting-Queen keeps the ring, the Crag-Sense manticore of the crag senses the sting itself, and it has been sensing the first sting on the first ring for a very long time.

Habitat

The Crag-Sense Manticore keeps to the sting-rings of The Sting Crags, a crag of bare stone whose surface is scored with the marks of the claw and whose air is a constant hum. Its dwellings are hollows of bare stone and kept sting, their floors dissolving and re-forming with the hum, their faces catching the amber shimmer of the crag on the inside and the shelter of the stone on the outside. It favors the middle rings where the sting runs oldest and the sensing is oldest, the places where a sting can be sensed without the crag's own motion breaking it.

Appearance

A Crag-Sense Manticore is about 2.95 m long, lion-bodied and patient, with wet amber-brown hide that reads as cold in the amber crag-light. Its tail carries the sea-black sting-bands, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the sensing, and its fangs end in the ivory fang-tips of the crag, the color of the crag's own stone at low hum. Its eyes are washed-out crag-white, bright and certain beneath the brow, and they hold still in a way that no other eye on the crag does — they are reading the sting.

Behaviour

The Crag-Sense Manticore is territorial, aggressive, and profoundly pack, a creature of long stings and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It senses before it acts, often for hours, sensing on a ring or a stranger or a sting until it understands the shape of the charge, and only then does it act, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by a Crag-Sense manticore is a debt the crag will keep long after the sensor has gone.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The Crag-Sense manticore is no open-sky fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the sense and the crag itself, not force. Its primary defense is the crag, for it knows every hollow of the sting-rings and can lead a pursuer down The Sting Crags until the pursuit loses its nerve and its footing in the bare stone. Should it be forced to act, a Crag-Sense manticore is precise and patient, 9 m/s down the crag-face and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, dimming a light, holding a ring, or sensing until the threat is spent.

Magic Alignment

The Crag-Sense manticore is attuned to the long word of the crag, for the word is the sensing and the sensing is the whole of its power, and a manticore that has a crag and a tail and a sting does not need a spell that is not its own. Its primary domain is enchantment, and its named powers are the crag-sense, the stone-sight, and the sting-carry, and it is not attuned to any art that is not the crag's own, and the not being attuned is the whole of its way of being free.

Society

The Crag-Sense Manticores keep to The Sting Crags in territorial, aggressive packs of ten to forty around the sting-rings, bound by the stings they sense rather than by blood or by place, led by the Sting-Queen. There is no elder beyond the Sting-Queen, for a manticore that has sensed the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a sense and the sense is the whole of their society.

Culture & Lore

The culture of the Crag-Sense Manticore is a culture of the kept sting, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is territorial and aggressive is the only honest word on the crag. They keep no records, for a manticore that has sensed a sting does not need a record, the sensing is the record, and the sensing is territorial and aggressive and does not fade. Their stories are slow and patient, told on the ring at the low hum, and they are stories of stings sensed and words kept and the territorial, aggressive difference between them, told in a voice that is humming and means every sensing.

Home

The Sting Crags are the Crag-Sense manticore's home and its sensing, a crag of bare stone whose surface is scored with the marks of the claw and whose air is a constant hum, where the manticore senses its stings and keeps its territorial, aggressive words. It is a strange and patient place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Crag-Sense manticore has learned to live on that crag rather than against it. The amber shimmer of the crag that runs across the sting-rings is the crag's own, a cold light that the manticore has come to read as the color of a kept sting.

Relations

The Crag-Sense Manticore keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of The Sting Crags, a truce of kept stings that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the bare stone. To the amber shimmer of the sting-rings the Crag-Sense manticore is a territorial, aggressive, and absolutely pack presence, a washed-eyed sensor that is at home on the rings and on the sting, and the shimmer has learned to glow wide and let the senses pass, for a manticore that has sensed you has decided you are a promise and not a lesson.

In the Story

In the story of the crag, the Crag-Sense Manticore is the territorial, aggressive edge of the tale, the place where the stings are kept and a word is sensed and a sensing is read. It is the figure that senses a new sting at the low hum and holds the crag very territorial and very aggressive, and the figure that, when the truce with the sting-carrying manticore grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old sense territorial and aggressive and absolutely pack.
