Overview
The Oath-Weight Minotaur is the clannish, certain hand of The Labyrinth, a horned, labyrinthine keeper of the black-stone maze who weighs the oath and keeps the high corridors, the labyrinth's clannish, social, and most certain hand. It stands just under 2.06 m tall, horned and patient, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in kept oaths rather than years. Where the Maze-Memory minotaur remembers the maze, the Oath-Weight minotaur of the labyrinth weighs the oath, and it has been weighing the first oath in the first corridor for a very long time.
Habitat
The Oath-Weight Minotaur keeps to the high corridors of The Labyrinth, a maze of black stone and kept air where every turn is a decision and every dead end is a lesson. Its dwellings are chambers of black stone and kept strength, their floors dissolving and re-forming with the drip, their faces catching the black shimmer of the maze on the inside and the shelter of the stone on the outside. It favors the higher corridors where the oath runs widest and the weighing is widest, the places where an oath can be weighed without the maze's own motion breaking it.
Appearance
An Oath-Weight Minotaur is about 2.06 m tall, horned and patient, with ash-grey labyrinth hide that reads as cold in the black corridor-light. Its brow carries the bone-white horn-bands, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the weighing, and its horns end in the charcoal flank-marks of the maze, the color of the maze's own stone at low drip. Its eyes are washed-out corridor-white, bright and certain beneath the brow, and they hold still in a way that no other eye in the maze does — they are reading the oath.
Behaviour
The Oath-Weight Minotaur is clannish, social, and profoundly honor-bound, a creature of long oaths and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It waits before it weighs, often for hours, waiting on a corridor or a stranger or an oath until it understands the shape of the word, and only then does it weigh, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by an Oath-Weight minotaur is a debt the maze will keep long after the weigher has gone.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The Oath-Weight minotaur is no open-stone fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the weight and the maze itself, not force. Its primary defense is the maze, for it knows every chamber of the high corridors and can lead a pursuer through The Labyrinth until the pursuit loses its nerve and its footing in the dissolving floor. Should it be forced to act, an Oath-Weight minotaur is quick and precise, 6 m/s through the corridors and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, dimming a light, holding a chamber, or weighing until the threat is spent.
Magic Alignment
The Oath-Weight minotaur is attuned to the long word of the maze, for the word is the weighing and the weighing is the whole of its power, and a minotaur that has a maze and a horn and an oath does not need a spell that is not its own. Its primary domain is divination, and its named powers are the maze-memory, the labyrinth sense, and the oath-weight, and it is not attuned to any art that is not the maze's own, and the not being attuned is the whole of its way of being free.
Society
The Oath-Weight Minotaurs keep to The Labyrinth in clannish, social mazes of twenty to sixty, bound by the oaths they weigh rather than by blood or by place, led by the Warden. There is no elder beyond the Warden, for a minotaur that has weighed the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a weight and the weight is the whole of their society. Decisions are made in the chamber, by a company of washed-eyed weighers that has already decided and is only agreeing, and once made they are kept, for a minotaur that breaks a weighing is a minotaur that has broken the whole of what it is.
Culture & Lore
The culture of the Oath-Weight Minotaur is a culture of the kept oath, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is clannish and social is the only honest word in the maze. They keep no records, for a minotaur that has weighed an oath does not need a record, the weighing is the record, and the weighing is clannish and social and does not fade. Their stories are slow and quick, told in the chamber at the low drip, and they are stories of oaths weighed and words kept and the clannish, social difference between them, told in a voice that is stone-heavy and means every weighing.
Home
The Labyrinth is the Oath-Weight minotaur's home and its weighing, a maze of black stone and kept air where every turn is a decision and every dead end is a lesson, where the minotaur weighs its oaths and keeps its clannish, social words. It is a strange and quick place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Oath-Weight minotaur has learned to live in that maze rather than against it. The black shimmer of the maze that runs across the high corridors is the maze's own, a cold light that the minotaur has come to read as the color of a kept oath.
Relations
The Oath-Weight Minotaur keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of The Labyrinth, a truce of kept oaths that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the black stone. To the black shimmer of the high corridors the Oath-Weight minotaur is a clannish, social, and absolutely honor-bound presence, a washed-eyed weigher that is at home in the corridors and on the oath, and the shimmer has learned to glow wide and let the weighings pass, for a minotaur that has weighed you has decided you are a promise and not a lesson.
In the Story
In the story of the maze, the Oath-Weight Minotaur is the clannish, social edge of the tale, the place where the oaths are kept and a word is weighed and a weighing is read. It is the figure that weighs a new oath at the low drip and holds the maze very clannish and very social, and the figure that, when the truce with the maze-remembering minotaur grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old weight clannish and social and absolutely honor-bound.
