Creature

Maze-Memory Minotaur

A horned, labyrinthine keeper of the black-stone maze who remembers the maze and walks the corridors blind, the labyrinth's clannish, honor-bound, and most certain turn.

Overview

The Maze-Memory Minotaur is the clannish, certain turn of The Labyrinth, a horned, labyrinthine keeper of the black-stone maze who remembers the maze and walks the corridors blind, the labyrinth's clannish, honor-bound, and most certain turn. It stands just under 2.13 m tall, horned and patient, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in kept turns rather than years. Where the Warden walks the maze blindfolded, the Maze-Memory minotaur of the labyrinth remembers the maze itself, and it has been remembering the first turn in the first corridor for a very long time.

Habitat

The Maze-Memory Minotaur keeps to the deep corridors of The Labyrinth, a maze of black stone and kept air where every turn is a decision and every dead end is a lesson. Its dwellings are chambers of black stone and kept strength, their floors dissolving and re-forming with the drip, their faces catching the black shimmer of the maze on the inside and the shelter of the stone on the outside. It favors the deeper corridors where the turns run oldest and the remembering is oldest, the places where a turn can be remembered without the maze's own motion breaking it.

Appearance

A Maze-Memory Minotaur is about 2.13 m tall, horned and patient, with ash-grey labyrinth hide that reads as cold in the black corridor-light. Its brow carries the bone-white horn-bands, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the remembering, and its horns end in the charcoal flank-marks of the maze, the color of the maze's own stone at low drip. Its eyes are washed-out corridor-white, bright and certain beneath the brow, and they hold still in a way that no other eye in the maze does — they are reading the turn.

Behaviour

The Maze-Memory Minotaur is clannish, honor-bound, and profoundly patient, a creature of long turns and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It remembers before it acts, often for hours, remembering on a corridor or a stranger or a turn until it understands the shape of the oath, and only then does it act, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by a Maze-Memory minotaur is a debt the maze will keep long after the memory has gone.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The Maze-Memory minotaur is no open-stone fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the memory and the maze itself, not force. Its primary defense is the maze, for it knows every chamber of the deep corridors and can lead a pursuer through The Labyrinth until the pursuit loses its nerve and its footing in the dissolving floor. Should it be forced to act, a Maze-Memory minotaur is precise and patient, 5 m/s through the corridors and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, dimming a light, holding a chamber, or remembering until the threat is spent.

Magic Alignment

The Maze-Memory minotaur is attuned to the long word of the maze, for the word is the remembering and the remembering is the whole of its power, and a minotaur that has a maze and a horn and a turn does not need a spell that is not its own. Its primary domain is divination, and its named powers are the maze-memory, the labyrinth sense, and the oath-weight, and it is not attuned to any art that is not the maze's own, and the not being attuned is the whole of its way of being free.

Society

The Maze-Memory Minotaurs keep to The Labyrinth in clannish, honor-bound mazes of twenty to sixty, bound by the turns they remember rather than by blood or by place, led by the Warden. There is no elder beyond the Warden, for a minotaur that has remembered the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a memory and the memory is the whole of their society.

Culture & Lore

The culture of the Maze-Memory Minotaur is a culture of the kept turn, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is clannish and honor-bound is the only honest word in the maze. They keep no records, for a minotaur that has remembered a turn does not need a record, the remembering is the record, and the remembering is clannish and honor-bound and does not fade. Their stories are slow and patient, told in the chamber at the low drip, and they are stories of turns remembered and oaths kept and the clannish, honor-bound difference between them, told in a voice that is stone-heavy and means every remembering.

Home

The Labyrinth is the Maze-Memory minotaur's home and its remembering, a maze of black stone and kept air where every turn is a decision and every dead end is a lesson, where the minotaur remembers its turns and keeps its clannish, honor-bound words. It is a strange and patient place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Maze-Memory minotaur has learned to live in that maze rather than against it. The black shimmer of the maze that runs across the deep corridors is the maze's own, a cold light that the minotaur has come to read as the color of a kept turn.

Relations

The Maze-Memory Minotaur keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of The Labyrinth, a truce of kept turns that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the black stone. To the black shimmer of the deep corridors the Maze-Memory minotaur is a clannish, honor-bound, and absolutely patient presence, a washed-eyed memory that is at home in the corridors and on the turn, and the shimmer has learned to glow wide and let the memories pass, for a minotaur that has remembered you has decided you are a promise and not a lesson.

In the Story

In the story of the maze, the Maze-Memory Minotaur is the clannish, honor-bound edge of the tale, the place where the turns are kept and an oath is remembered and a remembering is read. It is the figure that remembers a new turn at the low drip and holds the maze very clannish and very honor-bound, and the figure that, when the truce with the oath-weighting minotaur grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old memory clannish and honor-bound and absolutely patient.
