Race

Harpies

Feathered, shrieking aerial raiders of the scream spire. Their song is a weapon, and the spire answers the song.

Overview

Harpies are the feathered kin of the scream spire. Their song is a weapon, the spire answers the song, and they consider the scream a promise the spire keeps for them.

Habitat

Harpies live in The Scream Spire, a sheer tower where the song is the only honest weapon. They need three things: a spire high enough to carry the scream, a prey wide enough to feed the raid, and a stranger who is worth the song. They are settled in spire-nests around the scream-rings, with raid-lines across the mapped current; a harpy that has not screamed in a season is called "the one who forgot the spire."

Appearance

The harpy silhouette is the broad-winged, low, quick shape — heavy through the plumage and talon, with the head sitting a little too high on the neck, like a word that is waiting for a raid. Males stand 1.83 m, broad-winged and proud, with a thick grey plumage and a low, barked voice; they are the raid, the first shriek, and the ones who arrive before the alarm. Females stand 1.83 m, leaner and quicker, with a thinner plumage and a longer memory; they are the scream-queens, the ones whose song is the weapon, and the ones whose nod is the scream. The base plumage is a thick, wet grey, the color of old spire-stone seen through a dark glass, with a faint pattern of deeper, sea-black bands along the wing and a clean, deliberate bone-white at the talon-tip that is the harpy line's most persistent claim. The eyes are a pale, washed-out spire-white, large for the head, with a slow, deliberate blink and a depth that makes them look like they are reading the raid — and in most cases, they are, and the reading is the point. The head is the mark: a long, narrow skull with a pair of true, hooked beaks in bone-white, long and hooked, and the wings, which are the harpy line's most persistent claim — broad, strong, always clean, and always pointed at something. Males carry the line in the wing and the shriek; females in the song and the memory. Elders are marked by a plumage gone a deep, dull spire-slate and a crest gone pale silver — an old harpy raids slower and holds the scream longer. Everyday wear: a wrap of woven kelp at the waist, a single bone bead at the throat, and no armor, because the wing is the armor and the spire is the home.

Behavior

Disposition: feudal, pack, aggressive, cunning. In peace, harpies are watchful, deliberate, and absolutely certain of the spire — they have the scream, and they let the surface know it. In war they fight as the spire fights: the shriek first, the raid second, the patient, precise holding of the song third. Strangers on the surface are either a meal or a mistake, and the mistake is the one the spire remembers. The social unit is the spire-nest, 15–40 strong, around the scream-rings — no nest follows a raider, it follows the scream-queen whose song carries the farthest. Two signature quirks: a harpy that is being lied to will not call it out — they will simply mark the lie's raid and wait, because the marking is the point. And they keep the scream for a lifetime: a scream the spire has kept is a debt, and the debt is paid in raid.

Warfare & Markings

Tactics: the ambush of the scream — the harpy line does not fight in the open current; it fights as the spire fights, with the shriek, the raid, and the long, deliberate patience of the one who has already heard the alarm. Armor: none, by choice — the plumage is the armor, and a harpy who wears metal has already decided the spire is not enough. Weapons: the hooked beak, the talon, the song that is not a weapon but is used like one, and the spire that is not a weapon but is used like one. War markings: the Scream-Notch, a deliberate chip in the left talon for every raid kept, worn as a record of the long spire; the Spire-Knot, a single knot in the tail-braid for every spire oath kept, in sea-black; and the Song-Brand, a small, deliberate mark on the inner wrist — the first scream the wearer ever kept, worn as a mark of the beginning. Post-battle: the dead are carried to the spire, their names spoken over the song, and their talons laid across the threshold — a harpy buried without their song is buried as a surface.

Magic Alignment

Primary domain: illusion — harpy magic is the sound, the scream, the patient, precise shaping of the spire across the scream-rings. Secondaries: enchantment and wild. Named inborns: Spire-Sense (a harpy can feel the prey's mood a day before the raid, and the feeling is not a choice), Sky-Sight (a harpy sees in the dark the way a human sees in the light, and the seeing is not a choice), Song-Carry (a harpy's song carries across the spire, and the carrying is not a choice). Signature power: the Queen's Word — a harpy can speak a word in the spire tongue and let it land on a scream, and the scream will keep the word until the raid is done. Limitation: harpy magic is spent on the spire; a harpy who has spent their queen's word must sit in the dry dark for one day, and the day is the worst one of the spire.

Religion

Harpies keep Mordra, the Unraveler as their primary god — the chaos, the decay, the becoming that is the spire's own law. The spire is Mordra's, and the harpy is the spire's scream-queen. Priestly class: the Scream-Queen, who keeps the spire-temple and speaks the raid at every rite. Heresy is not blasphemy — it is a word broken in the spire, and there is no rite for that one; the spire simply stops keeping the scream with the breaker.

Society

Spire-nests of 15–40, led by the Scream-Queen, rank decided by the scream — whose song carries the farthest. The nest is the whole of the law, because the scream is the only clock and the raid the only law, and a harpy that has not screamed in a season is called "the one who forgot the spire," and the forgetting is the only kind the stone remembers. No nest follows a raider, it follows the scream-queen whose song carries the farthest, and the following is the whole of the rank, because a harpy does not measure a harpy in the years, it measures it in the scream, and a harpy whose song the nest forgot is the one the spire calls the oldest. Outsiders on the surface are either a meal or a mistake, and the mistake is the one the spire keeps — the scream is the whole of the warning: a mortal who has heard the song is a mortal who is owed, and the owing is the whole of the bond. Young are raised in the nest, where the first scream is kept, and a young harpy whose scream the nest has not heard is not given a talon of its own. The one fact the surface keeps wrong: the nest does not hoard the prey — it keeps the scream, and the keeping is the whole of the nest, and a mortal who is counted is a mortal who is owed, and the owing is the only kind the stone keeps.

Home

They live in The Scream Spire, a sheer tower where the song is the only honest weapon.

Relations

The "the song is the only honest weapon" faction — spire neighbors whose scream is a price, and the ones whose nod is the raid. The harpy keeps the scream and it measures everything in the song, and the measuring is the whole of the treaty. The Fae Folk of the wood are the kin the spire regards as the song's older voice — a fae who has kept a song the harpy forgot is the one the nest calls the oldest, and the regarding is the whole of the kin, because the fae sings the way the harpy screams, and the two are the same song seen from two heights. The Humans of the camp regard the scream-ring the way the ground regards the sky: with distance, and with the understanding that the distance is the whole of the warning, because a harpy whose scream the race forgot is the one the spire calls the kindred, and a mortal who has broken a song is the one the stone calls the meal. Below, the ground-folk of The Forgotten are the banished the nest takes in, and the taking in is the whole of the bond, because the forgotten are the ones the scream keeps singing for, and the singing is the whole of the promise.

In the Story

In the current story, the harpies are the scream on the spire — the stone Uaellaen writes about when the song is the only honest weapon. The Forgotten keep their distance at the scream-ring, and the distance has held for two seasons. This season a harpy came up the spire with a scream that was not in the nest — a scream that is not in the song, and the not-listing is the whole of the warning, because the nest keeps its raid, and the raid has started to move. Scream-Queen Vex the Grey is keeping the scream, and the keeping is the page the camp has not been shown.

You stand in our spire and you make a sound. Good. Now we know where you are, and you have made our song's choice for us. The price is a scream. You have one to give, or you are already a meal. — Scream-Queen Vex the Grey
