Overview
Gryphons are the eagle-winged lion-folk of the single sheer peak. They are the guardians of gold and oaths, and they consider the oath a promise the peak keeps for them. They do not speak much, and they do not break a word.
Habitat
Gryphons live in Eaglepeak, a single sheer peak where the oath is the only honest promise. They need three things: a peak high enough to hold the word, a gold old enough to be a law, and a stranger who is worth the silence. They are settled in peaks around the sheer-rings, with oath-lines across the mapped current; a gryphon who has not kept an oath in a season is called "the one who forgot the peak."
Appearance
The gryphon silhouette is the broad, low, winged shape — heavy through the bronze mane and talon, with the head sitting a little too high on the neck, like a word that is waiting for a stranger. Males stand 2.74 m at the wing-span, heavy through the bronze mane and talon, with a low, barked voice; they are the guardians, the first strike, and the ones who stand on the peak and do not move. Females stand 2.74 m, leaner and quicker, with a thinner mane and a longer memory; they are the egg-keepers, the ones whose silence is the law, and the ones whose nod is the oath. The base plumage is a thick, wet bronze-gold, the color of old peak-stone seen through a bright glass, with a faint pattern of deeper, sea-black bands along the wing and a clean, deliberate bone-white at the talon-tip that is the gryphon line's most persistent claim. The eyes are a pale, washed-out peak-white, large for the head, with a slow, deliberate blink and a depth that makes them look like they are reading the oath — and in most cases, they are, and the reading is the point. The head is the mark: a long, narrow eagle-skull with a pair of true, hooked beaks in bone-white, and a short crest of coarse dark-brown hair running from the crown to the nape, which is the gryphon line's most persistent claim. The wings are the mark — broad, strong, always clean, and always pointed at something, the gryphon line's most persistent claim. Males carry the line in the wing and the mane; females in the talon and the memory. Elders are marked by a plumage gone a deep, dull peak-slate and a mane gone pale silver — an old gryphon stands slower and holds the oath longer. Everyday wear: a wrap of woven kelp at the waist, a single gold bead at the throat, and no armor, because the wing is the armor and the peak is the home.
Behavior
Disposition: feudal, clannish, territorial, honor-bound. In peace, gryphons are watchful, deliberate, and absolutely certain of the peak — they have the gold, and they let the surface know it. In war they fight as the oath fights: the strike first, the word second, the patient, precise holding of the silence third. Strangers on the surface are either an oath or a mistake, and the mistake is the one the peak remembers. The social unit is the peak, 10–30 strong, around the sheer-rings — no peak follows a guard, it follows the oath whose word has never been broken. Two signature quirks: a gryphon who is being lied to will not call it out — they will simply keep the oath for the lie and wait, because the keeping is the point. And they keep the gold for a lifetime: a gold the peak has guarded is a debt, and the debt is paid in silence.
Warfare & Markings
Tactics: the wall of the peak — the gryphon line does not fight in the open current; it fights as the peak fights, with the strike, the word, and the long, deliberate patience of the one who has already kept the oath. Armor: none, by choice — the wing is the armor, and a gryphon who wears metal has already decided the peak is not enough. Weapons: the bronze talon, the wing that is not a weapon but is used like one, and the silence that is not a weapon but is used like one. War markings: the Oath-Notch, a deliberate chip in the left talon for every oath kept, worn as a record of the long peak; the Peak-Knot, a single knot in the tail-braid for every peak oath kept, in sea-black; and the Word-Brand, a small, deliberate mark on the inner wrist — the first oath the wearer ever kept, worn as a mark of the beginning. Post-battle: the dead are carried to the peak, their names spoken over the gold, and their talons laid across the threshold — a gryphon buried without their oath is buried as a surface.
Magic Alignment
Primary domain: enchantment — gryphon magic is the will, the oath, the patient, precise shaping of the peak across the sheer-rings. Secondaries: conjuration and wild. Named inborns: Peak-Sense (a gryphon can feel the oath's mood a day before it is broken, and the feeling is not a choice), Gold-Sight (a gryphon sees in the dark the way a human sees in the light, and the seeing is not a choice), Silence-Carry (a gryphon's silence carries across the peak, and the carrying is not a choice). Signature power: the Keeper's Word — a gryphon can speak a word in the peak tongue and let it land on a talon, and the talon will keep the word until the oath is done. Limitation: gryphon magic is spent on the peak; a gryphon who has spent their keeper's word must sit in the dry dark for one day, and the day is the worst one of the peak.
Religion
Gryphons keep no god — the oath is the law, and the law is the peak. The peak is the gryphon's own temple, and the oath-keeper is the peak's own priest. Priestly class: the Oath-Keeper, who keeps the peak-temple and speaks the word at every rite. Heresy is not blasphemy — it is a word broken in the peak, and there is no rite for that one; the peak simply stops keeping the oath with the breaker.
Society
Peaks of 10–30, led by the Oath-Keeper, rank decided by the oath — whose word has never been broken. The peak is the whole of the law, because the word is the only clock and the oath the only law, and a gryphon who has not kept an oath in a season is called "the one who forgot the peak," and the forgetting is the only kind the stone remembers. No peak follows a guard, it follows the oath whose word has never been broken, and the following is the whole of the rank, because a gryphon does not measure a gryphon in the years, it measures it in the word, and a gryphon who has kept an oath the peak forgot is the one the stone calls the oldest. Outsiders on the surface are either an oath or a mistake, and the mistake is the one the peak keeps; a mortal who walks the sheer-ring is not a guest, it is a debt, and the debt is the whole of the warning — the peak owes a silence to the one who stands the gold, and the owing is the whole of the bond. Young are raised at the peak, where the first word is kept, and a young gryphon who has not kept an oath of their own is not given a talon of their own. The one fact the surface keeps wrong: the peak does not hoard the gold — it keeps the oath, and the keeping is the whole of the peak, and a mortal who is counted is a mortal who is owed, and the owing is the only kind the stone keeps.

In the Story
In the current story, the gryphons are the silence on the peak — the stone Uaellaen writes about when the word is the only honest promise. The Forgotten keep their distance at the sheer-ring, and the distance has held for two seasons. This season a gryphon came up the peak with an oath that was not in the oath — a word that is not in the silence, and the not-listing is the whole of the warning, because the peak keeps its word, and the word has started to move. Oath-Keeper Sela the Bronze is keeping the oath, and the keeping is the page the camp has not been shown.
