Overview
The Cavern-Sense Basilisk is the low, broad, heavy shape — long through the ridge and heavy through the claw, the head sitting a little too low on the body, like a word that is waiting for a look. It is the first of the Basilisks a visitor meets in the dark, and the one that decides whether the visitor becomes a story or a statue. Where the other basilisks of the cavern are weapons, the Cavern-Sense basilisk is the listening behind the weapon: the stone speaks to it, and it answers with the gaze. The whole of it reads as one slow line from crown to tail-tip, and every line of it is aimed.
Habitat
The Cavern-Sense Basilisk keeps its ground in The Gaze Caverns, a cavern of turned stone where the walls are carved with the shapes of those who looked. It needs three things: a chamber deep enough to hold the listening, a spring close enough to tend, and a look-line clear enough to hold a stranger without breaking the stone. The young are born into the lower dark, where the stone is wet and the gaze-rings of the old are carved overhead; the elders keep the upper chambers and the springs, and the springs are tended by the gaze-queens like a garden.
Appearance
Males run 3.66 m from crown to tail-tip, 900 kg to 1.1 t, and carry the wet grey-green scale of the deep stone with the sea-black bands along the spine; females run 3.35 m, 750 kg to 850 kg, leaner, with a thinner scale and a longer memory. The distinguishing mark is the gaze-ring: a pale ivory circle of bare, thin skin around each eye, wet and bright, that reads in the dark like a lamp left burning. The young carry a turn-veil, a dull ash-grey wash over the whole scale, that fades as the eye opens, and the old carry the gaze-ring so wide the eye looks set in a frame of bone.
Behaviour
The Cavern-Sense Basilisk does not chase; it keeps a look-line and lets the stranger cross it. It moves low and slow, 4 m/s across the turned floor at most, and it reads the stone under its claws for what the water is doing and what the air is carrying before it decides a single step. It is territorial to the point of arithmetic: it knows every chamber of its cavern, counts the looks it has spent in a season, and will turn a stranger to stone in a chamber that is not its own if the stranger is loud.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The weapon is the gaze, and the gaze is a promise: a Cavern-Sense basilisk spends one look, and the look does not come back until the stone is done. The second weapon is the turn, the slow grinding of the body that follows the gaze, which turns a stranger's limbs to wet stone in the order the gaze touched them — hand first, then arm, then the rest. The defense is the body itself: the thick grey-green scale takes a blow that would open a drake, and the low, heavy line means there is nothing under it to find.
Magic Alignment
The Cavern-Sense Basilisk stands in the service of Omnath, the Last Memory, the deity of the last looking, and its magic is the transmutation of the gaze — the power to make a look into stone and a stone into a look again. Cavern-Sense is the primary gift: the basilisk reads the stone the way a reader reads a page, the water-lines, the old cracks, the pressure of a body moving in the dark, all of it arriving before the step is made. The secondary gift is the turn-veil on the young, which is the memory of the gaze held closed, and the elders say a young basilisk that breaks its veil early breaks the word of the cavern.
Society
A Cavern-Sense basilisk lives in a cavern of 10–30, and the cavern is run by the Gaze-Queen, the oldest eye in the stone. The hierarchy is by the depth of the listening: the one who hears the spring first eats first, and the one who hears the stranger first keeps the stranger's chamber. The young share a chamber and share a look-line, and the turn-veil on each of them is a promise to the cavern that the gaze will be kept closed until the eye is open.
Culture & Lore
The Cavern-Sense Basilisk keeps its lore in the stone, and the stone keeps it well. A look spent on a stranger is a word added to the wall, and the walls of The Gaze Caverns are the oldest library in the world, every statue on them a page in a language the basilisks read by feel. The old say the first basilisk was a stranger's eye that would not stop looking, and the stone gave it a body because it was the only honest thing in the cavern.
Home
Its home is The Gaze Caverns, a cavern of turned stone, its walls carved with the shapes of those who looked, its silence broken only by the gaze and the turn. The Cavern-Sense Basilisk is the cavern's first voice, and the cavern is the basilisk's first word, and the two of them keep each other the way a lamp keeps a dark. The springs are tended like a garden, the look-lines are kept clean by the young, and the turned are left where they fell, which is the one law the cavern does not break.
Relations
The Cavern-Sense Basilisk keeps a cold, exact peace with the other creatures of The Gaze Caverns, a peace of kept looks that has held for as long as the stone has been turned. To Vessurax, the Veiled Eye, the veiled god of the hidden looking, the basilisk is the eye that the veil forgets, and the basilisks leave a wet scale at the far wall for the veiled eye, which is the one offering the god has never refused.
In the Story
In the story of the six who arrived, the Cavern-Sense Basilisk is the first honest test the warrens offer, the look that asks which of them is worth the stone and which of them is worth the word. It is the figure that keeps the gaze-line while the oaths are made above the ground, and the figure that will spend the Queen's Word on the first of the six who looks back. The cavern will be read before the war is over, and the Cavern-Sense basilisk is the reader, and the reader does not lie.
