Word-Hold Golem

The blocky, heavy, deliberate shape of the forge, built from fitted blocks of dark grey granite with a pair of small, deliberate points of pale amber light where the eyes should be. It holds its binding word against the wind, the water, and the doubt, and the holding is not a choice.

Overview

The Word-Hold Golem is the blocky, heavy, deliberate shape — broad across the shoulder, narrow at the waist, with the head sitting low on a thick neck, like a word that is waiting for its meaning. It is the first, truest voice of the golem line: the stone that holds its binding word against the wind, the water, and the doubt, and the holding is not a choice. There is no will in it beyond the word and no doubt beyond the holding, but the holding arrives anyway, and the holding is not a choice. Where the other constructs of the hall stand by the maker's hand, the Word-Hold stands by the word itself.

Habitat

It lives in The Forge Halls, in the black stone chamber where the cold fire shows and the strength is the only light there is. It keeps the standing of the hall, because that is where the duty is easiest to keep, and because a golem that leaves the standing is a golem that has forgotten the word. The metal golems keep the deep forge and the clay golems keep the warm corner, but the Word-Hold keeps the standing and does not move. It is settled in the hall, and the settling is the whole of the territory, because the word does not leave the hall.

Appearance

The silhouette is the blocky, heavy, deliberate shape — broad across the shoulder, narrow at the waist, with the head sitting low on a thick neck. A Word-Hold reads 2.31 m tall and carries 226 kg of fitted dark grey granite, with a faint, deliberate pattern of darker charcoal-grey seams running from the shoulder to the hip. The eyes are the mark: a pair of small, deliberate points of pale amber light set deep in the face, with no blink, because a golem does not sleep, and the not-sleeping is the point. A Word-Hold whose duty is thinning is a golem whose amber light runs low, and the dimming is the whole of the warning.

Behaviour

It moves at 0.9 m/s across the hall floor, deliberate, because the word does the waiting and the golem has nothing to do but hold. It does not hunt and it does not flee; it stands, and the standing is the whole of the behaviour. When the duty thins — a day before it breaks, never a moment after — the pale amber light runs low and the golem holds the word a degree harder, the way a fist holds a stone. It repairs by the seam: a broken block is re-fitted, a cracked seam re-cut, and the re-fitting is the whole of the healing, because the body is as true as the word that built it.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The fist is the whole of the weapon — 45 kg of fitted granite that swings at 0.9 m/s the way the hall swings its cold fire, slow and without waste. There is no strike beyond the fist and no defense beyond the body: the dark grey granite is as hard as the word that cut it, and the darker grey seams hold the blocks the way a sentence holds its letters. A Word-Hold that is broken does not fall — it kneels, and the kneeling is the whole of the dying, because a golem that can still hold the word has not yet stopped.

Magic Alignment

Its line belongs to stone-craft, the maker's word, the fitting of the block, the standing that is the whole of the duty. The Word-Hold carries the line's first named inborn, Word-Hold — it can hold its binding word against the wind, the water, and the doubt, and the holding is not a choice. It also carries Body-True, the line's trueness, which is not a choice either, because a body that is not as true as the word that built it is not a golem's body. Its signature power is the Maker's Word: a word spoken on the duty, and the duty keeps it as long as the holding lasts.

Society

There is no society in it, and the not-having is the whole of the shape. The golems of the hall stand in parallel the way blocks stand — each one its own word, all of them the same meaning. The stone golems keep the standing, the metal golems keep the deep forge, and the clay golems keep the warm corner, and the three have learned that a word that is not held is a word that is not a duty, and the not-holding is the whole of the peace.

Culture & Lore

The word is the only honest conversation the hall has ever trusted, and the lore of the line is the word. A golem that holds its word a day past the breaking is a golem that has kept the hall, and the keeping is the whole of its reputation. The pale amber eyes are the mark the line keeps — the small, deliberate points of light that do not blink — and a golem whose light runs true is a golem the hall will trust with the duty. The Dwarfs of the deep delve are the makers, and the making is the whole of the bond, because the dwarf cuts the joint and the golem keeps the duty.

Home

It lives in The Forge Halls, a hall of black stone and cold fire, where the golems keep their strength and their very long, very quiet, very patient oaths. The golem keeps the standing, and the standing is the whole of its home, because the home is the word and the word is the home. The Humans of the surface do not come down, and the not-coming is the whole of the respect. The hall gives the line its stone, its strength, its one honest conversation, and its one patient oath, and the line keeps all four the way it keeps the word — until the duty is done.

Relations

The Dwarfs of Karn Dun, the Deep Delve are the makers the line regards as the built kin, and the regarding is the whole of the law, because the dwarf cuts the joint and the golem keeps the duty. The Erudite of The Scriptorium are the readers the line regards as the word's keepers, and the regarding is the whole of the bond. The Humans of the surface are the neighbors the line regards from the standing, and the regarding is the whole of the distance, because the human keeps the surface and the golem keeps the hall.

In the Story

The six who arrived through the The Threshold never came down to the forge, but the hall has been quieter since the oaths were sworn above, and the standing's golems have been holding a degree harder than they should. The Word-Hold keeps the word the duty is keeping, and the word is the whole of the story's edge. When the duty breaks that the hall has already felt thinning, the pale amber light will run low before it breaks, and the hall will read the warning the way it has always read the cold fire.
