Overview
The Song-Open Earth Goblin is the clean, singing hand of the Underbrow, a stone-shaping goblin of the singing tunnels who opens the mountains by hand and song, the cleanest hand and the oldest voice in the range. It is small, patient, and absolutely certain of the stone, a being for whom the mountain is a word you open and keep, and for whom the clean tunnels are a room it knows by heart. Where the goblins of the range open the tunnels and the goblins of the hall keep the geode, the Song-Open goblins sing, and they have been opening the first tunnel in the first range for a very long time.
Habitat
The Song-Open Earth Goblin keeps to the singing tunnels of the Underbrow, a mountain range hollowed into a lattice of clean tunnels centered on a geode hall the size of a cathedral, its silence broken only by the song and the stone. Its dwellings are carved into the faces of the clean tunnels, hollows of shaped stone and woven tunnel-cable coaxed into a home that catches the pale geode-light on its inner face and the shelter of the mountain on its outer. It favors the older tunnels where the stone is cleanest and the song is oldest, the places where a tunnel can be opened without the range's own motion breaking it.
Appearance
A Song-Open Earth Goblin stands about 0.95 m tall, small and patient, with stone-pale tan skin that reads as clean in the range's own light. Its hair runs deep umber, worn short and bound so it does not catch the dust, and its eyes are pale brown, bright and patient beneath the brow, the color of the geode-light's own glow at dusk. Its hands are calloused and dusty ochre, the color of the stone it has carried for years, and the calluses are the map of every tunnel it has opened. It wears lashed range-leather and a single opening-stone at its belt, set with a single open-loop at the brow, the loop of an opener.
Behaviour
The Song-Open Earth Goblin is patient, clean, and profoundly certain, a creature of long songs and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It listens before it opens, often for hours, watching a tunnel or a person or a bargain until it understands the shape of the stone, and only then does it open, and then with a patience that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a promise made to a Song-Open goblin is a promise the range will keep long after the maker has gone.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The Song-Open goblin is no open-mountain fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the tunnel and the stone itself, not force. Its primary defense is the tunnel, for it knows every turn of the clean lattice and can lead a pursuer through the singing range for days until the pursuit loses its nerve and its balance. Should it be forced to act, a Song-Open goblin is patient and precise, 9 m/s through the tunnels and steady and unhurried, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, cutting a cable, dimming a light, or opening a tunnel until the threat is spent.
Magic Alignment
The Song-Open goblin has no magic of its own, and it does not want any, and the not wanting is the whole of its way of dealing with the world, for a goblin that has a tunnel and a song and a stone does not need a spell. It is not attuned to any art, and it is not bound by any word that is not its own, and the not being bound is the whole of its way of being free. Its one signature thing is the opening, which is not a magic but is a thing that the goblins of the range have opened for a very long time, and the opening is the keeping, and the keeping is the whole of its power.
Society
The Song-Open Earth Goblins live in the Underbrow in small, patient, and tunnel-bound packs of perhaps four or five, bound by the songs they keep together rather than by blood or by place. There is no elder and no ruler, for a goblin that has opened the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a keeping and the keeping is the whole of their society. Decisions are made in the tunnel, by a company of pale-eyed openers that has already decided and is only agreeing, and once made they are kept, for a goblin that breaks a tunnel is a goblin that has broken the whole of what it is.
Culture & Lore
The culture of the Song-Open Earth Goblin is a culture of the kept song, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is patient and tunnel-bound is the only honest word in the range. They keep no records, for a goblin that has kept a song does not need a record, the keeping is the record, and the keeping is patient and tunnel-bound and does not fade. Their stories are slow and patient, told in the tunnel at the dusk, and they are stories of songs kept and tunnels broken and the patient, tunnel-bound difference between them, told in a voice that is clean and means every opening.
Home
The Underbrow is the Song-Open goblin's home and its keeping, a mountain range hollowed into a lattice of clean, singing tunnels centered on a geode hall the size of a cathedral, where the goblins keep their songs and their patient, clean words. It is a strange and patient place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Song-Open goblin has learned to live inside that stone rather than against it. The pale geode-light that runs up through the tunnels is the range's own, a soft tan glow that the goblins have come to read as the color of a kept song.
Relations
The Song-Open Earth Goblin keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of the Underbrow, a truce of kept songs that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the range. To the pale geode-light of the great hall the Song-Open goblin is a patient, tunnel-bound, and absolutely certain presence, a pale-eyed opener that is at home in the tunnels and in the stone, and the light has learned to glow wide and let the songs pass, for a goblin that has opened you has decided you are a keeping and not a lesson.
In the Story
In the story of the range, the Song-Open Earth Goblin is the patient, clean edge of the tale, the place where the tunnels open and a song is kept and a keeping is kept. It is the figure that opens a new tunnel in the dusk and sings the stone very patient and very certain, and the figure that, when the truce with the surface goblins grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old song patient and tunnel-bound and absolutely certain.
