Creature

Hall-Keep Earth Goblin

A stone-shaping goblin of the singing tunnels who keeps the geode hall and its pale light, the range's memory and its most patient voice.

Overview

The Hall-Keep Earth Goblin is the patient, remembering hand of the Underbrow, a stone-shaping goblin of the singing tunnels who keeps the geode hall and its pale light, the range's memory and its most patient voice. It is small, patient, and absolutely certain of the hall, a being for whom the geode hall is a word you keep and remember, and for whom the clean tunnels are a room it knows by heart. Where the Song-Open goblins open the tunnels, the Hall-Keep goblins keep the hall, and they have been keeping the first hall in the first range for a very long time.

Habitat

The Hall-Keep Earth Goblin keeps to the geode hall of the Underbrow, a mountain range hollowed into a lattice of clean, singing tunnels centered on a geode hall the size of a cathedral, its silence broken only by the keeping and the stone. Its dwellings are carved into the faces of the great hall, hollows of shaped stone and woven tunnel-cable coaxed into a home that catches the pale geode-light on its inner face and the shelter of the mountain on its outer. It favors the older corners of the hall where the stone is oldest and the light is slowest, the places where a memory can be kept without the range's own motion breaking it.

Appearance

A Hall-Keep Earth Goblin stands about 0.93 m tall, small and patient, with stone-pale tan skin that reads as old in the hall's own light. Its hair runs deep umber, worn short and bound so it does not catch the dust, and its eyes are pale brown, bright and patient beneath the brow, the color of the geode-light's own glow at dusk. Its hands are calloused and dusty ochre, the color of the stone it has carried for years, and the calluses are the map of every hall it has kept. It wears lashed range-leather and a single keeping-stone at its belt, set with a single keep-loop at the brow, the loop of a keeper.

Behaviour

The Hall-Keep Earth Goblin is patient, slow, and profoundly certain, a creature of long keepings and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It observes before it keeps, often for hours, watching a hall or a person or a bargain until it understands the shape of the stone, and only then does it keep, and then with a patience that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a promise made to a Hall-Keep goblin is a promise the range will keep long after the maker has gone.

Natural Weapons & Defenses

The Hall-Keep goblin is no open-mountain fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the hall and the stone itself, not force. Its primary defense is the hall, for it knows every corner of the great geode space and can lead a pursuer through the singing range for days until the pursuit loses its nerve and its balance. Should it be forced to act, a Hall-Keep goblin is slow and precise, 8 m/s through the halls and unhurried, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, cutting a cable, dimming a light, or keeping a hall until the threat is spent.

Magic Alignment

The Hall-Keep goblin has no magic of its own, and it does not want any, and the not wanting is the whole of its way of dealing with the world, for a goblin that has a hall and a memory and a stone does not need a spell. It is not attuned to any art, and it is not bound by any word that is not its own, and the not being bound is the whole of its way of being free. Its one signature thing is the keeping, which is not a magic but is a thing that the goblins of the range have kept for a very long time, and the keeping is the remembering, and the remembering is the whole of its power.

Society

The Hall-Keep Earth Goblins live in the Underbrow in small, patient, and hall-bound packs of perhaps four or five, bound by the keepings they hold together rather than by blood or by place. There is no elder and no ruler, for a goblin that has kept the most and remembered the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a keeping and the keeping is the whole of their society. Decisions are made in the hall, by a company of pale-eyed keepers that has already decided and is only agreeing, and once made they are kept, for a goblin that breaks a memory is a goblin that has broken the whole of what it is.

Culture & Lore

The culture of the Hall-Keep Earth Goblin is a culture of the kept memory, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is patient and hall-bound is the only honest word in the range. They keep no records, for a goblin that has kept a memory does not need a record, the keeping is the record, and the keeping is patient and hall-bound and does not fade. Their stories are slow and patient, told in the hall at the dusk, and they are stories of memories kept and halls broken and the patient, hall-bound difference between them, told in a voice that is old and means every keeping.

Home

The Underbrow is the Hall-Keep goblin's home and its keeping, a mountain range hollowed into a lattice of clean, singing tunnels centered on a geode hall the size of a cathedral, where the goblins keep their memories and their patient, old words. It is a strange and patient place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Hall-Keep goblin has learned to live inside that stone rather than against it. The pale geode-light that runs up through the hall is the range's own, a soft tan glow that the goblins have come to read as the color of a kept memory.

Relations

The Hall-Keep Earth Goblin keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of the Underbrow, a truce of kept memories that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing in the range. To the pale geode-light of the great hall the Hall-Keep goblin is a patient, hall-bound, and absolutely certain presence, a pale-eyed keeper that is at home in the halls and in the stone, and the light has learned to glow wide and let the memories pass, for a goblin that has kept you has decided you are a remembering and not a lesson.

In the Story

In the story of the range, the Hall-Keep Earth Goblin is the patient, old edge of the tale, the place where the halls keep and a memory is held and a remembering is held. It is the figure that keeps a new hall in the dusk and holds the light very patient and very certain, and the figure that, when the truce with the surface goblins grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old memory patient and hall-bound and absolutely certain.
