Overview
The Mirror-Sense Kelpie is the solitary, certain lure of The Fen Mirror, a horse-shaped, water-bound reader of the mirror-still bog who senses the mirror and keeps the mirror-rings, the bog's solitary, cunning, and most certain lure. It stands 1.65 m at the shoulder in its stallion form, wet and patient, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in kept drowns rather than years. Where the selkie of the shore keeps the skin, the Mirror-Sense kelpie of the bog senses the mirror, and it has been sensing the first mirror on the first ring for a very long time.
Habitat
The Mirror-Sense Kelpie keeps to the mirror-rings of The Fen Mirror, a mirror-still bog where the surface is a promise and the drown is a treaty. Its dwellings are hollows of black mud and kept water, their floors dissolving and re-forming with the drip, their faces catching the grey shimmer of the bog on the inside and the shelter of the mud on the outside. It favors the deeper rings where the mirror runs oldest and the sensing is oldest, the places where a mirror can be sensed without the bog's own motion breaking it.
Appearance
A Mirror-Sense Kelpie is about 1.65 m at the shoulder in its stallion form, long and wet, with thick grey-brown coat that reads as cold in the grey bog-light. Its spine carries the moss-black bands, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the sensing, and its hooves are the color of the bog's own mud at low drip. Its eyes are pale fen-white, washed out and bright beneath the brow, and they hold still in a way that no other eye on the bog does — they are reading the rider. It wears nothing, for the coat is its garment, and it carries a single grey stone in the mane, set with a single sense-loop at the brow, the loop of a reader.
Behaviour
The Mirror-Sense Kelpie is solitary, cunning, and profoundly territorial, a creature of long mirrors and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It senses before it acts, often for hours, sensing on a ring or a rider or a mirror until it understands the shape of the drown, and only then does it act, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by a Mirror-Sense kelpie is a debt the bog will keep long after the reader has gone.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The Mirror-Sense kelpie is no open-water fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the sense and the ring itself, not force. Its primary defense is the ring, for it knows every hollow of the mirror-bog and can lead a pursuer across The Fen Mirror until the pursuit loses its nerve and its footing on the dissolving mud. Should it be forced to act, a Mirror-Sense kelpie is precise and patient, 6 m/s over the grey surface and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, dimming a light, holding a ring, or drowning until the threat is spent.
Magic Alignment
The Mirror-Sense kelpie is attuned to the long word of the bog, for the word is the sensing and the sensing is the whole of its power, and a kelpie that has a bog and a coat and a mirror does not need a spell that is not its own. Its primary domain is enchantment, and its named powers are the mirror-sense, the fen-sight, and the drag-carry, and it is not attuned to any art that is not the bog's own, and the not being attuned is the whole of its way of being free.
Society
The Mirror-Sense Kelpies keep to The Fen Mirror in solitary, cunning bogs of one, in the mirror-rings, bound by the mirrors they keep rather than by blood or by place, ranked by whose drag is truest. There is no elder and no leader, for a kelpie that has sensed the most and drowned the truest is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a sense and the sense is the whole of their society. Decisions are made on the ring, by a company of pale-eyed readers that has already decided and is only agreeing, and once made they are kept, for a kelpie that breaks a sensing is a kelpie that has broken the whole of what it is.
Culture & Lore
The culture of the Mirror-Sense Kelpie is a culture of the kept mirror, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is solitary and cunning is the only honest word on the bog. They keep no records, for a kelpie that has sensed a mirror does not need a record, the sensing is the record, and the sensing is solitary and cunning and does not fade. Their stories are slow and patient, told on the ring at the low drip, and they are stories of mirrors sensed and drowns kept and the solitary, cunning difference between them, told in a voice that is wet and means every sensing.
Home
The Fen Mirror is the Mirror-Sense kelpie's home and its sensing, a mirror-still bog where the surface is a promise and the drown is a treaty, where the kelpie senses its mirrors and keeps its solitary, cunning words. It is a strange and patient place, one that stands as if it were a very old animal holding its breath, and the Mirror-Sense kelpie has learned to live on that mud rather than against it. The grey shimmer of the bog that runs across the mirror-rings is the bog's own, a cold light that the kelpie has come to read as the color of a kept mirror.
Relations
The Mirror-Sense Kelpie keeps a long, careful truce with the other creatures of The Fen Mirror, a truce of kept mirrors that has held for a long time and is the oldest and most fragile thing on the black mud. To the grey shimmer of the mirror-rings the Mirror-Sense kelpie is a solitary, cunning, and absolutely territorial presence, a pale-eyed reader that is at home in the rings and on the mirror, and the shimmer has learned to glow wide and let the senses pass, for a kelpie that has sensed you has decided you are a promise and not a lesson.
In the Story
In the story of the bog, the Mirror-Sense Kelpie is the solitary, cunning edge of the tale, the place where the mirrors are kept and a drown is sensed and a sensing is read. It is the figure that senses a new mirror at the low drip and holds the bog very solitary and very cunning, and the figure that, when the truce with the drag-carrying kelpie grows thin, is the one that remembers what the truce cost and keeps the old sense solitary and cunning and absolutely territorial.
