Lizard Men

Amphibious, patient reptilian humanoids of the marshes and river deltas. They wait for everything.

Overview

Lizard Men are scaled, amphibious humanoids who hold the marshes, river deltas, and drowned forests. Where other races build and expand, Lizard Men wait — for the water to rise, for the enemy to grow careless, for the moment to be exact.

Habitat

Lizard Men live in The Scale Pool, a pool of black scale in the deep marsh, where the scale is the only light and the patience the only law. They need three things: a pool deep enough to hold the scale, a current wide enough to carry the wait, and a stranger who is worth the crossing. They are settled in pools around the scale-rings, with current-lines across the mapped current; a Lizard Man who has not kept a wait in a season is called "the one who forgot the pool."

Appearance

THE Lizard Man silhouette is the tall, narrow, scaled shape — heavy through the shoulder and the flank, with the head sitting a little too low on the body, like a word that is waiting for a crossing. Males stand 1.52 m to 2.13 m, heavy through the shoulder and the flank, with a low, barked voice; they are the wardens, the first crossing, and the ones who stand in the marsh and do not move. Females stand 1.52 m to 2.13 m, leaner and quicker, with a thinner scale and a longer memory for the current; they are the matriarchs, the ones whose word is the law, and the ones whose nod is the pool. The base scale is a black, deliberate scale, the color of old marsh-water seen through a dark glass, with a faint pattern of deeper, sea-black patches along the flank and a clean, deliberate bone-white at the jaw and the finger-tip that is the Lizard Man line's most persistent claim. The eyes are a pale, washed-out pool-white, large for the head, with a slow, deliberate blink and a depth that makes them look like they are reading the current — and in most cases, they are, and the reading is the point. The scale is the mark: a thick, wet, glistening scale that is always pointed at something, which is the Lizard Man line's most persistent claim. Males carry the line in the shoulder and the crossing; females in the current and the wait. Lifespan: about 200 years. They eat the marsh: the fish, the reeds, the small game, and the scale that keeps the patience honest. Everyday wear: a wrap of woven reed at the waist, a single scale bead at the throat, and no armor, because the scale is the armor and the pool is the home.

Behavior

Disposition: clannish, territorial, honor-bound. In peace, Lizard Men are watchful, deliberate, and absolutely certain of the pool — they have the current, and they let the surface know it. In war they fight as the marsh fights: the crossing first, the word second, the patient, precise holding of the wait third. Strangers on the surface are either a crossing or a lesson, and the lesson is the one the pool remembers. The social unit is the river-matriarchy, 15–40 strong, around the scale-rings — no pool follows a warden, it follows the eldest living matriarch who holds the Deep Current, a title of near-spiritual authority. Tidal calendars measure the day, patience is a virtue, and the belief that anything rushed is already lost holds across every pool. A Lizard Man truce lasts as long as the water is still. Two signature quirks: a Lizard Man who is being lied to will not call it out — they will simply keep the wait for the lie and wait, because the keeping is the point. And they keep the current for a lifetime: a current the pool has kept is a debt, and the debt is paid in crossing.

Warfare & Markings

Tactics: the ambush of the current — the Lizard Man line does not fight in the open current; it fights as the marsh fights, with the crossing, the word, and the long, deliberate patience of the one who has already kept the wait. Armor: none, by choice — the scale is the armor, and a Lizard Man who wears metal has already decided the pool is not enough. Weapons: the scale that is not a weapon but is used like one, and the crossing that is not a weapon but is used like one. War markings: the Scale-Notch, a deliberate chip in the left jaw for every wait kept, worn as a record of the long pool; the Current-Knot, a single knot in the hair for every pool oath kept, in sea-black; and the Marsh-Brand, a small, deliberate mark on the inner wrist — the first crossing the wearer ever kept, worn as a mark of the beginning. Post-battle: the dead are carried to the pool, their names spoken over the current, and their scales laid across the threshold — a Lizard Man buried without their scale is buried as a surface.

Magic Alignment

Primary domain: conjuration — Lizard Man magic is the will, the current, the patient, precise shaping of the marsh across the scale-rings. Secondaries: wild and enchantment. Named inborns: Pool-Sense (a Lizard Man can feel the water's mood a day before it rises, and the feeling is not a choice), Scale-Sight (a Lizard Man sees in the dark the way a human sees in the light, and the seeing is not a choice), Current-Carry (a Lizard Man's word carries across the marsh, and the carrying is not a choice). Signature power: the Matriarch's Word — a Lizard Man can speak a word in the pool tongue and let it land on a scale, and the scale will keep the word until the current is done. Limitation: Lizard Man magic is spent on the pool; a Lizard Man who has spent their matriarch's word must sit in the dry marsh for one day, and the day is the worst one of the pool.

Religion

Lizard-men keep Korrath, the Fang as their primary god — the wild, the beast, the hunt that is the marsh’s own law. The marsh is Korrath’s, and the Lizard Man is the marsh’s scale. Priestly class: the Deep Current, who keeps the pool-temple and speaks the name at every rite. Heresy is not blasphemy — it is a word broken in the pool, and there is no rite for that one; the pool simply stops keeping the current with the breaker.

Society

River-matriarchies of 15–40, led by the eldest living matriarch who holds the Deep Current, rank decided by the wait — whose patience is longest. Rank is never inherited, it is held: a pup whose first wait ends clean can outrun its own matriarch before the season turns, and the outrunning is the whole of the law, because the pool does not care about the blood, it cares about the holding. The pools keep a scale-shelf in the deep — a single row of hollows where an outsider's name is written while the crossing is open, and the writing is the whole of the courtesy, because a Lizard Man who writes your name has already decided you are a crossing worth keeping, and a Lizard Man who does not write it has already decided the pool is not enough. Outsiders on the surface are either a crossing or a lesson, and the lesson is the one the pool remembers — a lesson that breaks a truce is remembered until the water is still, and the stillness is the whole of the apology, because an apology that is not kept is not an apology, it is a word, and a word is not in the pool. Two rules hold in the pool: a wait is not rushed, and a crossing is not refused — the first because the rushing is the whole of the heresy, and the second because the refusing is the whole of the war, and a crossing refused is a crossing the marsh does not return.

Home

They live in The Scale Pool, a pool of black scale in the deep marsh, where the scale is the only light and the patience the only law.

Relations

THE classic ambush faction — and the keeping of the wait is the whole of the peace. The Frogloks of the shallows are either kin or a lesson, and the lesson is the one the pool remembers — a froglok that has rushed the crossing has already decided the marsh is its, and the deciding is the whole of the offense, because the froglok keeps the shallows and the Lizard Man keeps the deep current, and the two are the same water seen from two moods. The Selkies of the mirror trade at the pool-mouth — the selkie keeps the drown and the Lizard Man keeps the crossing, and the two are the same bargain seen from two seasons. The Trolls of the river-bends are the neighbors the pools do not wait on — the bend floods, the pool holds, and when the water crosses the same stone the stone belongs to the current that day, which is how the pools read it. The Orc bands of the ridgeline raid the delta-farms, and the raiding is the whole of the distance, because the orc keeps the ridge and the Lizard Man keeps the delta, and the two have learned that a delta that is not crossed is a delta that is not a wait. The Elementals of the water-planes are the current the pools drink from — the element keeps the weather and the pool keeps the wait, and the two are the same marsh seen from two seasons, and the Lizard Men are the hidden allies of the water above all the rest. The ground-folk of The Forgotten cross at the matriarch's nod, and the nod has held for two seasons. This season a scale-shelf was found in the deep with a name in it that no pool in the marsh wrote — a name that is not in the pool's memory, and the not-memory is the whole of the warning, because the pools keep their waits and the waits do not lie. The name is the one the camp has not been shown, and the showing is the crossing, and the crossing is the whole of the story.
