Forging

Forging — the the recipe; a sidearm.

The Recipe

Inputs: Iron or Steel, coal, the maker's time Output: a sidearm, an arm weapon, a tool — the journeyman's edge Time: a week for a sidearm, a season for an arm

The forging is the first step above the floor: the iron takes the shape, and the shape is the one the maker's hand has to hold. A forged blade is the argument that the metal can be made right — and the right is the one the guild mark is worth.

The recipe is the knowledge, and the knowledge is the one the guild charges for — on the ladder in The Maker's Hand, the recipe is the middle leg: the world gives the material, the maker knows the recipe, and the item is what the maker owes.
