The Place
The Coil Marshes is a swamp of coiled towers built of woven reeds and bone, and the coiling is the whole of the place, because a tower that is coiled is a tower that has been grown, and the growing is the law. The marsh stretches fifteen kilometers from the black water to the reed line, and the fifteen kilometers is the measure the serpent folk trust, because a marsh that has been counted is a marsh that has been courted, and the courting is the keeping. The water of the marsh is black and still, a black that is more depth than color, and the still is the color of the coil, which is to say it is a color you can see in the court and not in the wild. The towers are coiled of woven reed and pale bone, a grey-brown that darkens to black at the base, and the darkening is the season, and the season is the rite. The sky over the marsh is a flat green, the color of the reed line when the mist is up, and the mist is up, and the up is the calendar. It smells of black water and slow venom, a smell that is the marsh and is also the court, and the one sound under the mist is the drip, a single slow crack from the center of the marsh that is the venom being read as a word, and the word is the promise, and the promise is the sentence. There is no landmark the way a marsh has a landmark, but there is one: the First Coil, a tower of pale bone at the center of the marsh, the oldest coil and the first court, and the coil is the door, and the door is the drip. What makes the Coil Marshes itself is the promise: the marsh keeps its courts the way the court keeps the venom, and the keeping is the promise, and the promise is the word, and the word is the end.
How They Live
The Serpent Folk build their towers in the marsh, coiled structures of woven reed and bone, their chambers dark and cool, their entrances low and guarded by the venom-wall. A tower is coiled one reed at a time, and a reed is the season and a reed is the calendar, and the coiling is the craft and the craft is the rank, and a coil that has coiled a tower the marsh has forgotten is the coil the court trusts. Light comes from the dark — the black water of the marsh, which glows faintly in the deep, and the glow is the daylight, and the daylight is the court, and the court is the kept. Food is the marsh itself: the fish, the reeds, the small game, and the venom that keeps the court honest, and the fish is the staple, because the fish is the promise, and the promise is the sentence. Water is the marsh, and the marsh is the water, and the coil drinks and hunts and courts in the same black pool. Heat is not something the marsh offers, and the not-offering is the law, and the serpent folk have stopped asking it to. The defense is the venom itself — a visitor who steps into the marsh is already in the fang's path, and the fang is the alarm and the welcome and the sentence, because the marsh has a wall of venom, and the wall is the law, and the law is the word. The day is measured by the coil, which is also the calendar, because the marsh is the only clock the coil needs, and the clock does not lie about what is owed. Every coil that is named must pass the First Coil through one full drip before the marsh will call it one of its own, and the passing is the naming, and the naming is the only thing the court ever gives back.
People
Home of the Serpent Folk, whose coils are counted by tower. Eleven towers at the last count, and the count is kept by the court-wards, which is to say the count is as reliable as the drip, which is to say it is reliable until the promise breaks. The court-wards lead, and rank is decided by the court, because a ward who courts a promise the marsh has forgotten is the ward the court trusts. Nothing that cannot pass the First Coil is welcome, and the not-passing is not an insult, because the marsh has a promise, and the promise has a sentence, and the sentence has an end. A surface trader who once watched the marsh from the reed line called it a place that courts its promises in black water, and the calling was the truest thing he said and the thing the marsh paid the least attention to.
In Stories
The place where the court is a promise, and the promise is the coil, and the coil is the venom, and the venom is the sentence. The Forgotten have passed the marsh once, on the way to the black water, and the passing was at the hour of the mist, and the mist was the decision. Uaellaen heard the drip once, at the center of the First Coil, and the hearing was the promise, and the promise was the only thing that lasted.
