The Place
The Bone Ossuary is an ossuary of pale bone, and the pale is the whole of the place, because an ossuary that is pale is an ossuary that has been lit, and the lit is the law. The ossuary sits in a hollow of black stone between the grey moor and the white field, and the hollow is the measure the liches trust, because a hollow that holds the glow is a hollow that holds the anchor. The chambers are cut of packed earth and pale ribcage, a white that is more light than bone, and the white is the color of the soul, which is to say it is a color you can feel in the dark and not in the light. Light comes from the soul — a faint blue-green phosphorescence that moves along the walls of the chambers, and the green is the color of the glow, and the glow is the daylight, and the daylight is the kept. The air in the ossuary is thick with the smell of old bone and old promise, a smell that is the ossuary and is also the warning, and the one sound under the smell is the tick, a small dry click from the deepest chamber that is the spell being read as a word, and the word is the anchor, and the anchor is the promise. There is no landmark the way a hollow has a landmark, but there is one: the First Anchor, a single pale bone set in the floor of the deepest chamber, the oldest anchor and the first spell, and the anchor is the door, and the door is the tick. What makes the Bone Ossuary itself is the anchor: the ossuary holds its dead the way the dead hold the promise, and the holding is the soul, and the soul is the glow, and the glow is the end.
How They Live
The Liches build their ossuaries in the bone, chambers of pale ribcage and packed earth, lined with hide and bone, their entrances low and guarded by the anchor-wall. A chamber is cut one anchor at a time, and an anchor is the season and an anchor is the calendar, and the cutting is the craft and the craft is the rank, and a lich that has cut a chamber the ossuary has forgotten is the lich the glow trusts. Light comes from the ossuary — the pale shimmer of the soul, which glows faintly in the dark, and the shimmer is the daylight, and the daylight is the kept. Food is not something the ossuary offers, and the not-offering is the law, because the lich does not eat, and the not-eating is the anchor, and the anchor is the kept; what the ossuary offers is the name, and the name is the only meal the promise needs. Water is drawn from the ossuary's springs, which the anchor-keepers tend like a garden, and the tending is the craft and the craft is the rank, and the springs are the cold threads at the hollow's edge, and the threads are the kept. Heat is not something the ossuary offers, and the not-offering is the constant, and the liches have stopped asking it to. The defense is the ossuary itself — a visitor who stands in the ossuary is already in the spell's path, and the spell is the alarm and the welcome and the sentence, because the ossuary has a count, and the count has a promise, and the promise has an end. The day is measured by the anchor, which is also the calendar, because the ossuary is the only clock the promise needs, and the clock does not lie about what is owed. Every lich that is named must stand in the deepest chamber through one full tick before the ossuary will call it one of its own, and the standing is the naming, and the naming is the only thing the glow ever gives back.
People
Home of the Liches, whose ossuaries are counted by anchor. Seven chambers at the last count, and the count is kept by the anchor-keepers, which is to say the count is as reliable as the tick, which is to say it is reliable until the promise breaks. The anchor-keepers lead, and rank is decided by the keeping, because a keeper who keeps a spell the ossuary has forgotten is the keeper the glow trusts. Nothing that cannot keep a name is welcome, and the not-keeping is not an insult, because the ossuary has a promise, and the promise has a spell, and the spell has an end. A traveler who once stood at the anchor-wall called it a place where the dead keep their accounts and the accounts keep the dead, and the calling was the truest thing he said and the thing the ossuary paid the least attention to.
In Stories
The place where the anchor is the only honest promise, and the promise is the spell, and the spell is the soul, and the soul is the end. The Forgotten have not entered the ossuary, and the not-entering is the decision, and the decision is the longest one the guild has made. Uaellaen heard the tick once, from outside the anchor-wall, and the hearing was the promise, and the promise was the only thing that lasted.
