Spear

Spear — piercing, arm · apprentice. piercing

The Line

The spear is the line's whole reason for existing: two hands, one long reach, and the distance where the other man is a rumor. The spear does not cut — the spear argues with distance, and the distance is the whole point. The shaft is ash, the head is iron, and the reach is the argument that the fight is over before the other man has decided it has started.

A journeyman spear is an honest piece of work — the ash shaft, the iron head, the grip that has been stood against. A master spear has the maker's mark on the socket, and the socket is the part that takes the blow so the shaft does not — which is the whole point, and the whole reason the spear is the weapon of the man who is paid to stand.

In the Hand

The spear is the arm band's answer to the flail: the distance where the flail's head is a rumor, and the spear's head is the one who is still standing. It is the answer to the long sword, the answer to the battle axe, and the question the warhammer asks: what if the distance is the argument, and the argument is the one who is still standing?

"The spear is not a weapon. The spear is a distance — and the distance is the one who is still standing." — guild master, The Company
