The Professional
Scale mail is the armor of the professional — the guild fighter, the man who is paid to be good, the one who has been stood against and is still here. The scales are iron, the base is leather, and the scale is the whole point: the cut goes over the scale, and the scale is the one who is hit, and the body behind it is the body that is still standing.
A journeyman scale mail is a season's labor in the scales, and the scales are named — the forge, the hand, the year. A master scale mail has the maker's mark on the shoulder, and the shoulder is the part that takes the blow so the arm does not — which is the whole point, and the whole reason the scale mail is the armor of the man who is paid to stand.
In the Hand
The scale mail is the armor tier where the AGI cost is real but survivable: −20, and the fighter who wears it is the fighter who has decided the argument is not about being the fastest. It is the answer to the long sword's cut, the answer to the dagger, and the question the chain mail asks: what if the body is the wall, and the wall is the one who is still standing?
"The scale mail is not armor. The scale mail is a name — and the name is the one on the shoulder." — guild master, The Company
