BODY:
Overview
The One-Breath Drake is the long, coiled, sharp shape — heavy through the shoulder, long through the crest, the head low on a thick neck, the wings folded tight, and the whole of it reading as one low line from beak to tail-tip, like a knife that is waiting for a hand. It is the first of the Drakes a stranger meets in The Scale Pits, and the one the pit keeps for the argument no one else will finish. Where the true dragons are philosophers with bodies, the One-Breath drake is a grudge with a schedule: it holds one breath, it takes one dive, and the dive is the last word.
Habitat
The One-Breath Drake keeps the high ground of The Scale Pits, a pit of black scale and broken wing where the quarrel is the only law. It needs three things: a height no spear can reach, a hoard worth the guarding, and a quarrel wide enough to spend a breath on. The young are born into the roost-chambers of the pit wall, two to a dozen to a roost, and the roost is the one place in the pit the quarrel is quiet, because the roost is the only room in the world where the sky is shared.
Appearance
The silhouette is the coiled, low, sharp line — long-bodied, broad-shouldered, the head sitting low on a thick neck, the whole of it built to read as one held breath. Males run 7.62 m to 12.19 m nose to tail, the One-Breath males the top of the range, 10.97 m, 2,400 kg to 3,000 kg; females run 4.57 m to 7.62 m, 950 kg to 1,200 kg, quicker and thinner-crested. The base scale is a deep dull bronze-green with the umber spine running dark down its length, the eye hard and flat amber, and the burn-rudder a wash of sea-black on the folded wing.
Behaviour
The One-Breath Drake does not circle; it holds. It climbs to the height, it folds, it breathes in once, and the breath is the whole of the weapon, and the dive is the spending of the breath, 38 m/s down the pit-wall, and the burning that comes with the dive is the last word of the quarrel. On the rock it moves low and loud, 6 m/s, because the One-Breath line has never needed quiet, and the loud is the point, and the loud is the quarrel.
Natural Weapons & Defenses
The weapon is the breath, and the breath is the promise: the One-Breath drake holds one breath, and the breath does not come back until the dive is spent. The dive is the spending — 38 m/s down the pit-wall, the body a line, the burn-rudder open, and the burning that comes with the dive is the argument ended. The second weapon is the beak and the claw, because the dive is not always the word, and the claw is the word the dive is too big for. The defense is the height, because the One-Breath drake is at home above the spear, and the pit-wall is the one road down, and the pit-wall is lined with the drake's own scale.
Magic Alignment
The One-Breath Drake stands in the service of Pyrra, the First Flame, the god of the first burning, and its magic is the holding of the breath — the power to make one breath into a whole argument and the argument into a whole dive. One-Breath is the primary gift: the breath held for the whole dive, the burning that comes with the spending, and the length of the crest that is the length of the breath, because the crest is the breath made visible, and a long crest is a long argument.
Society
A One-Breath Drake lives in a roost of two to a dozen in the high chambers of the pit wall, and the roost is run by the oldest and the meanest, because the roost is the only room in the world where the meanest is the law. The hierarchy is by the length of the held breath: the one who holds the longest eats the hoard's best, and the one whose crest is longest keeps the high ledge. The young of the roost share the ledge and share the quarrel, and the quarrel is the only school the roost has, and the school is the pit, and the pit does not grade, the pit only ends.
Culture & Lore
The One-Breath Drake keeps its lore in the quarrel, and the quarrel keeps it better than the stone does, because the quarrel is the only book in the world that gets longer when someone loses. The old say the first One-Breath drake was a quarrel that learned to breathe, and the pit gave it a body because the pit had no other way to keep the arguing. They call the strangers who mistake the drake for the dragon "the ones who were worth the dive," and they keep the best of the broken wing — the wings of the ones who were loud enough to be a quarrel — on the roost ledge, which is the finest teaching in the line.
Home
Its home is The Scale Pits, a pit of black scale and broken wing, where the small, sharp, and very loud quarrel is the only law. The One-Breath Drake is the pit's first word, and the pit is the drake's first quarrel, and the two of them keep each other the way a flame keeps an argument. The hoard is guarded, the ledges are kept loud by the roost, and the broken wing is left where it fell, which is the one law the pit does not break. When the quarrel is kept and the quarrel is honest, the One-Breath drake is at home in the way only the loud thing can be: as the shape the pit was made to argue.
Relations
The One-Breath Drake keeps a loud, quarrel-kept peace with the rest of the Drakes of The Scale Pits, a peace of finished arguments that has held as long as the pit has been arguing. To Pyrra, the First Flame, the One-Breath line is the first burning made flesh, and the line leaves a single burn-rudder scale at the high ledge for the god, which is the one offering the flame has ever asked for, and the flame asks for it every season, and the flame never takes it, and the asking is the keeping.
In the Story
In the story of the six who arrived, the One-Breath Drake is the first loud test the pit offers, the quarrel that asks which of them is worth the dive and which of them is worth the grudge. It is the figure that holds the breath while the oaths are made on the ground, and the figure whose held breath is the map the war is argued by, because the drake has heard every argument the warrens have made, and the drake has kept them, and the drake is the one quarrel in the world the war cannot finish.
