The Refusal
The kite shield is the ogre's whole doctrine in iron and oak: the refusal to let go. It is the shape of a kite — the point down, the curve up — and the curve is the whole point: the blow goes over the shield, not through it. The shield is not armor. The shield is the argument that the person behind it is the one who is not hit.
A journeyman kite shield is an honest piece of work — the iron band, the oak face, the grip that has been stood against. A master kite shield has the maker's mark on the boss, and the boss is the point that takes the blow so the hand does not. A masterwork kite shield is a story event — Rumzuck Umbatsch's is the one the story remembers, and the story remembers it because it is the one that has never been the one who is hit.
In the Hand
The shield is the third stance, made iron: brace. The fighter behind it takes half the blunt wound and cannot move — but the fighter behind the fighter behind it can parry for free, because the shield is the one who is hit. The shield is not a weapon. The shield is the reason the line holds, and the line holds because the shield is the refusal, and the refusal is the ogre's whole personality.
