The Hide
The hide shield is the traveler's work, and the traveler is the one who cannot carry the weight of iron and the weight of the road in the same hand. It is the shape of a round shield grown from a single Hide — the hide tanned, doubled where the face needs it, and bound with a rim of Iron or of braided hide where the maker could not find the iron. It is soft where it is needed. It is not armor in the way the iron is armor. It is armor in the way the ground is under you: you do not see it, and it is there.
A common hide shield is a day's work and a week of drying. A master hide shield has the face doubled over a core of Bone, and the core is what takes the edge. A masterwork hide shield is a story event, and the story has not written it yet — the traveler's work is not the kind of work people keep.
In the Hand
The hide shield is the second stance, made soft: brace, light. It gives under the blow, and the giving is the whole argument: the blow goes into the shield, not through it, and the hand takes the give instead of the cut. It is light enough for the long road, and it is forgiving in the way only soft things are forgiving.
"Iron argues. Hide forgives. On a long road, you want the one that forgives." — Smackage
