The Decision
The crossbow is the patient shot. It loads slower than the bow, it misses less, and the sound it makes is the sound of a decision — the bolt leaves when the trigger says it leaves, and the trigger says it leaves when the hand says it leaves, and the hand says it leaves when the moment says it leaves. The crossbow is the fight where the argument has already been made, and the bolt is just the sentence.
A journeyman crossbow is a guild piece, honest and heavy. A master crossbow has the maker's mark on the stock, and the mark is the promise that the bolt will land where the hand aimed it — which is the whole point, and the whole reason the crossbow is the weapon of the man who is paid to stand.
In the Hand
The crossbow is the ranged band's answer to the flail: the head goes where the aim says it goes, and the aim says it goes where the moment says it goes. It is slower than the bow, harder to miss, and the sound it makes is the sound of the fight being over before it has started.
"A crossbow is a decision you make with your finger — and the finger is the whole weapon." — guild master, The Company
