What This Page Is
The world's makers are not a profession — they are a lineage, and the lineage is the race, and the race is the one the story has to name. Who Makes What is the map of the maker's lines: who makes what, the guilds that price it, and the healer's table where the combat system meets the alchemist's shelf. The pipeline is in The Maker's Hand; this page is the hands themselves.
The Maker's Lines
Each line is a race's lore, surfaced — no new world is invented, only the one that is already on the race page, named:
| line | the race | what they make | the signature |
|---|---|---|---|
| The anvil-singers | Dwarf | masterwork metalwork; the only plate that moves | the name on the anvil |
| The ogre smiths | Ogres | heavy iron, shields, the work that needs a refusal to let go | the shield that is still standing |
| The dark-elf alchemists | Dark Elf | reagents, potions, the Exchange ladder in a bottle | the bottle that is the rite |
| The erudite runecasters | Erudite | the only line that writes spells into objects | the rune that holds the promise |
| The serpent-folk distillers | Serpent Folk | venom and poison work; the only line that measures a wound in doses | the vial that is the address |
| The Vantari bowyers | Vantari | light work, flight, and the only bows that shoot at a gallop | the bow that is the moment |
The lines do not mix easily — an anvil-singer does not distill, and a distiller does not sing iron — but they cross at the masterwork tier, and the crossing is the story: the blade that has a spell in it is the anvil-singer and the runecaster in one piece of iron, and the piece of iron is the one the story remembers.
Guilds and Fees
A guild is a price list with a reputation. The guilds are multi-race — the Company has a dwarf at the anvil, an ogre at the shield, and a dark elf at the shelf — and the guild's reputation is the one the buyer is paying for, because the guild is the one who answers when the item breaks, and the answering is the one the fee is for.
- The guild mark is the journeyman tier: the mark is the promise that the item was made right, and the right is the one the guild's name is worth.
- The guild fee is the price list: the material, the time, the name — the three legs of the price in The Maker's Hand, set in stone by the guild, and the stone is the one the buyer has to accept.
- The guild answer is the reputation: the guild answers for the item, and the answer is the one the buyer is buying, and the buying is the one the story has to be about.
Medicine: the Craft Branch
The healer's table is where the combat system meets the alchemist's shelf:
- The wounds are in Blood and Nerve — bleeding, broken, stunned, dying — and each wound has its cure: time, a healer, a spell, a choice.
- The shelf is in the alchemist's line — the antidote, the poultice, the draught — and each shelf item has its wound: the antidote is the venom's answer, the poultice is the bleeding's answer, the draught is the dying's answer.
- What a heal actually is: healing is the light school's signature — the answer, not the question — and it costs Exchange like everything else. A healer who has no light school is a healer with a shelf and no answer, and the answer is the one the wound is waiting for.
The healer is the maker's line that the story never lets rest: the wound is the one who is always waiting, and the shelf is the one who is always short, and the short is the one the story has to be about.
"The maker's hand is not the hand that makes. The maker's hand is the hand that owes — and the owing is the one the world has to remember." — guild master, The Company
