Spell

Cinder Fall

Fire · Circle 4 — A rain of cinders, set over an area and held.

What It Does

A rain of cinders, set over an area and held. It does not strike — it sets the terms, and the terms are the ground, and the ground is the one who is still standing. The fire school's answer to the poison door's arithmetic: the terms are already losing.

The Cost

Circle 4 · Fire · Exchange: reagent (ash, named) — casting time two rounds. The Exchange is the reagent (ash rung on the ladder in The Veil: the spell costs exactly as much as the spell is, and the meter pays the budget, not the cost.

The Failure

The ash is named wrong — the reagent is the forge's, not the one the spell wants — and the cinders fall, and the cinders fall on the one who is already ash.

In Stories

The master's fire spell; the one the camp casts when the area is the argument and the ground is the one who has to lose.

The door's scale anchor is Ignathar, who casts it the way a hand casts a shadow — which is how a reader knows the shape of the thing, because the dragon does not think about it.
