Overview
The Bone-Read Gnoll is the aggressive, certain eye of The Fangsteppe, a heavy-jawed, dry-brown hyena-packer of the bone-totem savanna who reads the bones and keeps the low totems, the steppe's aggressive, social, and most certain eye. It stands well over a meter and a half tall, watchful and heavy, with the kind of certainty that comes from a life measured in read bones rather than years. Where the Howl-Keeper gnolls keep the howl, the Bone-Read gnolls of the steppe read the bone, and they have been reading the first bone in the first totem for a very long time.
Habitat
The Bone-Read Gnoll keeps to the low totems of The Fangsteppe, a range of dry, bone-fed ground where the savanna is a promise and the totem is a treaty. Its dwellings are coaxed into the faces of the steppe-slopes, hollows of packed earth and laid bone that catch the warm steppe-light on their inner face and the shelter of the totem on their outer. It favors the lower totems where the bone runs closest to the ground and the reading is clearest, the places where a promise can be read without the steppe's own motion breaking it.
Appearance
A Bone-Read Gnoll stands about 1.70 m tall, heavy and watchful, with dry-brown, umber-spined fur that reads as bright in the warm steppe-light. Its left talon-tooth bears the bone-notch, a deliberate mark worn as a record of the long art of the reading, and its tail-tip is bone-white, the color of the steppe's own glow at dusk. Its eyes are pale yellow-green, bright and certain beneath the brow, and they glow faintly in the dark. It wears a patchwork of leather and hide in muted brown and dry umber and carries a single bone-stone at its belt, set with a single totem-loop at the brow, the loop of a reader.
Behaviour
The Bone-Read Gnoll is aggressive, social, and profoundly certain, a creature of long readings and long attention who rarely surprises and rarely is surprised. It listens before it reads, often for hours, listening to a totem or a person or a bargain until it understands the shape of the bone, and only then does it read, and then with an exactness that feels rehearsed over years. It is not unkind, but it is not easily moved, and a debt named by a Bone-Read gnoll is a debt the steppe will keep long after the reader has gone.

The Bone-Read gnoll is no lone fighter and carries no blade, for its power is the bone and the totem itself, not force. Its primary defense is the totem, for it knows every corner of the low totems and can lead a pursuer through The Fangsteppe for days until the pursuit loses its nerve and its balance. Should it be forced to act, a Bone-Read gnoll is heavy and precise, 7 m/s over the dry steppe and low, and it fights to unmake a threat rather than to wound it, cutting a bone, dimming a light, or reading a totem until the threat is spent.
Magic Alignment
The Bone-Read gnoll is attuned to the long word of the totem, for the totem is the reading and the reading is the whole of its power, and a gnoll that has a steppe and a bone and a totem does not need a spell that is not its own. It is not attuned to any art that is not the totem, and it is not bound by any word that is not its own, and the not being bound is the whole of its way of being free. Its one signature thing is the reading, which is not a magic but is a thing that the gnolls of the steppe have read for a very long time, and the reading is the bone, and the bone is the whole of its power.
Society
The Bone-Read Gnolls live in The Fangsteppe in packs of twenty to sixty, bound by the readings they keep together rather than by blood or by place, and they read for the Howl-Keeper. There is no elder and no ruler beyond the Howl-Keeper, for a gnoll that has read the most and kept the most is simply the one the others listen to, and the listening is a howl and the howl is the whole of their society. Decisions are made in the totem, by a company of yellow-green-eyed readers that has already decided and is only agreeing, and once made they are kept, for a gnoll that breaks a reading is a gnoll that has broken the whole of what it is.

The culture of the Bone-Read Gnoll is a culture of the read bone, a whole way of life organized around the idea that a word that is aggressive and social is the only honest word in the steppe. They keep no records, for a gnoll that has read a bone does not need a record, the reading is the record, and the reading is aggressive and social and does not fade. Their stories are slow and social, told in the totem at the dusk, and they are stories of bones read and totems kept and the aggressive, social difference between them, told in a voice that is barked and means every reading.
